Oh right, you make so much sense, god, how did I not see it like that? "it’s always fun to have another toy to show off to your friends" I mean, anyone can afford to spend $1300 in a toy to show off, right, I mean, it's not like you could just buy a Blu-ray player for home and a decent laptop for productivity for about the same or less, of course, who in their right mind would do that?

dude are you retarded?

That's exactly right. You might barely make it through a normal DVD movie, I read somewhere the battery life is just under 2 hours. I bought mine to have a mobile desktop replacement while at a conference or so. I'm a physics student and I need a powerful computer (CPU, RAM, Graphics) but other than that I take the multimedia capabilities of a laptop as an extra and don't expect too much... because it isn't too much no matter what. I mean, computers with 5.1 audio, are you kidding me, the audio is still pretty much point source.

I love the comment left by "Rob Loach" above stating he doesn't see the point of having a Blu-Ray player in a laptop. To start things off, this machine is considered a multimedia "desktop replacement." That "class" of laptop inherently has many more features and more usability than that of mainstream machines. Not to mention, this laptop has room for many peripherals with several USB ports, a very useful e-SATA port, AND an HDMI port which gets me back to Rob's comment. This laptop has been designed around the requirements of an AV enthusiast, and an option the user now has is to use the HDMI port to watch Blu-Ray movies on an external high-definition display - say 60 plasma? While no one in their right mind would use this as a primary Blu-Ray Disc (BRD) player, it's always fun to have another toy to show off to your friends. Plus, you can NEVER have too much video resolution on a laptop, if people were to say that a car was fast enough or that an airplane flew well enough, we would not have any innovation. We'd still be driving Model T's and flying the Wright Brothers' plane. Eventually, we can expect to see OLED's on all our Laptops and in our homes. That's just how technology progresses. Open your eyes to the idea that nothing is ever fast enough, smooth enough, or has a display with enough pixels.

[...] CrunchGear got their meaty hands on the new HP HDX16 Blu-ray notebook we previewed back in September, and it’s pretty shiny. And I say “meaty” because they damn near broke some of those flashy, flush buttons during the initial feeling up. Keep those paws away from the 16:9 high def widescreen and I think we’ll be OK, fellas. [CrunchGear] [...]

I don't really understand the point of having a Blu-Ray player in a laptop. Would you really want to get together with your friends around your laptop and watch a movie? You don't need that much resolution video on a laptop. Maybe if you wanted a portable blu-ray player to plug into a projection screen when you were away from home. The blu-ray plus graphics card would just suck the battery life though. I bet you wouldn't even be able to get through a whole Blu-ray movie without the battery dying.....

Yeah, the mute incident makes it pretty clear that HP is still making crappy hardware.

Marketing over quality

Well, I guess it means the bright buttons are software-controlled? Press "Mute", it tells the OS you pressed a button, Vista chugs along looking at the DRM DLL's to find out whether or not you're allowed to mute (or perhaps unmute: no DRM, no sound for you!), and then it tells the hardware to turn the light on/off.

Hopefully not, but the slow response makes it seem that that's the case.

Well, I guess it means the bright buttons are software-controlled? Press “Mute”, it tells the OS you pressed a button, Vista chugs along looking at the DRM DLL’s to find out whether or not you’re allowed to mute (or perhaps unmute: no DRM, no sound for you!), and then it tells the hardware to turn the light on/off.

Hopefully not, but the slow response makes it seem that that’s the case.

the reason why they would put something as ugly as that wifi antenna in the box is that the internal wifi didn't pass HP's internal qualification tests for wifi reception. they realized "oh crap, we still have to ship this thing" and threw the antenna in so the machine would pass.

I think we need more of this style of review. How about a laptop shoot-out with focus on the reflectivity of the screen and how easy the mute button is to press?

Can I mute you?

Also, nice job making the computer try to sleep by closing the lid too much when you were supposed to be doing a hands-on. Could you not have done another take? It's not like this was really funny or anything.
