Oh. My. Gawd. I love this Dyson vacuum. It works so damn well and looks great doing it. Some people aren’t going to like this analogy, but it reminds me of the first time I used my PowerMac G4: it simply works and feels like it’s going to last forever. I’m not the one that vacuums in my house so with the hope of not sounding misogynistic, I handed the Dyson over to my wife and later, mother-in-law, for a more in-depth analysis.
My house has never been this clean. When we first received the Dyson, my son helped me put it together and my wife took it on it’s first test drive; and boy, did she put some miles on it. She quickly discovered that every piece of hard plastic was placed on this Dyson for a reason. The rear wheels are placed farther out for not only non-vacuuming movement, but also stability when the attachment hose is in use. The rollers stop when the vacuum is placed upright. The ball rolls, well, like a ball and the filter is washable. Once again, it simply works well, and does so like no other vacuum we have ever used.
So then my mother-in-law borrowed the Dyson and pitted it against her heralded Kerby. She found the ball design awkward at first but also enjoyable once she discovered how it rolls. The Dyson passed the classic door-to-door salesman test of picking up what her Kerby left behind. Basically, she only had one gripe about the Dyson DC25: the hose. It was kind of hard for her to use.
My wife and I found the attachment hose easy, but my mother-in-law couldn’t use it at all due to her bad shoulder. The hose is long, but also features a very strong outer coil that is kind of tough to pull. I understand why it’s so tight as you don’t want your expensive Dyson’s attachment hose to be all loosey-goosy on ya, but my mother-in-law could not use it and is a deal breaker for her.
Speaking of the hose, the two little attachment tools show how well this vacuum is designed. They snap into their own little compartments with – I can’t believe I’m going to say this – style and grace. Seriously! Take your standard Hoover vacuum. At least on the ones I have used, these little tools seems haphazardly designed and placed on the rear panel, but on the Dyson, it’s like the whole vacuum was designed around these parts. In fact, that’s how the entire DC25 feels.
I can’t vouch for suction longevity but this vacuum knows how to get the job done. I have a little fetish about a clean, well-vacuumed floor, and this Dyson does it for me. This model is designed for all flooring types and a button switches off the front brush so it worked great on my living room’s hardwood floor.
The only other criticism the three of us could come up with is that the ball is located so close to the front brush holder that you cannot vacuum underneath tables and chairs as easily as other vacuums. With that being said, I love this thing.
Yeah, the Dyson DC25 retails for $499, but until you give it the ‘ol college try, don’t knock the price. It rocks and to my utter surprise, well worth the price.

Does that mean that when the cup is full of dirt or when the belt breaks it will give you a frowny face and tell you to bring it to an Appl… err, a vacuum repair shop?
I have a d24, the smaller of the ball dyson’s, and I love love love it. I think I vacuum like three times as often as I used to.
It’s reviews like this why I miss being a tech blogger. I’ve always wanted to try one of these as it might actually make me vacuum from time to time.
We LOVE our DC17 Animal Dyson. It totally turned our rugs into brand new rugs — seriously. Expensive, yes, but well worth it…just like my MBP. Matt you’re spot on with the analogy.
OMG, I LOVE vacuums!
Question: When you put your hand underneath the vac head with the power on, do you feel the suction there, or only a lot of wind blowing? I just got mine and while it does pick up dust etc, when I put my hand underneath while the power is on, I don’t feel a great deal of suction at all. Is this normal?
I’ve seen this Dyson before, and I liked it.Just one thing, I’ve never used one! Great looking machine.we own a dc14 vroom now, which we’ve
had for 3 years.Your dyson looks cool.Sounds cool and powerful.
dyson wont honor their warranties. they have a f in the better business bureau. the vacuum was a few months old when i took it in. had a defect since i got it. they refused to honor the warranty.
whats the use of a five year warranty if you have to take the company to court to get them to honor it?
their customer service staff is horrible. stay away from this company.
if you dont want to trust me despite my years of experience with appliances, trust consumer reports and the better business bureau and stay away from the crooks at dyson.
product looks great and dyson has a good presence in the google results. their vacuum is not worth more than $100. After a few months, you have to sue them to get them to honor the warranty or buy a different product.
By far, the worst company I have ever dealt with.
this is by far the worst product ever!!!! i have a dc04 a dc07 and this contraption i picked it up at the time for £290 and it did well at first but after a year the suction started to slip we had to call dyson out to fix it they would’nt i kept being put through to different managers so far i have had to call them out 8times and loads of time wasting so i did a side by side comparison with my dc07 and dc25 the dc07 picked up much more after i went over it and i was astonished i got the dyson dc25 tested for its airwatts scince its supposed to give 220 mine tested just over 95 my dc04 kept its suction with 170 airwatts and my dc07 was just topping 290 i was apsoloutly amazed my dc07 is 5 years old and not 1 problem with it my dc25 is 14mnth old and had 8 problems with it worst product ever if you want a hoover go down to tesco and get there own brand at least they have more suction that this !!!!!
I purchased this vacuum cleaner one week ago. It was easy to put together and I liked the fact that it was easy to manuever around table legs, rugs, etc. Also it was easy to carry up stairs and the telescoping wand made it easy for me to reach something that needed some dusting. However, the second time I used the vacuum, while I was vacuuming, the brake pedal (stabilizer bar) and stabilizer wheels that hold the vacuum cleaner up came off the tract which made my vacuum cleaner lean way back and it would not stand up any longer. As much as I pulled and pulled on that red brake pedal and those stabilizer wheels they would not budge. Their customer service line is not open after 8pm and this occurred about 9pm so I was upset about it all night. The next morning I called Dyson and after being on hold 10 minutes, a customer service rep. told me what the problem was and that the red brake pedal and stabilizer wheels had come off their track and would need to be reset. Thankfully my husband was home that day as it took a strong person to pull this pin looking thing out on both sides of the vacuum and pop them back into a certain slot (the metal pins are on each side and fit into a track or slot). I did not expect that to happen after only the second use within one week’s time. Otherwise, it still vacuumed well.
