Is Apple a bunch of liars or damn liars?

The ever-sassy Adrian Kingsley-Hughes is pointing out that Apple is essentially lying like Satan lied to man about the cancer-causing potency of high-fructose corn syrup. In “Bean Counter,” for example, Apple suggests that Microsoft spends more on advertising than on “fixing Vista.” Adrian tells the honest truth:

For each $1 of sales Apple spends:

– 1.9 cents on Advertising
– 3.3 cents on R&D

For each $1 of sales Microsoft spends:

– 2.6 cents on Advertising
– 13.9 cents on R&D

This would be interesting except for the fact that Microsoft has to spread that 13.9 cents over 89,809 employees, most of whom, presumably, are building new software products to replace Vista. Apple’s 28,000 employees are also hard at work building hardware, something Microsoft rarely has to worry about, so we’d assume there is a 10 cent spend in that $1 on prototyping and manufacturing. Apple also produces approximately 20 real products – most of them retreads of old products – while Microsoft has plenty of teams producing stuff that may never see the light of day. OS X is already strong and steady – it doesn’t need a Vista moment to make it better – and the products are generally popular. And those Vista/Windows ads did suck.

Again, Kingsley-Hughes is essentially trying to get a rise out of us MacTards. Negative Mac stories are delicious link-bait and ZDNet could use them some link bait – no harm no foul. That said, we should always remember that no matter how jovially bumbling John Hodgman appears, Microsoft is still number one in terms of market share. Calling Apple out for trying to convince people to buy their products is un-American and frankly socialistic. Could Marx’s evil theories behind this scurrilous, vindictive vituperation? Perhaps, friends. Perhaps.

  • Umm… Apple originally called Microsoft out for trying to sell their products (with a greater advertising budget). Double standard much Mactard?

  • uhm, mac is not saying anything about pc’s ad budget. He’s commenting on the fact that pc would rather spend more money on advertising than fixing Vista.

  • Gee I thought all Microshit fanboys were saying Vista didn’t need fixing! Even Ballmer has given up on Vista and is not pushing the next WOW, Vista Service Pack 3 that they are calling Windows 7!

If you think Apple’s little ads killed off Vista you give waaaay too much credit to them. Vista failed because it sucked and apparently, still does so MS will not even call it by name in the OWN $300 million worth of ads! LOL!

  • Was Microsoft lying when they told us the “WOW” was going to start?

  • because apple already has a good OS which is not needing much fixing, so they spend big on advertisement.

  • when MSFT puts out a press release that says that they are spending 300 million on a ad campaign — that should scare the competition. but if the competition does not get scared, they provably will make fun of it. the bean counter is funny, topical, and to my mind a very clever response.

  • I agree with Karla, it was meant to be a cleaver play on how much MS spent on a week ad campaign,

  • Interesting point made here. But who really believes ads these days. They can’t be trusted IMO.

  • Apple’s 28,000 employees are also hard at work building hardware, something Microsoft rarely has to worry about, so we’d assume there is a 10 cent spend in that $1 on prototyping and manufacturing.

Not to mention that a percentage of those employees are actually retail store workers.

    Interesting point made here.

  • It was funny, and not meant for in-depth analysis by a bunch of geeks. Lighten up eggheads.

  • What does Apple spend the other 94.9¢ on? Steve Jobs’ black turtlenecks can’t cost that much.

  • Hi, I'm a PC - Macs Suck - November 2nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm GMT+5

Let’s look at the reality here: Mac has been bombarding us with all those gay mac/PC commercials for a while now. We all know it’s because the majority of the world, not just market, are PC users. There’s a reason for that. I won’t go into it either because every gay mac user is going to have some biased opionion, and become unglued, and act irrational and blurt out soemthing stupid out of pure emotion…lol.

Anyway, I have a pc and a mac….and of course, my pc is, and always will be way faster than a mac will ever be and of course, there’s more software. See, that all speaks for itself…but macs have to bombard with those commercials just to get people to consider getting one…which is so funny and actually show’s how ironic it is that they are spending so much on that retard Adrian who should be nomitated for the worst acting in a movie (Die Hard). Well, that’s my input and what I say goes. So all you feminine mac users, save your breath and replies because you can’t say anything that’s already been said, and you’ll never change the minds of people because the proof is in the pudding. Just look at the stats. They will tell you everything!
