Those of you with Sonos equipment already filling your abode with the sweet tunes of your music library and an iPhone or iPod Touch should promptly hit up Apple’s App Store and download their free app now. It may or may not be available right this second, but it should make its way to the App Store sometime today. There are two other Sonos apps currently available but they want you to pay $15 for each.
Having seen the app in person I can say that it’s very intuitive and easy to use. You will also be prompted to update your Sonos’ firmware to 2.7 today so that it is compatible with the software. So if you bought Sonos equipment in 2005 and you own an iPhone then you’re sittin’ pretty. A demo of the app in action and other screen shots are available after the jump.
But that’s not the only announcement Sonos has for today.
Sonos 2.7 unleashes 15,000 Internet radio stations from across the globe and free access to Last.fm and Pandora (everything syncs on the fly with both Last.fm and Pandora to your accounts online).
Other new features of Sonos System Software 2.7 include:
• Updated Rhapsody support with improved sound quality. Rhapsody now streams at 192 MP3 (versus 128 kbps WMA previously).
• Support for RTSP streaming protocol which allows for expanded Internet Radio coverage.
• Dutch and Swedish languages are now supported in the Sonos system software. Sonos already supports English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Actually,… there are enough iPhone & iPod video & audio apps in the market. What I’m really looking forward to is a free software for “cut & paste” on iPhone. Any existing ones that you know of? :)
I think you’re missing the point on this one. Its a controller for a really neat home audio system. Great use of the iphone/touch. Free from the company. and all around very cool.
Isn’t 128 WMA about the same as 192 mp3? Doesn’t this just waste bandwidth?
I have a Sonos with 3 zones. The free version looks great, but why would I ever pay $20 for their ZoneMaster app when my Sonos controller does the same thing? Sorry, but I think Sonos is messing up by charging twenty smackers for something Sonos owners get for free anyway. Maybe $1,2,3 sure, but $20? No way. No good business IMHO.
Zonemaster is not from Sonos, Ben. This is the official app from Sonos.
I love my Sonos. It just keeps getting better. On top of that I’m consistently impressed at how well it performs. It’s amazing how streamlined and intuitive the design is despite the underlying complexity. Great engineering/product management.
Ben, I’m pretty sure that the other apps aren’t from Sonos (but not positive)

Most important question is when are Logitech/SlimDevices going to release a free remote for their SqueezeCentre/Box?
:)
i live in colombia (south america) and both my sonos and last.fm players work lovely if they are independent. I have three zones and stream all my music all over my place. I also run last.fm on my mac and on my iphone and it works sweet. So i updated my sonos software this morning looking to stream last.fm all over my place and oh oh it only lets me scrobble but not play my stations. I thought it was a glitch so i contacted an online rep at Sonos and they let me know that Last.fm is only available in the US, UK and Germany via Sonos.
Can somebody help me figure out why i can stream last.fm from my mac, my pc, my iphone from Colombia but i cant via my Sonos system? Whats the logic behind it?
This rocks. The sonos system is great and this is a killer add on, for the wonderful price of FREE. i love having my controller in my pocket all the time now.
Instead of just controlling existing Sonos players, can you use the interface to stream directly to an ipod touch or phone???
No, it’s just a controller.
