Oh noes! No more Mac Mini?
by John Biggs on October 21, 2008

Pic from . It’s a colocation service running Minis in a rack.
Rumor has it that the
Mac Mini will not be shipped to retailers as of today with no word as to when the diminutive little box will ever ship again. The Mini, as you recall, was supposed to be the cheapest Mac ever and at about $599 on the low end it actually was. Unfortunately, the Mini sold very poorly and there is talk it’s either getting a refresh or canceled entirely.

The Mini was actually my first Mac, purchased in 2005. Before that I was content pounding away on XP. It was a great gateway drug for the average user to become acquainted with the majesty of OS X. Now my dad uses it and he hasn’t destroyed it yet.

  • Crap! I was going to get one for iPhone development.

  • Oh no! I love mac minis. Now I have to make another T-shirt, first it was save LIFO, and now it will be save Mac Minis, who knows what disgusting depravity will come next.

  • I was going to buy the mini for home entertainment and security center, but was holding back and hoping a graphics upgrade. Now they better do come up with a new model otherwise its off to ebay for me.

  • My mac mini went in the bin last month due to a hardware problem (graphics chip i think causing crashes left right and center).

I was thinking of getting a new one to sit under my TV instead of the apple TV (which doesn’t do much for the money).

I wander if they will replace it with some new apple tv dvr thingy?

Though saying that my ideal solution would be to have something like a time capsule storing my itunes library which can be accessed by my macbook and something under my tv. I dont’ like the idea of having multiple itunes libraries.

  • Of couse the mac mini is sold poorly! The current hardware ist from Q4 2006! In 2007 there war a minor upgrade, but it is in fact 2 year old hardware!

Who is stupid enough to pay 700 USD for 2 year old hardware? Nobody.

I wait since end of April for a new mini, but this is sad.

    Cheers from Germany
