A simple question: do you still have a landline telephone, or do you exclusively use a cellphone nowadays? Maybe you use both?
I ask because there’s some question as to whether or not all these election polls are accurate. Several of them only call people who have landlines, which excludes people who exclusively use cellphones—young voters and the tech-savvy (you guys), I’m going to guess. These voters tend to vote Democratic, so there’s talking heads on the likes of Fox News and MSNBC losing their minds—don’t trust the polls, they’re not accurate, England prevails, etc.
Thank you for your time, and may God bless America.

Is it the landline carry the same meaning as fixed line? Well, if that is the case, then I still need it at my home rite now for the sake of using the broadband service. But, I rarely (the big RARELY) use it to call anybody. Even I cannot memorize the number. What a shame…
My family still has a landline, mainly for enhanced 911 services. My town uses a reverse 911 to call if there is an emergency that could require us to evacuate. I also like the idea that 911 could easily find my home, if we called but could not accurately give our address (I have young children).
I only have my landline because of my package deal for DSL/phone. If I cancel the phone service, they’ll jack up the price on my DSL service, making it a wash. So, I may-as-well keep the phone line.
Have to use a landline here: I’m in an apartment that uses the phone system to buzz people in, and I don’t want my roommate to be screwed if he has to let someone in and my cellphone isn’t there.
In the UK, if you want an internet connection, you either get a phone line for ADSL, or you get cable. I have cable, but the pricing is structured in such a way that it basically costs nothing (in line rental) to get a phone line too.
Despite getting regular calls from Virgin Media trying to convince me to take a phone line for no increase on my bill, so far I have refused. I don’t see the point, and I like to be able to switch my phone off or put it on silent when I want to.
Polling only happens to land lines. So lets take a look at what needs to happen for the polls to work.
You have to have a land line.
You have to be home.
You have to answer it when you don’t recognize the number on Caller ID.
You then sit and answer the questions.
Also we don’t know how the questions are worded. They word them to mess with people and to get the answers they want. Its not so black and white, and no that is not a swipe at the election.
So phone polling stinks. Its not good. If you look in previous elections the polling was off every time by a pretty significant margin.
And for those keeping a land line for 911. Good news, its been a law for decades that every phone has to be able to call 911 regardless of if there is service or not. So if you have a jack and plug the phone it you can call 911 from it. The reverse system does not work though.
this polling method leaves out every single digg user which shows fewer democrat votes than actual.
I haven’t had a land line phone in about 6 years. I have cable internet and don’t see a reason to pay for a service I would never use.
We recently got a VOIP line from Comcast mostly because our cellphone coverage at home, on the couch in front of the TV, next to 2 large windows where we spend most of our time is – shall we say less than optimal – I CANT HEAR YOU NOW!!!
With no trees outside and the phone sitting untouched next to the window, the Verizon Treo 650 constantly loses signal and gets it back 20 seconds later with 2 or 3 bars…
Yes, I still have, for home telephone
Took land line out and unhooked burglar alarm.
Both sets of parents and two grandmothers quit calling because they were afraid of ‘using up your minutes’.
Put landline back after 2 year experiment. Hooked burglar alarm back up. Parents are happy.
I am using my land line quite frequently . It is comfortable and also safer than using the cellular phone , since the cellular radiation is meaningful . I have recently heard about an attractive technology to enable using the mobile-phone while placing the call via the land-line . This is been done based upon Bluetooth connectivity . What you have to do is just to plug a small device on the land-line outlet . The solution needs a small-size software to be downloaded to the cell-phone , however it must be a smartphone . It works perfectly with Nokia handsets . So land-line is not dead , but converged with the cellular handset . You can use your mobile phone’s contact list but the call will be routed via the PSTN . So you save money and avoid radiaion . The basic orientation related to this solution is on the company’s website http://www.v-tu.com .
