I quit using Ebay a long time ago because the good deals just aren't there any more. There used to be a lot of people selling their old stuff just to get rid of it, and they weren't looking to make a living off it. Now it's all businesses relisting items countless times until a sucker finally comes along. And the whole retaliatory feedback thing was ridiculous. I also don't like waiting for auctions to end, especially since nobody ever bids until the last few minutes.

I buy everything from the sellers on Amazon now. MUCH better deals, inflated shipping charges are extremely rare, no waiting for auctions to end, and if you have a problem, Amazon takes care of it immediately.

No they can't. Not really anyway.

FIRST you can REPLY to feedback. (ebay needs to increase the length of feedback too)

Second most buyers do not really CARE about feedback especially when you have 3,000 or 10,000 feedbacks.

Third there DESIRE to have the goodie OVERRIDE minor feedback inconvenience.

THIRD its EASY for sellers to simply create a new account if they have to. this is why being scammed by a seller is so rampant. its painfull easy for a seller to RESET.

to a buyer there is almost no difference between a 10 feedback seller and a 10,000 feedback seller. IF YOU HAVE WHAT THEY WANT THEY WILL BID. its the nature of human beings.

its not so easy for buyers to make a new account. its a sellers market on ebay a buyer sometimes has to EARN the right to BUY by getting positive feedback so "starting over" is a problem for buyers. They are also not in it for gain most of the time so its a lot of WORK for them as well.

only a tiny amount of work for the scammer.

and again if the feedback is a real problem ebay should have some for of arbitration.

make it a FEE based arbitration but if the seller is vindicated REFUND the fee.

so again it comes down to ebay policy.

I am very lucky because I have the best customers.
But I still think the feedback system is unfair. I do want to know the truth about a buyer or seller.
Also a buyer can always use feedback to blackmail a seller and I'm certian it happens all the time. Although Ebay and Pal Pay do provide a great service and have been helpfull many times, the truth is my profit margin is so small often Ebay gets it all, and I often lose money on sales.
I would like Ebay to lower the fees, stop hassasing sellers about free shipping.( I already lose enough money) and change the feedback system or just get rid of it.
I can't afford to do Ebay much longer.
I think Ebay will soon be a place for people to sell stolen merchandise and stuff laying around the house, and nothing more. These things what you pay for the product your selling doesn't matter.

OH and BTW. I have a RIGHT to be an AHOLE. its called the 1st amendment. Get over it.

The only thing you should concern yourself with is getting paid. as long as I PAY YOU that is all my duty entails. I owe you NOTHING else.

when I goto a store and buy something. I give them my money and that is IT. I owe them NOTHING ELSE.

When they had feedback both ways 90% of my sellers NEVER got feedback from me for the simple reason that I REFUSE to leave feedback to a seller until they FIRST leave me feedback. Non negotiable.

You are right and you are wrong J Trip.

There should NEVER HAVE EVER BEEN feedback for buyers. Ebay should be nearly ZERO RISK for sellers (who use their brains)

The problem is not feedback. The problem is EBAY POLICY.

What right do you have to leave me feedback as a BUYER? feedback for sellers is almost inconsequential to the buyer. bad feedback for buyers is CRIPPLING.

Buyers can be for all intents and purposes banned from ebay because of some nasty untrue feedback. Sellers will CANCEL your bid if you had negs. ITs also a lot harder for buyers to GET feedback than for sellers.

The problem becomes that sellers KNOW feedback hurts buyers more than it hurts sellers so they use feedback as a weapon.

How often do you see I will leave positive feedback for you after you leave positive feedback for me.

Note how they added the vieled threat "positive" in their.

The implications are clear. I am going to use your feedback as a WEAPON to prevent you from leaving me negative feedback.

since it does far more damage to me than you the buyer elects to not leave feedback at all. or worse they get freaked and capitulate and leave positive feedback after getting screwed.

in the "real world" when do you EVER get to leave "feedback" for the customers? NEVER. its absurd.

what happens when a customer picks something up (bids) and then decides not to buy it?

Easy you put the damned thing back up on the shelf. Woopee.

now this is not quite the same on ebay but you get the idea.

here is where the ebay policy becomes a problem. they charged you whether the buyer follows through or not.

now the solution is easy. no sale NO FEES

did ebay do this? NO they created "strikes" and other such "crap" so they could still CHARGE YOU for the auction.

ebay is greedy.

now there is a counter problem to this. Sellers can scam the system. no bids sell outside ebay get profit avoid fees.

Well again this is an EBAY problem. Again they got greedy and charged too much damned money. So sellers gamed it to REDUCE the fee load.

thats why you see $5 item with $45 shipping.

solution? stop screwing the sellers and charge FAIR fees. I stopped selling large things on ebay because the fee's were killing me. I sold a few cars for example.

do you know what happens if you sell it? $80 in fee's holy shit! the car only sold for $700 over 11% of the sale price!

Know what happens if you DONT sell it? you STILL get socked for $40

Consider if it takes me 3 or 4 times to sell the car.

thats $200 to ebay. Not worth it anymore.

you just earned NOTHING but you now owe ebay $40. needless to say I stopped selling my old cars on ebay. Craigslist is a hassle but its FREE.

The core problem here is ebay charges too much. this entices sellers to CHEAT.

the solution is STOP CHARGING SO MUCH but ebay's solution is draconian rules.

ie its going to be there undoing. sure they will last for a while longer they have a ton of inertia. but its going to come to a head its its going to be the death of ebay.

Lets not even get into the SCAM that is paypal. I use it because I have to but I use it carefully.

if you must give paypal a bank account never have more than a couple dollars in there. and make sure you have CASH IN HAND before you ship anything. that means you take your PAYPAL debit card go withdrawal the money and THEN you ship it and not a second sooner.

the problem is definately NOT the buyers.

the buyers just do what buyers do. the solution to that is easy. Stop charging the sellers for buyer screw ups.

for time sensitive stuff learn to use the courts if a seller burns you just like in the real world.

I was both a buyer and a seller on ebay. There is no way I can sell anymore with their new policies on feedback. People who have only been buyers try to say it is unfair to buyers, which I never understood even as a buyer myself, but for sellers it is a sad state.
Buyers dont pay fees for ebay, they dont really pay anything except for the cost of shipping, which I remember those buyers who were uneducated on the matter would complain that the shipping fees were too high when I had the USPS calculator right there on the listing where they themselves could calculate the prices for shipping themselves. If they werent smart enough to know how to click a button then for their own sake they shouldnt be buying anything on the internet, period. If the price of shipping si too high, maybe they should take it up with the United States Postal Service or UPS.
It is so unfair that sellers can't leave negative feedback to crappy buyers. Some people think all a buyer has to do to get positive feedback is pay - WRONG! You also have to NOT BE AN A$$HOLE, I mean in reality if you go into a business and cause a scene most likely they will throw you out or at least warn others about you. Sellers cant even do that now.
I finally decided to quit ebay altogether when a buyer left me negative feedback stating they had paid for priority shipping instead of parcel post, which they didnt, but there was nothing I could do about it. I got a negative feedback, and getting a negative feedback on EBAY is not the same for sellers as it is for real business owners, because when you walk into a business they dont have a list of all the complaints they have received. If they did less people would shop there, and its the same on Ebay, if you have any negative feedback people will not buy from you. They do not understand the situation that took place with the buyer, they only see what the stupid buyer left.
All Ebay ever needed to do was get human beings to help buyers and sellers resolve their differences. From my standpoint, I would say the attitude of the buyers has sucked. I mean, if I couldnt afford something or the shipping for it I just wouldnt bid on it, very simple.

This Donahoe guy is only bad news for Ebay, how long will it take them to figure this one out?
Probably when its too late, I suspect.

I'm getting fed with all these complaints from Americans about ebay. I'm from the UK, and i know as we all do that ebay is garbage. Used to be good, but now under the control of that twit republican John Donahoe, its become a mess.
This being the case, why the hell don't all you whingeing yanks get off your behinds and come over to ebid.net and make it a truly global flea market which is what ebay was when it first started.
Remember, most thing American are usually the biggest, but not always the best. Think BMW or Ferrari.
Ebid.net is British, and is WAY superior to Ebay.

Come on over to my place. Yeehhe we're havin a party. We'll be singing, dancing and swaying, just come over to my place.

They don't care, Suzy, you're right. I'm an Ebay powerseller for 4 years, and closed my store today because the new policies are simply killing the customer base. To prove it, I ran 25 solid sterling silver items at 99 cents starting price and free shipping...only sold half, and the most viewed item had 17 hits. If i can't GIVE AWAY sterling silver (literally, as it costs $2.50 to ship anything), the customers simply aren't there.

Regardless, though, I spoke with the supervisor named "Owen" today in the customer service department. As I was asking when the policies would stabilize, he actually told me, and I am not kidding or misrepresenting anything on this: "When Ebay installed these policies, we knew some sellers would not make it under the new system, even the good sellers. It is an acceptable write-off."

Considering I am/was in the top 1% of Ebay powersellers (as assured several times by Ebay itself), that told me all I needed to know right there. So I'm an acceptable loss, makes me worry about who's staying behind.

I'm a long time seller on EBAY - good feedback and all the rest, but I've not done any sales for quite awhile now - too much hassle and every transaction is a "risk the business" one with the way feedback works now and the way ebay will suspend even if the buyer is way off base. I can't see how anyone could sell anything valuable on ebay now as the buyer just has to say not received and he gets his money back from paypal - seller is out item and money from what I'm hearing about PAYPAL. When checks or money orders were used - much much better and safer -

I am sick of MORONS crying over shipping charges.

THERE IS NO FRELLING SHIPPING CHARGES. there is only ONE CHARGE. the AMOUNT YOU HAVE TO PAY. THATS IT. Nothing else matters.

IS THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE TO PAY more or LESS than what its worth or what your willing to pay or what you can pay for it soemwhere else for?

I am sick of GREEDY whiners going hey its $1 but $50 shipping for a $120 FRELLING ITEM !!!!!

LETS look at the ROOT CAUSE.

Ebay SCREWING SELLERS. if ebay was not so damned greedy with there fees NONE of this would be a problem.

YOU KNOW its really easy to solve the non paying bidder problem. DON"T FRELLING CHARGE THE SELLERS FEES FOR THOSE!

WOW that was so hard. but no ebay greed.

If its NOT time sensitive SO WHAT. forget it. Should be NO DIFFERENT then me getting to the register and going ehh never mind don't want it.

FOR TIME sensitive stuff (holidays tickets etc..) where doing this RUINS the value GO AFTER the people!!! Ebay should fascilitate this. Saying it will chase away buyers is like complaining about STORE SECURITY because it will chase away buyers.

#1 EDUCATE your buyers and sellers and #2 any that still run away are too dumb to be on your site OR AT THE VERY ONES YOU WANT to chase away !!

but EBAY gets paid whether you get scammed or not HENCE why they don't really work hard to fix this.

you should NEVER be able to leave feedback for the buyer. WHAT ALIEN PLANET ARE YOU FROM!!

Show me ONE normal real world store where you "RATE" the shoppers or leave them feedback? Are you kidding me?

If a buyer becomes a problem you freaking BOOT THEM.

but no ebay wants there fees.

I had ebay take down an auction because I was charging too much for shipping. $9.50 - MY ACTUAL cost to ship that item NOT counting my time thats properly built into the cost of the item.

Thats priority mail shipping Packaging (bubble wrap VERY expensive but it works well) and my gasoline round trip to the PO. (at the then $4+ a gallon it added almost $3 to the cost of shipping a package (I sell VERY little so when I goto the PO its JUST to ship that nothing else I never have to go that direction for anything else)

I refused to lower my shipping. I even provided reciepts for my materials costs. $5 to $6 to the PO $1.50 in bubblewrap and $3 in gasoline. If there not LOCAL I actually EAT a dollar of the shipping !!

I told them my prices were NOT negotiable I would not change them and I refused to pay the fees (they refunded them eventually) eventually they simply stopped replying. I stopped selling on ebay. There loss not mine. I have been on ebay since early 1998.

EBAY needs to fix THERE END of this crap.

AT LEAST they finally fixed feedback. No more one shot phasers for sellers to BEAT buyers over the head with.

When a seller gets negged its irrelevant most of the time. YOU WANT what they offer you will overlook it and they can just sign up for a new account.

A negative to a BUYER could be FATAL could even PREVENT THEM from buying on ebay and having to start at ZERO with a new account is ALMOST as bad!!

its very biased. The seller could PREVENT the buyer from leaving negative feedback simply by NOT leaving feedback for the buyer. the veiled threat of set. GO ahead and neg me and I will neg you back and its gonna hurt you more than its gonna hurt me.

Result? DESERVED negs do not get left for bad sellers and NO ONE KNOWS there bad sellers as a result.

Sellers say but what is a noob of quick trigger pulls the neg bomb on me? THATS WHAT REPLYING TO FEEDBACK IS FOR YOU MORON.

THATS LIFE. Thats Business! Have you SEEN the "negative" sites that exist for almost ALL retail stores? pay pal sucks best buy sucks circuit city sucks etc.. etc.. etc.. etc..

THATS LIFE. Get over it.

the problem is EBAY screwed you either way. THATS why the sellers have to take these tactics.

One seller can PUSH another out by "undercutting" them.

but the legitimate seller can not meet that price without LOSING MONEY. the fraud seller can AFFORD to "pay" out in losses till he puts the legit seller out of business then he can resume normal prices and profits. One way to do this is to TRANSFER some of the cost to shipping where there is no fees. you can now afford to lower your price by the AMOUNT of the fees saved (which can be a few dollars on some items!)

the legit seller does not have this luxury so they fold or try to adopt the same practice.

a $1 item with $49 shipping is NO DIFFERENT to the end user who has SOME BRAIN matter left than $44 and $6 shipping.

YOUR GOING TO PAY $50 no matter what. shut your greedy frelling mouth up about excessive shipping!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR this crap makes me mad.

EBAY is the bad guy here not the sellers not the buyers. there should NEVER have been feedback against buyers and a seller should NEVER have to pay fees for a sale that FAILS.

I understand why Ebay changed the feedback system. The new system will more accurately reflect how good the seller is. I'm certian many buyers did not leave bad feedbacks for fear of recieving a negative themselves. Buyers however can now use the feedback for purposes of blackmail and I'm certian a small percentage do. I find it very strange how Ebay knows what shipping and handling costs for items yet seem so clueless when it comes to knowing what items on Ebay are stolen or fakes. Alot of sellers have a very small margin of profit and many honest sellers have left Ebay because of the increased prices they charge and lack of ability to be heard in a dispute. After Christmas is over I think many more honest sellers will call it quits on Ebay.
The way Ebay has everything structured it's a good place to sell junk laying around the house and a fantastic place to unload stolen mechandise. Paying 10% when the product cost nothing is hardly a big concern to those people. Also this kind of person will not be very hurt by negative feedback.
Usually it's a fast buck and then gone.
SO now Ebay is a great place to buy and sell stolen goods and also a good way to rid of junk.
Ebay is not a good place to sell if your an honest person that is trying to make living selling a product.

I used to be addicted to eBay, spending thousands of dollars a month in vintage clothes, and even selling some of my own vintage clothes on eBay so I could make room for more. But I just can't stand them anymore. They have made the marketplace so unfair for sellers AND buyers. For sellers because of the inequality of the feedback mechanism, the push for lower shipping costs (to free shipping, really), and the hikes in fees. For buyers, allowing big box stores to sell on it like everyone else and weeding out the smaller sellers that usually had the interesting and inexpensive stuff.
So my husband, my partner and myself (User Experience & Web Designers) decided to start OUR OWN MARKETPLACE FOR VINTAGE. It's called Market Publique (http://www.marketpublique.com), and it's going to be fair to both buyers and sellers. We hope to launch in April 2009.
