Apple goes political with California’s Prop 8

In an attempt to stay non-partisan, here is Apple’s official statement on California’s Proposition 8 that aims to eliminate rights of same-sex couples to marry.

Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

  • This is so sad!

  • It sucks that I have to point out that I mean this only as a joke but…..

    Apple loves queers.

  • One person’s sad is another person’s happy.

  • Props to Apple for its stance on human rights.

  • Apple needs to stick to what they know, and that’s making computers. They need to butt out of making political statements, especially those which flicks boogers in the fact of California voters who do believe as I do that gay marriage destroys the fabric of the family.

It WILL affect my future purchases of Apple products.

  • I have nothing particularly against gay marriage, but I’m sick to death of hearing what “Apple” thinks about things. They’re perpetuating the stereotype that the company is nothing more than Steve Jobs, incorporated. They deserve everything they get when their stock takes a hit once Jobs leaves.

And really, is it necessary to start taking political positions on things? Apple has become the business equivalent of Hollywood actors who stick their faces in everybody’s business and “know better” than the average person. My guess is this was a business decision, that they studied a myriad of “cost-benefit” type studies and came to this conclusion – but its not necessary, and it does nothing to bring in new customers.

I hope Apple tells me where it stands on the election, so I can make a TRULY informed decision.

  • How is that apple can turn itself into a political action committee and none of the rest of us have the same right? It is a shame that a company can take the profits of it’s sales and tie it’s loyal customers to any type of political stance. It would be great for Steve Jobs or any other Apple employee to take this stand. That’s their right. It is something else entirely for a company to blatantly disregard it’s customers by taking this political stand.

How are those people who have been loyal apple customers supposed to react to this? If you feel that gay marriage is immoral it will be difficult to ever buy from apple again. Apple should be concerned about the civil rights of it’s customers. Which I believe they have violated by taking sides on this issue.

Apple needs to remember it’s “1984″ commercial. The message was that we were all controlled by the state (big brother) and the mac would free us. So much for freedom from apple. We are expected to follow the socialist liberal agenda and continue to buy apple products. No thanks! My macs are headed for ebay. My .mac account will be closed. I need a computer not big brother.

I bit the apple and found half a worm, so I spit it out.

  • So…if one day we find that “gay gene,” then that means that those who abort babies that may have some form of disability will have the ability to hit “ABORT” when they are pregnant with a child that may have that gay gene…how convenient.

I hope that Apple realizes that people UNDERSTAND that buying their products is in a way supporting what they support. So…maybe people will think twice about supporting Apple if they know that the company has gone from vendor to politics. Civil Rights has become a package that people wrap stuff up in to try and make it legit. All of a sudden the Boy Scouts are bad and Kiddie Porn people have “rights.” This twisted rationalization will end up biting them in the butt.

  • I was going to switch from PC to Mac around January but this has definitely changed my decision. Way to go, Apple.

    YES TO PROP 8

  • Way to go Apple… Lame.
Stick to your over priced, glorified technology.

  • Dangit, I just bought a Mac too! Now I have to box that thing up and return it!!! Everything that was once right is now wrong and everything that was once wrong is now right. This world is truly upside down. Jesus is coming soon.

    VOTE YES ON 8

  • Much respect to Mac for standing up for human rights.

The rest of you are ignorant and probably would have opposed the abolition of slavery in 1865.

  • Because Apple has decided to draw a line in the sand on same-sex marriage I have decided not to to contribute to Apple’s $100,000 opposition of prop. 8 by paying money to Apple for any product for the foreseeable future.
Like Apple, I am putting my money where my mouth is.

Marriage is and always has been between one man and one woman.
Would you attend the wedding of two siblings? What about a father and daughter? Would you consider that a real marriage? Once you redefine marriage you open the door to anything. It’s just a matter of time before people will be demanding THE RIGHT to marry their pets, and they’ll call anyone who opposes them ‘intolerant’ and ‘bigoted’.
Will Apple contribute money to these people’s cause too?

I’m not angry, I don’t do ‘boycotts’ and I don’t judge people, but pretending this is about ‘rights’ is totally fallacious. Nobody has the right to redefine laws based on their sexual preference, a society has too much to lose from such a course of action.

You’d gladly call a man who sexually desires his daughter a pervert, but once marriage has been reduced to its lowest form (whatever you want it to be) you’ll have no choice but to allow him his ‘right’ to have her.

I don’t care if nobody does a thing, as long as my money doesn’t contribute to the destruction of sanity I won’t have that on my conscience.

  • It is hilarious to read the comments like “i will not buy from apple, I hate apple cause they are pro-gay marriage” Apple will make millions without you ;)… because GASP to your horror -conservative bigots- they also sell their products to other people ;) and your “boycott” won’t do much.

So for those techies right wing, “conservative”, self righteous bigots, you can wrap your stupid opinion and shove it up your ju-ju!

    • Wow that was a little hateful. Why is a being “conservative” a bad thing? I apologize for hurtful things “conservatives” may have done to you to make you so bitter. I don’t apologize for having morals based on something solid and not based on the evolving morals of the times.

Maybe Apple “Steve Jobs and Team” really believes this is a civil rights issue, unfortunately many “right wing techies” see it as a sin issue.

BTW as a person of color I wouldn’t have voted against the abolishment of slavery, if I could vote which I couldn’t have so I wouldn’t have, but if I could…. :)

      • what a great post Ben, it’s people like you that give me hope in humanity, and people like Casper who take that hope away. Thank you BEN! I hate that it’s “popular” to be leftist and liberal.

  • good job apple

alll you who vote yes on 8, go to hell. do you realy need to decide who gets married or not.

remind me to buy 100 macs sometime
