I’ve been fawning over this little netbook since last week and I can’t wait to get one, but I’ll have to wait until January for the MIE version. :( Hopefully I’ll get it in time for CES because lugging this 15-inch MacBook Pro is getting old. Spec-wise it isn’t very powerful, but it isn’t meant to be a desktop replacement either. The UI on the MIE version is very intuitive and runs a gaggle of Open Office applications. There’s a repository of applications and programs that can be added to the MIE Mini 1000, but we didn’t have any Internet access, so I wasn’t able to see what I could or couldn’t install. There is some regulation on what programs can be installed and they have to be in the HP MIE repository, but I’m sure you can “hack” it to run whatever you want. I could be wrong, though. All I know is that I want it and so long as it has an RSS reader then I’m good to go.

It looks great. How did the build quality feel?
Good enough. It’s no aluminum unibody MacBook.
Sweet… nice little machine and nice overall. Put the 16GB SSD drive in it and it’s a perfect road machine. That a review unit or travel to HP to view it?
Pre-production unit that they brought to NY.
Peter,
Please comment on the usability of the rather narrow-height touchpad with vertical buttons. Also, how well the screen resolution displays web pages.
The trackpad is quite small and the vertical buttons will take some getting used to. As far as the screen resolution goes, it’s quite clear, but I only demoed the Amy Poehler rap from SNL on YouTube. I didn’t have any qualms about anything, really. However, I would need more than 15 minutes with it to give it a fair assessment. I really liked the MIE interface and its size. I’ll have more when a review unit is sent to us.
Thanks, Peter.
It is amazing: every single netbook seems to have one glaring flaw (battery life, touchpad, keyboard, resolution, heat, etc.). I’m beginning to think the Intel Reference Design requires at least one facet of any netbook to be flawed.
he said ‘gaggle’ hehe.
Have you discovered what is the MIE repository address?
