Alright, folks. Here we go. This is the new Palm OS, fresh out of Access, the company that bought PalmSource during the Great Post-.Com Boom Palm Upheaval. The OS supports Linux applications along with classic Garnet apps from the previous generation.
Access has published PDFs on the OS and framework and there is some expectation that the OS will be hit Japan sometime this year and, if the angels smile down upon us, we too will be able use this new OS.
I’m more excited about ALP 3.0 than Android. Palm OS has skin in the game, as they say, and has to win on this or it’s toast. I’ve been waiting for this day for years, friends, and I’m quite excited.
UPDATE – As many have noted this isn’t what you’ll be seeing on upcoming Palm devices. Palm writes:
I know that you never come right out and say that this is Palm’s official new OS, but just to be clear, the new Access OS is not the same as the OS we are developing. The development of our next OS is being handled all internally, and we are on track to introduce products based on that OS in the first half of 2009.

I haven’t heard of any manufacturers that are actually going to put this on their hardware.
It’s pretty safe to assume that Palm won’t, at this point. So, who will?
ALP 3.0 sounds like a nice OS :) but I’ve never really liked using Palm. Prefer a Blackberry or iPhone
What about all the treos floating around out there? This might be interesting if it breathes some new life into old hardware. In fact, maybe a competitor could put a dent (or another nail in the coffin for) in palm hardware sales if an os appears that makes Treos cool (or useful).

Excited by what? This isn’t Palm OS, and it has nothing to do with Palm. Access acquired, or consumed if you will, PalmSource, who then developed its own Linux platform with a Garnet compatibility layer baked inside.
The “real” Palm OS is sitting in a petri dish inside Palm, and will remain there for another 12-18 months before it rolls out.
Is this an available product? And is it compatible with “legacy” Palm devices, like the Treo 680?

Your article doesn’t say — maybe Palm hasn’t said — whether the OS will be available as an upgrade on newer models of Palm phones, like the Centro or the latest Treo. I really hope so, because I, too, have been curious to see what they’d throw down. It looks promising.
I’d say no chance. Believe me, I wish it were true, but I’d say no chance at all.
Give it up Palm. Nobody cares…And when I say “nobody” I mean me.
There are GLARING errors in this article. That is the OS from Access. It is the company that purchased the Palm OS a few years back.
Palm is now developing their own Linux OS which has NOTHING to do with this OS.
It is highly unlikely you will ever see this Access OS on any future Palm devices.
sounds like this will not hit IMO.
I normally hate the user interface of Palm OS, it was so oldish. This screenshot makes it look mainstream, keeping up with the trend. I liked one of their Sprint phones but hated the OS UI. Let’s hope it comes to the US soon.
That acquisition must be looking more and more bleak by the day…
Exactly what I thought as soon as I read this, ha.
Why does this somehow look so… Symbian S60v3′ish?
Well, at least they swapped the battery bar from the left to the right ;)

Those icons are really atrocious.
Why did Palm drop that mini notebook computer they were working on? They were actually ahead of the curve and for some reason canceled it. Now every computer manufacturer is trying to get into the game as quickly as possible. It could have been theirs.
Wired had an article about the creator of the iPod at Apple now working for Palm. He’s certainly behind whatever Palm does next and I can’t believe that it’s not something in the realm of a mini notebook.

Beauty and the beast versus functionality it seems a difficult to grasp combination. A hit and mis the smarthphone industrie suffers with, Iphone very nice top software lacks on the call me call you bit , blackberry sleek fast great mail just that, Windows Mobile yeah mmmkay messy versatile options needed a pimp to stand out with a touch flo come on. Palm need to take the market serious as it could offer so much more. Apple as a newbe in the market is a winner even if the iphone lacks on the phone side it appeals to young and older generations.
I don’t know about the OS, but they could have done a better job picking the icons! It just looks …well… boring!
Especially if you compare it to the iPhone, etc..
WOW! Great work Palm. Ten years too late
