Use the "A" (apperture priority) setting and manually set the f-stop to it's smallest value (I think it's 2.8). This will create a "shallow" depth of field and blur the background.

to buy for this camera?

The camera allows you to take 3 photos in the auto mode before it completely locks you out for 30 seconds for "processing". For that 30 seconds, you can do nothing with the camera. While Kodak apparently issued a firmware upgrade for the Z1912IS, the are refusing to fix this camera's obvious problem.

I think I will have my dad check this one out. I'm a Canon snob myself, but I must admit this seems to do everything he wants it to do (be able to take long zoom photos of birds, good pictures indoor and out of grandchildren, high megapixel).

[...] Crunch Gear had the following to say: This camera is really, really light. It’s surprisingly light. You could easily forget that this thing was in your pocket. It’s got a fast start up time, which means you’re less likely to miss those impromptu shots. The auto focus is fairly fast, and certainly adequate for most casual users.
