Absolutely stunning analysis over at BGR, where Mr. Genius has the first photos of the Amazon Kindle 2.

Our ninja sent us a ton of shots, and we have to admit, they look pretty good.

Pretty good, indeed.

The Kindle 2 retains the same basic form factor as the original Kindle, while adding a little width and length, as the well-lit comparison photo up there shows. Note that the screen size is essentially unchanged.

Rounding out: there’s still EVDO downloads; there’s no more SD card slot; and the new joystick mechanism didn’t exactly impress, at least not immediately.

  • I work in scientific publishing and rendering of equations in pdfs was not very good. Kinda slow as well. For all applications, it has a little bit of work still to do.

  • why bigger device for the same screen size?

  • @maruda: maybe they’re thinking that there needed to be more gripping area around the screen and the keyboard to make it more comfortable to hold for prolonged periods. Not that I necessarity agree with that decision, just trying to rationalize.

I think it’s pretty interesting that these leaked out the day after Sony announced their new eReader 700. Clearly somebody at Amazon has a competitive streak…

  • Looks like someone’s run over an ipod in their car.

  • I was really interested in all your other Kendle links. But every single one of them — including the one in Chinese! — fails to open a new page. If this is an indication of how reliable your site is, you can be sure that I will stay away from it. And I would also think that the Washington Post, which led me to your site, could be a little more selective about the links that they choose.

My big question has to do with how Amazon will handle its current Kindle holders. Since they have redesigned the device itself, more than an “upgrade” will be involved. For an operation that has a reputation of being quite sophisticated, they seem to be leaving a lot of loose ends. And since, according to reports, they have already sold out the current version, they should be more current and specific about the new one.

This much seems certain: if I want more information about Kindle, I’ll go to Amazon. I won’t rely on other sources that cannot provide reliable links.
