The Egyptian government GPS ban is locking down the country’s borders from the latest technology. This ban prohibits consumers from owning and operating GPS-capable devices without a government-issued permit which includes cars, mobile phones, notebooks, and anything else that might have GPS. The government cites security concerns and joins Syria along with North Korea as the only counties restricting the use of GPS. This ban makes consumers resort to back alleys to get their iPhone 3G fix. No fun.

this gov just wants to raise taxes on new technology. I’m sure the ministers and all VIP do no need any authorization to use and bring those devices in egypt. by the way, they also should ban google earth if the internet ever exists in this country
Is there any explanation as to why they’re doing this? And, how does this ban apply to the great many European tourists who will rock-up on the shores of Egypt with their GPS-equipped cell phones..? Will we be required to declare our phones on the way in..?
Andrew - a lot of people buy GPS-enabled phones abroad and bring them to Egypt and the airport officials are none the wiser. The ban is only effective in so far as prohibiting the sale of these phones in the country, and of course if anything happened to the phone I think you’d have a hard time finding a dealer who would/could fix it.
And I think that the reason it’s banned is because the govt seems to be under the impression that it can be used for spying or probably something equally ridiculous as that…
