Wow, Far Cry 2 really does look that good

You know, I saw it at E3, I watched the trailers, and I was prepared for it to look nice, but this is ridiculous. That’s a print screen (click to embiggen) from about ten minutes ago up there. That graphics like this are even possible, let alone playable, on a machine that cost me under $800 to build a year ago, is insane. Imagine if I had the power to put on AA and rock the ultra-high geometries!

Perhaps they were right over at Digg. If you haven’t given PC gaming a shot, now is a better time than ever. With a $100 P45 mobo, a $75 sound card from Asus, $100 worth of nice RAM, a $150 Core2, and a $175 Radeon 4850, you can give games like Far Cry 2 the business — and every game that comes out on both consoles and PCs will look better and play better than on your 360 or PS3. It’s an investment you really should consider if you haven’t already.

  • I have a feeling, that PC gaming is almost dead :)
DRM, very long installations, driver problems, instability, difficulties with HD TV connection, no Dolby Digital sound, steering by keyboard etc. And on the other side very cheap consoles with all the new games released often before PC version and good exclusives never released on PC.

    • ‘Steering by keyboard’ is the best control layout currently available. Ever try and play a shooter with analog sticks? Miserable. You sound like someone who hasn’t played a PC game in years.

…Very cheap consoles with amazing new games? Come on. *cough*PS3*cough*

      • I definitely prefer playing shooters on a PC too. Find the console experience downright miserable. That being said, I think the author has a fair point about (relatively) cheap consoles offering compatibility and exclusive titles.

Devin is right about being able to build an inexpensive rig, and I can attest its fun to do. The thing is, a lot of the people who enjoy console gaming don’t also build systems on the side for fun. And that’s almost necessary to play PC games today, since the requirements keep going up while consoles stay the same – and console game quality improves on its own over the same time without any investment of time or money from owners. To qualify that statement a bit, its necessary if you want to keep getting the best quality for PC games.

Let’s revisit that PS3 comment in two or three years and see how it holds up.

        • I agree with that, but with the PS3 its ALWAYS “wait and see in X years”. If the PS3 ever really delivers I’ll be in line to pick one up.

My problem is the guy declaring PC gaming dead. You do need to put together a system (or at least be able to upgrade one) to take advantage of the potential savings…but you get the bonus of it being used for tasks other than gaming as well.

  • Ian, you are a retard…..

  • Why in the world would you even buy an X-Fi card to hook up to a reciever? that alone tells me you know very little about PCs…. Use SPDIF out to your reciever, or HDMI out of your video card.. if your ATI card is even remotely new it will have HDMI out with audio… oh ya, buy a better controller if it’s not working in some games!! You can’t get you ati drivers to output 1080p.. it’s just a @ucking resolution called 1920×1080.. get some new drivers, some fresh panties and get it right… holy $hit….

you find it hard to apply patches ?? I have never had any problems doing that.. if your that slow get steam… it will patch all your games for you and you can buy and download games from there as well…

sounds like you are having a miserable experience..it’s retarded people like you that gave a reason for consoles in the first place.. as they are pretty retard proof..

My XBOX 360 is not even a little comparable to my pc… GT 5 Prologue? I admit it looks good, but it is made just for their hardware, so if it didn’t look good I would be wondering what kind of tards are working over at Sony… by the way have you seen new tech demos on new PC hardware, it’s only about 10 time better than GT 5…….

oh another thing… people are saying that PC gaming is dead… it won’t die… the best ever selling video game of all time is a PC game.. it’s called World of Warcraft… 10 million subcribers :)

  • Ian you stick to ya kiddie consoles and you will be fine. All us men that like real hard core gaming machines will stick to pc! PC gaming is always and I think always will be better then consoles. Try a game like codwaw on ps3 then try it on pc!

  • I have just put together a system :)
I had to buy new copy of Vista – 64bit, because 32 bit could not handle the memory. I have serious problems with making ATI drivers to output 1080p 1:1 to may TV (in some games like Grid it’s fine, in others like Crysis no way to make it right). “Great” X-Fi card cannot produce Dolby Digital sound, so I need ugly 3 analogue cables to my amp to have surround sound.
The thing is loud as hell (comparable to X360, but 5 times bigger so cannot be hidden).
Aplaying patches is a nightmare (two games required complete reinstall because of problems with patches). My controller does not work in “Games for Windows” games
All in all a very miserable experience…
And still nothing comes even close to GT 5 Prologue :)
