hpmini

What would a netbook be without all sorts of tiny accessories? The HP Mini 1000 will have at least six of them; some available now and some available in January. Apparently available now is an extra three-cell battery, although I couldn’t find it listed on HP’s shopping site, the HP Wireless Laser Mini Mouse ($40), and the HP Bluetooth Pendant Headphones ($99). Pretty straightforward stuff and not necessarily specific to this particular model except for the battery.

Coming in January, though, will be a protective sleeve, a cool little USB flash drive that fits flush against the side of the case, and an adapter for hooking the Mini 1000 up to an external monitor (VGA only). No word on pricing or exact dates, unfortunately.

Hit the jump to see photos of everything.

Keyon : In order to connect the external display to their notebooks, they need to use a Mini VGA Display Adapter.
Brian : Where can I get one I have had no luck at local computer speciality stores or on Shop Hp.

Keyon : Please respond as a delay may cause a disconnection in our chat session.
Brian : So this is a 16 pin mini vga for apple and it is compatable with the mini?
    Keyon : Yes, exactly.

  • Just so you know, that mini VGA adaptor for a Mac will not work as there is no mini VGA port on this laptop. You need a USB to VGA adaptor which I have found on Newegg for around $50 USD. HP was smoking something when they told you this. Obviously Kenyon Googled ‘Mini VGA’ :/

    • So where can I buy the Mini VGA cable/adaptor for the HP Mini 1000?

      • Or at least USB to VGA adaptor?

      • why is HP CUSTOMER SERVICE like that? I also chatted with one of their REPS. I was told that ny HP MINI’s ULTRA WEIRD PORT was an eSATA port and I should get an eSATA to VGA out cable from any computer store. This is NOT AT ALL CORRECT! Why are these HP PEOPLE so IGNORANT with their product?

By the way, can anybody tell me where I can get this VGA adaptor? Thanks!

  • I am also frustrated with this. Please let me know if you find a source.

  • I also tried in vain and their tech support is ultra-uninformed;

Ralph : Could you please elaborate the issue?Gary Duke : Well, the other day I wrote it asking if there is a cable available for the mini. The rep pointed me to an amazon link for the apple cable.Ralph : Oh, okay.Ralph : Could you please provide me the Serial Number (eg: CNS34915MC) and Product Number (eg:DS542U) of your Notebook? You may find that on a sticker attached to the underside of the Notebook. Gary Duke : its the hp mini 1035nrGary Duke : i don’t have that infoRalph : Okay, not a problem.Ralph : Gary, I will provide a weblink which contains the information regarding the accessories of the Mini notebook>Ralph : Here is the weblink:Ralph : http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mini1000/accessories.html#accessoriesRalph : Please open the weblink and let me know if it provides you the required information?Gary Duke : M8639G/A — this is the model of the apple cable the rep told me to purchase for the mini 1035nrGary Duke : i am wondering where in the world the rep got this info. Gary Duke : you can look back if possible through the chat transcripts to find this.Gary Duke : i went out of my way to get the cable from the apple store, wasting time and money. the rep specifically said it would work on the mini 1035nr. uniequivocally. this is more the issue — the incorrect support info from a company as established as HP, causing a waste of time and money and a decrease in credibility.Gary Duke : here is a transcript of another person told to buy this cable from the internet:Gary Duke : Brian : Where can I get a mini VGA adapter so that I can hook up to an external monitor

Keyon : Yes, exactly.Ralph : Okay, let me check if it really supports your notebook model.Ralph : Gary, may I know what exactly is happening when you try to use this cable to connect the notebook to external monitor?Ralph : Are you with me?Gary Duke : HiGary Duke : The cable doesn’t fit at all. Gary Duke : It is the wrong cable entirely. The mini vga end of this cable is narrower and taller than the mini vga port on the 1035nrRalph : Gary, the narrow end of the cable must be connected to the USB port of the notebook and the VGA end of the cable must be connected to the VGA port of the notebook.Ralph : Have you tried to connect it in the same manner, I have mentioned?Gary Duke : hmmm…Gary Duke : just a secRalph : Okay.Gary Duke : no it is not a usb end… it is a 14 pin mini vga connectorGary Duke : see http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000068BSC/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_1?ie=UTF8&index=1Gary Duke : it doesn’t match the mini vga port on the 1035nr at all, which is much wider, and slimmer in height.Ralph : Gary, do you want to toggle the display from the Mini notebook to external monitor or trying to toggle the display of an external monitor to the Mini notebook?Gary Duke : i want to display the notebook on an external monitor. from the notebook to the monitor.. Gary Duke : I would like the cable at http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mini1000/accessories.html#accessories but it is not available. My problem is that the rep told me the apple cable will work the same and it doesn NOT.Ralph : Okay, then the smaller end of the cable must be connected to the USB port of the cable and the broader end must be connected to the VGA port of the cable.Ralph : Could you confirm if you have tried to connect it in the same manner I explained you?Gary Duke : the small end of the cable in no way is USB and would not fit into a any usb port. it has 14 pins as you can see in the photo
Gary Duke : yes i tried to stick it in a usb port. of course, it didn’t go in as it is totally not designed to go into a usb port. neither end. dig?

  • To END the STUPIDITY of HP CUSTOMER REPS, will somebody please tell them that the APPLE MINI VGA ADAPTER TO VGA CABLE does not work on the HP MINIs.

To all HP MINI OWNERS, DO NOT BUY the APPLE MINI VGA ADAPTER. Gary is DEFINITELY RIGHT! It doesn’t work on the HP MINI. Also, DONT BUY an eSATA to VGA Cable coz it doesn’t work also.

True, there is an HP MINI VGA CABLE ADAPTER but IT IS NOT YET AVAILABLE YET IN THE MARKET—even if HP promised that this will be out this January 2009. Fact is, there is a TECHNICAL PROBLEM with their MINI VGA CABLES. I dont know when will this be available—maybe in the next 1000 years.

But THERE IS HOPE!!! Go get a USB TO VGA OUT CABLE—widely available in NEWEGG, TOMSHARDWARE, EBAY, etc. around US$40 – 80. There is a WIRELESS EDITION—around US$150. This one works!

  • MANY THANKS Ging Red!

I can’t believe how ignorant those so called HP Technical Representatives are!

I’ve also received wrong information when I chatted with one of them.

What the hell are they waiting for to release their HP Mini VGA Cable Adapter? I’ve been waiting for it since I bought my Mini 1000 4 months ago.

Can’t they at least update us with the reason why this is taking so long and when they expect it to be released?

HP don’t seem to care about their customers do they?

  • Thanks- helpful- also waiting to be able to plug into projector for powerpoint slides- the HP support I emailed sent back that it was esata connector- and then sent me to the newegg.com site for a USB to VGA as you suggested.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812214012

Don’t know if that is the one you said works or not? How does a USB get to Monitor? Is it fast enough?

    • I have seen the link that you gave me. it doesnt look like the one that i got. try googling it as USB to VGA out. Look for a startech brand–the best of all brands. it is useful if you just wanna hook your hp mini to an lcd projector for powerpoint presentations. but dont expect real good dvd or hd-like output. But overall, it works!

  • I have just got off the phone with HP, trying to buy the HP Mini 1000 series VGA cables. They told me that the cable is at least 30 days out and the price is still unknown. I have checked with Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples, and Radio Shack. They have nothing that will help.

  • So… how many different versions of the Mini did HP make?!?!? It seems as though every time I turn around there’s one that’s completely different from mine with different ports and everything. I’ve got the 1030NR and it doesn’t have the eSATA port but it DOES have an HDMI out so I don’t need this converter you guys are talking about. Mine’s pretty full fledged too: 1gb RAM, 16gb flash drive, 1.6ghz proc, 3 USB Ports (one recessed proprietary), HDMI, headphone out, wireless, 10.2″ screen… it’s really cool. I love it.

  • I also have the 1030NR. Love this little computer. The only thing I wish it had is built in bluetooth. Anyway, you do not have HDMI output. You have a proprietary expansion port that has nothing to plug into it. Please HP get me this cable. I am really regretting buying this computer with only the promise of this cable. I bought it for only two reasons and one was watching internet tv on my plasma tv. I watch the website everyday and it was really upsetting to see the January 2009 turn to Early 2009.

I love the machine and the 1030NR is confured great for my purpose (other than the blue tooth that is easily fixed). Get me this cable, I don’t care if it is $70!

  • Re: VGA Adapter for HP Mini 1001TU

The latest update from HP (for Australian customers) is that the delay in supplying Mini 1000+ customers with this VGA accessory is due to the following broad reason:

“A manufacturing issue with China” (No prize for guessing who they use to create their products now!!!)

Allegedly, Chinese new year celebrations must have gone over time and this has inadvertently impacted the quality of this manufactured product in such an adverse manner thus failing to meet HP’s high quality standards! (I should write disclaimers!!!)

This drama is beginning to look like a manic relationship of love vs. hate.
I love the mini 1000 series but hate the HP product website and customer (lack of) service.
May have to investigate my old Fujitsu Lifebook P5020 as it came with a silly proprietary mini-VGA connector that (if I’m in luck) is the same form factor as the HP series… will keep you posted…

  • Like everyone else I’m waiting. I bought this laptop to teach my art classes at Long Beach State. So far… using my old computer.

Tradeoff: stupid new connector is much thinner than VGA making a MUCH sexier case than any of the competition machine I’ve seen – I wouldn’t really want those. (and it might save HP $ somehow… and/or make them $ when we find out the price for this tiny piece of wire)

But, we’re dealing with an inept company that doesn’t care and is too big to tell it’s hands what the feet are doing. It’s insulting that you have to spend 5 minutes with one of their techs on all the spex on your machine when all you want to know is: arrival date on HP Mini > VGA.

I bought mine at Costco which has a 6-month return policy. I don’t want to take it back, but I will if I have to.

There is no doubt in my mind that HP sucks! What I’m not clear on is if they suck more than other maufacturers… or only as much.

    Frustrating!

  • Take note, the costco return policy is 90 days, not 6 months, for computers and tvs. Not sure it that will provide enough time for us.

  • hola , i bought the mini , it fits great in my daypack , and after getting home with my new plasma , and i cant get it conected , any thing new from hp,steve

  • I cannot believe the answers HP is issue on this. I truly hope they release the cable soon…

  • Here’s the latest insider info from HP (my friend works there) regarding our MINI VGA CABLE concerns… HP has the cables made in CHINA. However, because of the economic downturn, their CHINESE CONTRACTED COMPANY closed. This means, HP still has to look for another SUB-CONTRACTING COMPANY for the job. And this causes the delay in the release of the cable To date, no company either in CHINA or elsewhere in the world is making the MINI-VGA CABLE. That is why, it will take a long wait again for it to be released in the market. My friend’s prediction? It will be sometime June or worse, October 2009. In the meantime, get a USB TO VGA CABLE if you intend to hook your HP MINI to an LCD Monitor for powerpoint presentation. If you use it for powerpoint purposes, the video quality is just okay. But dont expect DVD or HD-like output. But generally, it’s okay—as in, not bad. Presentable! If i may recommend, I got a STARTECH BRAND and it works fine with my presentation when i hooked it up with my LCD Projector.

  • Well if its going to be that long, then a USB to VGA will have to do…..You mentioned the quality being good enough for a powerpoit presentation but not for watching a DVD….BUt what about a second monitor…that what I want the cable for.

  • JesD, the USB TO VGA thing also works as an extension monitor (as long as it’s VGA-enabled). You can watch DVD and the likes but don’t expect a real clear display coz this is still on ANALOG technology—not as clear as those ports that use HDMI and other high definition (digital) signals.

  • Hi everybody. I am really pissed off about HP! I can’t believe that they put in the market a product like that. Anyway..I live in Taiwan…I have looked for the doomed cable everywhere.. Finally I have found the main HP store in Taiwan which has told me they are going to order and the next week it will be here. I have no hope, but if I finally get it I will make you know. By the way.,.it’s freaking expensive (Around 65USD). Hope to write you soon with good news!

  • Thanks GING…nice to know

Jesus- Keep us posted becuase if they are ordering it….that means they are out

  • To all HP MINI 1000 CONSUMERS, I know you are all very wary as to being lied to and misinformed by HP PEOPLE regarding the availability of an HP MINI VGA ADAPTER. In fact, the HP FORUM at this web address:

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Display&thread.id=38

has been receiving a lotta posts from HP MINI USERS like us who anxiously await for the cable that never was. In fact, one blogger threatened a class suit of FALSE ADVERTISING on HP’s part to sell a NOTEBOOK, advertise it to be VGA cable, when in fact no such cable is available.

But you know what? The sad part of this blog was, it was immediately edited by HP PEOPLE. They are now resulting to suppressing the truth as to what really happened to their MYSTERIOUS CABLE, which to date is STILL NOWHERE IN SIGHT. HP won’t even have the decency to tell us the real reason for the delay.

At first, they told us the delay was due to the CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS. Then, Valentine’s Day came and still no cable. So, what will be HP’S next press release on the cable? Delay due to ST. PATRICK’S DAY festivities????

This is the last HP product that I will ever own. I am so VERY DISAPPOINTED with the way HP handled this mess!

  • I share the same disappointment and frustration as you Ging Red.

I can’t believe how HP treats their customers!
This is total BS as far as I’m concerned!

  • I can’t believe this. Like you all, i’ve been waiting since last november for the vga cable. and when i bought my mini, the sales guy at Future Shop never told me this cable wasn’t available, while emphasizing the fact that the vga port was available. I work with this computer about 10 hours per day — it gives me a headache. although i love this little thing when i take notes in class, i have to work on my old desk computer for everything else! I would never have thought that a company such as HP would do such a thing to their customers. please keep us posted about that cursed cable…

  • WTF? back in the box it goes.. no vga, no cable? here comes the return HP!

  • Do we have a case for a class action suit? Anyone? :P Can we threaten and just get the adapter cables for free? :)

  • look at this side: http://h20386.www2.hp.com/CanadaStore/Default.aspx
It is the hp canadian store, search vga cable
and than you can buy the hp vga adapter for the mini

  • Response from HP yesterday:

Actually, we do not have the updates yet as to when a video adapter will be available. However, I have one thing here to share. The HP Mini 1035NR Notebook has a USB port in which you can use to connect to a monitor. All you need to have is a USB to VGA port adapter. We do not offer such adapter, but you can locate that in another online or hardware store. You can also search that in google it

  • RE: VGA Adapter for HP Mini 1001TU

After researching the many excuses from HP and finding no suitable VGA cables I have found a quality workable solution.

I purchased a Rextron USB2 to SVGA adapter from CX.com.au ($129) and as the HP Mini only has 2 USB ports I purchased a USB To 2 X PS/2 Adaptor for PS/2 Keyboard & Mouse from adelong.com.au ($9.95)

This setup allows for perfect picture quality on my current LCD (Viewsonic VA903) even when running the adapter through an ATEN Pettite KVM switch and lets me use an external keyboard and wireless mouse at the same time.

I don’t think I will wait (or purchase) the official manufactures VGA adapter as this arrangement is 100% satisfactory!

  • The HP Mini VGA cable has been available for purchase for a few weeks on the HP Australia Online shop. I purchased one Feb 26 and it arrived in the mail yesterday (March 12), and is working well so far. Not easy to find and it seems HP customer service isn’t even aware of this. ha.

  • I’ve finally ordered mine from the Canadian HP Site.
I should be receiving it next week.
I was lucky because the operator who took my order said it was the last one in stock.
I’ll let you know when I receive it.

  • Hi

I’m hoping to get the HP Mini… have you had any luck with the mini VGA cable?

How much did you pay for it?

    Thanks!

  • This notebook dont sale Turkye. Sorry :(

  • hI, I buy USB -VGA adapter in “USB fever” (google search), with: USB-vga Vga->HDMI vga–DVI ( 3 in 1 adaptors). http://www.usbfever.com/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=33 , Resolution: – 1400 x 1050 8, 16, 32 bits color. Note:- 1680 x 1050 8, 16, 32 bits color (will be available later).
I also Think: I can’t believe how ignorant those so called HP Technical Representatives are!
Regards of Chile. Sudamérica. The Mini 1000 is perfect, but the vga port….. !!!!

  • I’m from BKK. I bought my hp mini1000 last month. I called to hp Thailand. The staff told me that they don’t know yet when vga adapter will be available. It seems hopeless, too. If anyone plan to buy hp mini1000, please reconsider!!!!

  • Just like the rest of you, I’m waiting for the mysterious cable as well. Who knows when it will be available. The HP site shows the item, but it’s “Out of Stock.” (http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/FY828AA/1?jumpid=in_r329_personalization/browse2/PDP_PDP)
It shows as $19.99 (minus a $5 instant rebate), for those of you who quoted a lot more.

To everyone who can’t wait, try the solutions on this site: http://www.displaylink.com/shop.html

And to all of those who posted that they got the cable, or some other solution, but didn’t include a link or any other information to help the rest of us out… you’re just wrong… or lying.

    Hope this information helps someone/anyone.

  • Prof.Dr. Gal Dini - April 8th, 2009 at 4:43 pm GMT+5

I also bought a mini HP and it~s an incredible computerm but this HP Mini VGA cable is impossible to found. So how can you get into a presentation with your laptop if your not able to conect into a data show: Have to save in a pendrive and use somebodyelses computer?
    Such a shame!!!
i brought it to Brasil and not anyplace in teh world you can find this fk cable!!

  • IT seems that displaying the MUCH-AWAITED MINI VGA CABLE ONLINE is a CHEAP TRICK on HP’s part to appease now very IRATE HP OWNERS. In the HP FORUM: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Display&thread.id=38&view=by_date_ascending&page=9, one HP OWNER found out all about this CHEAP TRICK HP is trying to pull. It read:

“ha ha ha! VERY CHEAP TRY HP! You guys wanna throw that EXTREMELY CHEAP SHOT on us by fooling us that the HP MINI VGA CABLE is already AVAILABLE ONLINE only to FIND OUT THAT IT IS ALREADY OUT OF STOCK????

You really think we are that stupid to fall for that one, huh??? OH well, not me. I already got my USB TO vga cable two months ago and will NEVER BUY your NON-EXISTENT (or should I say, already “OUT OF STOCK”:smileywink: HP MINI VGA CABLE even if you put it up on sale at 10 pieces for $1.”

Why put it up online only to be told that it’s OUT OF STOCK??? This leaves me wondering, is the MINI VGA CABLE EVER AVAILABLE? Or is there really one that actually exists. Been checking lots of sites, all I find are pictures. Try ordering one and you’ll be told that IT IS NOT YET AVAILABLE. Very bad HP—-VERY BAD!

  • in the Philippines where can i find the HP VGA CABLE
    and how much its cost?

  • Hi!
the cable is available at the HP store, i just bought mine. but then again, nothing to brag about, they only take orders, the cables are not even in stock and the sales rep didn’t know when they’ll get in… so good luck getting them anytime soon…

  • I was able to score a few from HP a few days ago. I received my cable and have the extra one up on ebay if you are interested. They’ve raised the price to $29.99. I don’t know when they will be in stock again.

  • SO you guys must not be used to being the first to have a new model.

I bought the Sony PS3 on release and it was months of BS. The I bought SoCom for PS3 and it was one patch after the other for months.

When you see something new like a propeitery port. There will be months of BS.

Good news is This BS port is supposed to not only attach to an external video but eventually they will transmit data over the same port.

    Anyway Patience is a virtue.

  • Good new technology.Thnaks…

  • HP VIDEO CABLES IN STOCK> I ordered mine 2 days ago from HP web site. It arrived and worked. My situation was that my LCD screen died. I could not use a usb to video cable because you need to see the LCD screen to follow the installation instructions. The HP video cable plugged right in and worked. I had to press fn F2 to turn it on .
I now have all my files backed up so it can go in for repair. I am very pleased.
