Here are some initial shots of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic aka the Tube aka the first Symbian S60 touchscreen phone.
The Tube is here, folks, and now it’s called the 5800 XpressMusic… clever marketing on Nokia’s part because they don’t want to draw direct comparisons to the iPhone and the XpressMusic line is quite popular in the low end, at least in the U.S. It’s music-centric device, says Nokia, and has a 3.2-inch haptic touch-screen, 3.2-megapixel AF camera with dual-LED flash, VGA front camera, A-GPS, HDSPA, up to 16GB of storage via microSD and some loud speakers which were actually quite clear and crisp.
We saw the Tube last night and neither of us came away impressed. I thought the accelerometer was quite responsive, but we were sorely disappointed in the Web browser. The menu system was overcrowded and wasn’t simple like the iPhone’s. S60 devices are just a big mess of menus and sub-menus and this was no different.
We’ll have more on the phone shortly but until then click through for the spec sheet.
The 5800 will be available in Europe by year’s end for 279 Euro/129 UK Pounds/$227 USD and it comes with a fancy plectrum-style stylus and an 8GB microSD. There are no carriers announced and it may be available from Nokia stores and online next year. This is also Nokia’s first Comes With Music phone, a service that offers unlimited music downloads for the first year of ownership.

I own a 5700 XpressMusic, and this new one is 5800 :D It comes with no mobile connection, so $227 is rather half the price of iPhone. And with opera mini, even web browsing will rock :)

Until someone comes out with a phone with an App store and a way to upgrade your phone via the web whenever there are updates (rather than buying a new model every time), the iPhone still wins. I don’t think these other phone-makers really don’t understand why the iPhone is so popular.

I think Nokia could take a cue from Apple and slim down their high end media phones. I like the functionality but don’t want to carry a brick in my pocket.

Burrrrrned.
Still, it’s what’s inside the iPhone that makes it so great. the ability to make your own software for it.

You cretin Symbian is an OS with SDK so “you can make your own software for it”

What world do you live in? Apple’s market share is a couple of percent - Nokia’s is 40. Apple is making a blip on Nokia’s business because it is a high-end phone that has higher margins, but it’s still not going to over-worry them.

Thus, it’s more like Apple combating Nokia than Nokia combating Apple. Get your facts right, people. Stop comparing these two devices. They’re aimed for the completely opposite market. Outside of the US, the iPhone hardly makes a blip.
Whatever amount iPhones had been sold, Nokia sells the amount more than 50X over. Apple aims to sell 5 million iPhones this year. Nokia has already sold 133 million phones in the 2007 fiscal year.
Nokia really -doesn’t- give a damn. It came out with a touch screen phone way before Apple did, the 7710, but apparently people haven’t heard of ‘GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT’.

Yeah I think these can live together. However this is just a superior device when comparing to iPhone. Full platform with features and APIs available and now with touch! Woww.

It’s interesting for people with a Verizon, or here in Canada Virgin/Telus/Sasktel plans, since it supports CDMA, something the iPhone will never get..
CDMA is pretty much the only technology that actually works here on the prairies..

Some things that iphone does not have. Video out, removable battery, ability to develop apps on windows machine rather than buying mac, stereo bluetooth headset profile, external storage card.
iphone sucks in battery life.

I think Nokia knows its market. This is not an attempt to compete with the iphone but give teenagers an option. In an economic downturn in the US and EU which do you think parents will buy? They’ll buy the cheapest.
This isn’t an iphone killer because some people will always pay for style - and the iphone has much more style. It will appeal to people who care more about features and price. Another thing people in the US might not be aware of is that huge numbers of Europeans are familiar with the S60 platform. Even if it’s not as slick as the iphone, touch with haptic feedback and an operating system they already know, will be enough.

Why kill the iPhone? It has just 2 per cent market share and Nokia has 40. Let it live! :)

Just one question — does @jomm work for Nokia or what? That phone might be smaller than the iPhone length and height-wise, but it’s substantially thicker — so I guess that makes it a *small* brick.

Hmm. Funny thing about streaming video on a mobile. It sounds nice and it sure makes nice eye candy, but its one of those features rarely used once you get your cell phone. Ask around, you’ll see.

Seems like half of your geniuses did not notice its half the price of an iPhone (unsubsidized prices, you idiot who was about to say “but iPhone is only $199!”)). Second, stylus = hand-writing = Asian markets = another superior spec for that market compared to iPhone.
Nokia’s response to iPhone is only coming in February 2009. Sure, a bit late, but the point is that 5800 is targeted at a complete different segment of the market and, in addiotion, at providing a product certain regions/countries are likely to prefer (due to both price point and specs, such as the handwriting recognition that iPhone, AFAIK, is lacking). Not everything is about the US market (even I can admit that even though I live in the US - although I am not American).
