http://www.mythtv.org/ has pretty much everything you need. It runs on linux so a basic understanding of that would be helpful, I’d suggest Ubuntu if you’re totally new to linux.
Since it’s linux based there are a ton of add-ins available for it and more and more keep coming. I’m actually going to be posting all my building notes (pretty much a walk through) of it to BFF once I’m done (check there in about a month or so).

Ive never heard of MythTV before reading your post. I would love to build one. Are there any guides you suggest reading to get started? Thanks!

I’ve spent (so far) about $350 on my MythTV box, I figure when I’m done with it I’ll be in it $600 – $700 but that will be for a 1gb DVR which will also be a blue ray player. I wouldn’t buy an apple branded DVR, it would cost way too much and not have all the options and upgrades available to a linux based full open source solution.

$400 for a 500GB with option to upgrade via external drive would work for me.

If you could send the files to your iTunes then sync those with your iPhone. Holy cow. That would be fantastic.

I freaking HATE my Comcast box. What a giant POS. How do you release a product like that to the masses? Horrible. Ive been looking at getting a Tivo brand DVR, but the thought that Apple may bring something will keep me waiting. Probably forever.

Please do it Apple.

I honestly think this is a waste of effort, I think the market really isn’t that deep with people who are going to get rid of their TiVo’s or comcast boxes for an Apple TV. The fanboys on this site may say they will. However my guess is most of them are 18 and in college and probably would if it weren’t for the fact that they don’t have any money.

If anything this should be Apple TV 2.0. That would be the only redeeming quality “if” and only if this were to actually come out and be the so called “brick” or whatever junk that they are tossing around Rumorland.
