I don’t know if I am writing this because I completely and utterly agree with CrunchGear or because I saw my Apple story slipping to the bottom of the feed below What.Cd invites, but this ought to start another fun flame war.
Face it folks, Blu-Ray is headed to the pooper can. But don’t get me wrong, I love Blu-Ray. My copy of 2001 on my 1080p 56″ Samsung “son of Jesus” TV looks fantastic. I buy nearly every new movie on the B-Ray and between my roommates and I, I think we have replaced a good chunk of our DVD collection.
What is killing Blu-Ray for most people though? Well the answer to that is simple. It’s too f*cking expensive. $300 for a player, $35 for a movie and a lack of selection is cutting off the option for it to take off and blow up. In the current financial crisis that we are suffering in this country no one is going to be dropping that kind of money anytime soon. Gas is $2.65 a gallon because no one is driving. And eBay is falling off the face of the earth because no one has money and is willing to throw it nilly-willy to the wind on a format that honestly doesn’t penetrate that deep (or for other items either).

I don’t think blu-ray is dying really, the video store (rentals) I work in is seeing TONS of new blue-ray people coming and most of them are happy plus it seems like there is still room for cool blu-ray features on the discs, but there is one thing making me mad…. High Definition.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand that people want that, but the first thing I thought of when I heard about blu-ray is the disc size. Where is the standard definition blu-rays holding 7 movies on them? TV Shows are even more important here, buying a anime series and having 3 episodes on each disc has always pissed me off… especially when things like DBZ have hundreds of episodes.
I just looked up Naruto on torrents, the full series, 80 gigs… that means they could cram that on 2-3 discs with plenty of room for features and trailers, and I would preorder that even if it was $80 just so I could stick a disc in and leave it there for a few days if i want while still watching tons of episodes.
With upscaling the only reason not to do this is just to scam us out of more money, which wont work on me, Ill get a burner and make them myself otherwise.
I’ve already seen that the players will be below 100 or right around it soon, and in our case, .99 cent rentals on monday, the movies and player wont be that big of a deal anymore, just the TV, which would be solved again with SD BR DISCS!!!!!
$300 for a player? you can get them for half that price
$35 for a movie? What are you smoking.. average priced paid by most that buy blu ray’s is nearly half that amount as well. I have around 50 blu ray movies and paid average of $18. for them. Have never paid over $26 for a movie.
Blu ray is doing well and about to explode with sales..
I hope someone saves all these BS articles to throw them back in the author’s faces in a few months..
To Major & Michael ( Comments above )
Is is so very, very, very obvious that you both work for Sony.
Blu Ray is SO DEAD, I can smell the rotting corps from here ….
Bye, Bye, Blu Ray…..
