The ban is only effective in so far as prohibiting the sale of these phones in the country, and of course if anything happened to the phone I think you'd have a hard time finding a dealer who would/could fix it. And I think that the reason it's banned is because the govt seems to be under the impression that it can be used for spying or probably something equally ridiculous as that...
