SteelSeries drops WoW-oriented 15-button mouse, yes 15 buttons

by Devin Coldewey on October 10, 2008

When I was talking to SteelSeries about this beast, they insisted that this wasn’t part of an “arms race.” No, because in a battle of ergonomics, doubling the buttons isn’t always a good idea. But they assured me that they have been working really carefully on this thing to make it usable in the first place, and actually useful in the second. I’m thinking that the diamond-shaped button goes four ways and there’s another on the far side, which, added to all the other buttons there, makes 15.

They worked with Blizzard and designed the mouse around the idea that it’s practically a replacement for your keyboard; all your spells and shortcuts are there for most things, and you can switch profiles or customize super easily so you’re not always in battle mode or all-purpose mode. It’s also kind of cool-looking, which I didn’t expect, and it can be illuminated in pretty much any color you can think of. I don’t play WoW but I’ve seen enough of it to know that this thing might actually be useful. I have a feeling Nicholas will be checking this one out.

  • When will this mouse be released and is it MAC compatible?

  • Thank god. MY MX1000 won’t last forever, so it’s nice to see another option on the horizon.

  • Re: Mac compatibility. I finally just went with Boot Camp, and run WoW in Windows, because the Logitech mouse drivers were so much better.

However, since this mouse is WoW branded, and Blizzard is always so good about being both Mac and Windows compatible, perhaps SteelSeries will be compelled to do the same.

    • Try USB overdrive for Mac OS if you don’t like the device drivers your input device comes with.

      • Yeah…USB Overdrive, which I’ve used a ton in the past, didn’t quite cut it for me when I tried it recently. I was able to address all of the buttons, but it seemed flakey and laggy at best. It’s good to hear this mouse will have native Mac support…I may have to look into switching back to running WoW under MacOS.

          try 99.99 at gamestop
since i work their -15% off on it
oh and for bragging rights it is getting released 11/3/08

  • Lawl everyone knows its out on the 3rd just not playable till the 13th :D

  • I would like to know the size of the mouse, this is key. If you have a mouser with a claw footprint on the mouse and you give them a palm type mouse it won’t work. I’ve tried a lot of mice and the Logitech G9 is perfect size for my hand. Worst mouse I’ve ever done is the Boomslang by Razer, too long.

I’d like to know the dimensions before taking a chance.

  • I pre-ordered mine in oct spent the $100 and it still isnt here and its the 1st of jan wth is going on with that thing i want it real bad. It’s a fatty upgrade from the old ball mouse c’mon give us the final release date so we know when to exspect it PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Friend of mine had this mouse purchased for him in the middle of December for Christmas got the mouse yesterday(01/12/2008)…….. he didn’t mind so much because it looked like a sweet mouse. He pulled it out and showed it to me yesterday and indeed it looked so sweet I almost purchased another one right at that moment. Good thing I didn’t because this morning he told me it died after about 10 minutes of use.

  • Clickers are awful and are always noobs. Make a keyboard to replace the mouse kthxbai.

  • My nephew got one of these for his birthday. Unfortunately, he plays on a Mac, and now here in April, there are still no Mac drivers. Most of the buttons are unrecognized and unusable by WoW. My hands aren’t all that big and the action in the side buttons doesn’t feel very good to me, so I can’t see myself ever getting very comfortable with this thing.

    • For the chap with the Mac there is a program that allows you to map buttons using 3rd party software. It’s called X-control (or something like that). I used it with my MERC Keyboard I own. :)

  • I just received my SS Wo.W mouse and i am having some issues with it.

I had one on order for 6 months up here in Canada, but found it on a shelf in the states over the weekend.

I’d read the poor reviews, but wanted to satisfy my curiosity after all this time, so I disposed of some disposable income and picked one up.

For starters my buttons feel like they’re made out of cheap ass plastic, as in really cheap ass for the $ i paid..WTF?!?

It gives me the tingles in my fingers and i thought i had a major issue with RSI after playing for 5 hours straight but no, apparantly it’s some issue where there’s electricity being leaked out onto the chasis. I want to return mine but their tech support hasn’t gotten back to me. So much for money well spent.

I think im going to hit up a G5 or the mamba, which is kinda too expensive. there’s even a bunch of guys suing blizzard for it at http://petitiononline.com/wowmouse

seems like there’s so much complaints about the mouse in every forum i searched for. wtf

  • I got mine and I have problems with it as well. My problem is that when I try to use it in other games, it doesn’t work correctly. After talking to their tech support, it seems they specifically made this for WOW and Microsoft ONLY. In my other game (Battlefield 2) it only records single strokes, and does not have the “press and hold” functionality which allows for repeating letters, which is unlike what a keyboard does. So problem number 1 is bad driver programming. Also it has been randomly crashing (hard booting esque) my computer upon clicking a button. That is problem number 2, faulty hardware. Here is the record of conversation with their tech support.

I am having trouble with my WOW gaming mouse. I have attached the custom profile for the first issue, and some hardware info for the second issue.

The first issue has to do with (what i believe to be the sticky keys issue) press & hold on a button. On a keyboard for instance when I press an “A” key and hold it, it automatically repeats the letter. When I tried to use a custom macro linked to a keyboard key and tried to push and hold, the button would not repeat. (example from keyboard press and hold “AAAAAAAA”. example from mouse press and hold “A”.) Note: i am not referring to the “loop” feature.

The second issue I am having is related to system failure. I am not sure whether it is the mouse hardware, or the driver, but I have been getting a random system crash since the installation of the mouse. I don’t even get a blue screen. Usually upon clicking the computer will shut off without warning. After turning the computer back on I get a windows error message saying that there was an incompatible hardware or driver error.

The third issue I’m having is related to the start key and send key in the macro. any time I change the keys for these areas, I get strange characters showing when I return to edit them again. Almost as if they’ve been encoded incorrectly.

If this is a simple fix by sending in my mouse for replacement/repair please let me know ASAP. I’m not sure how long I will have warranty as I have bought this mouse over 3 weeks ago.

Thank you for your interest in SteelSeries Professional Gaming Gear.

      Regarding the 1st issue:
The hold function will only work in the WoW game but it won’t work outside of the game (i.e Notepad). So for example if you have button 4 assigned to “w”, in the WoW game, your character will move forward if you hold down button 4.

      Regarding 2nd issue:
Your system crashing may not be related to the WoW mouse. You can try testing the WoW mouse on a different computer just to be sure this is a hardware related issue.

      Regarding 3rd issue:
If you don’t want your custom macro to have the Enter before and after the macro, you can click on the X beside the Start Key and Send Key. Or you can select Text(Auto Delay).

Let me know if you have any further questions.

      Thanks,
      AK

    Additional Question 1:
Is there a way to change the speed in the auto delay to 1ms?

    Additional Question 2:
Will there be any steps taken to have the mouse use the hold function outside of WoW?

    Additional Question 3:
Does the hold function also act the same for the default windows mouse functions such as “windows button 4″ and “windows button 5″? When I set mouse buttons to use these functions, they don’t even respond correctly in an application.

    Hello,

    1. No, you can only change the auto delay by intervals of 20ms.

    2. Unfortunately this feature was only designed for the WoW engine and this can not be modified or it won’t work in the WoW game. Currently there is no plans to have this feature outside of the game however our R&D team will definitely review it.

    3. Button 4&5 should work as they are the real mouse buttons and can be held anywhere.

Try setting the WoW mouse software back to the default settings. Now test button 4&5 in Internet Explorer, it should function as Internet Brower Forward & Backward. Does it work for you?

If no, maybe your button 4&5 are defective.

    Please advise.

    Thanks,
    AK

    Response to question 2:
I know that the saitek pro gamer command unit (& cyborg gaming pad) offers keyboard and mouse button “key cloning”, customizable auto delay up to 10ms, press and hold for ALL keys, as well as custom profiles. Perhaps that would be a good place for R&D to check up on. It would be fantastic to have a mouse just as powerful.

    Response to question 3:
The windows 4 & 5 buttons do work with IE, however it does not for other programs. The game I am playing is Battlefield 2. In order to customize an action with a key, you have to click in the custom key box, then you’re prompted to hit the key you want to use. With my old mouse, BF2 will recognize the windows 4 & 5 buttons, however the WoW mouse doesn’t register. I think the problems are related to the WoW mouse no using an actual key stroke, but a code string.

Wish I could program, I’d love to try and come up with a solution. Thank you for your assistance.

    Hello,

    Sorry for the delay.

    1. We appreciate your feedback. I will forward your suggestion to our R&D team.

    2. The WoW mouse will not work properly in Battlefield 2 game. The extended buttons are recognized in a strange way when playing these games, however it is still possible to bind functions to the buttons by binding these buttons inside the game remapping menu.

    Thanks,

Sorry to respond, again about the system failure problems are reoccuring even after reinstalling the software. This does seem that the WoW mouse is responsible. The error happens when left clicking in the firefox browser. Please see the error report provided by windows. Is there a customer support number I can call without getting charged? I paid about a $100 for a mouse that I can’t hardly use.

  • I just had to redo my computer due to a hard rive raid failure. i was using microsft sidewinder and after the WOW patch the extta buttons on the sidewinder were not working.

So i bought the Warcraft mouse loving the idea of 15 buttons.

I have a custom interface. Buttons 1-7 work fine.

Doing a single keystroke macro on buttons 9 or 8 will not work…with the keystroke I have bound to the icon for the function, nor will it except a direct binding when i clik the mouse button as it does with buttons 1-7

    is this fixable? Please help.

    thanks
