Good for…
…people who send text messages or e-mail all day long. Sprint bills this phone as “the ultimate texting machine” and, while that might be a slight misnomer (everyone knows the ultimate texting machine would be some sort of robot that answered all your e-mails and text messages, showed emotion, and was capable of rational thought), I found the Rant to come pretty close thanks to a great keyboard and simple UI.
It’s a good choice for the person who likes the idea of a smartphone or a pocket PC (or whatever they’re called now) but doesn’t want to deal with all the features. There’s no touchscreen here, there’s no stylus, and there aren’t menus buried within menus buried within menus. It’s just a phone with a little added kick. It’s not that bulky either. There’s a little junk in the trunk thanks to the keyboard but it’s not that noticeable; the Rant will fit in all but the tightest of pockets.
The UI that Sprint loaded on the Rant works pretty well because you can customize it to your liking. The main screen is made up of a series of “tiles” that, when selected, display a few various programs that you can launch. For instance: the Google tile.
Hey, I use Google! When I first selected it, up popped selections for Google Maps, Calendar, G-Mail, Notebook and YouTube. Well I don’t really use Notebook and I’m not a big YouTube-on-your cell phone guy, so I replaced those two options with Google Reader and Google Calendar. You can do similar things with the other tiles. Nice.
Not so good for…
…people who want a more robust online experience. The actual web browser will do in a pinch, but you’re not going to sit and surf from site to site on your phone for very long. That’s a minor gripe, though, as I didn’t find too much I didn’t like about this device. I never thought I’d get along with a non-smartphone, yet here we are. The only thing missing for me is a better browsing experience, but that’s not what this phone’s all about and it’s, admittedly, expecting too much out of a $50 device.
Conclusion
Great phone, great keyboard, great price. It’s perfect for text-happy kids and also for adults who want e-mail and text messaging without all the other smartphone hoopla.

bottom line, this is a good phone, but its durability is very, very low. mine just broke and all i did was have it in my pocket for an hour. my cousin is on her 3rd Rant right now. No, we don’t abuse them.
u r soooo stupid! My purple rant is the best! Maybe if u took care of it (as in use it, charge it, dont loose it or keep it in hot places), the buttons wouldn’t of fallen off. theres a keyguard LOCK specifically so u DONT go on the internet…this goes in the same lines of taking care of it… read the manual before u get all mad bout it.
Though sometimes when my phone was placed securely in my pocket, locked, i would move around to the point where it would push star-back and then it would unlock itself.

i agree,this phone sucks, first, you cant put ringtones on it, without paying a million dollars buying them from sprint. secondly, I was able to zoom with the camera for like..2 seconds now it dosent. now whenever i try to record videos, it freezes and goes back to home screen. needless to say. this phone is crap..

my samsung rant i got yesterday, and when i try to turn it on, it goes to the loading screen and freezes… its a great phone otherwise, im just having a problem with mine.
My phone did the same thing – I have had 3 of these things and every one has froze and never worked again!
I had this problem also, luckily I had the warranty still, but the Rant still has many problems
i haven’t had any problems with mine, and i love it!
this problem was fixed in a later firmware. remember to update your phone AS SOON as you turn it on the first time. tell the sprint store assistant to turn the phone on and update it for you, just in case it doesn’t work the first time, the phone DOES go online by itself but only to check for updates and such, i’ve never had any charges for internet use even though i never disable my sprint vision
Yeah mine does that occasionally but it works afterwards…. I like the rant it is perfect for my texting habbits and perfect for my loss of directions, also the 2 megapixel camera is the best camera phone i have ever had clear as day
Comparing the Samsung Rant to the LG Rumor, this thing is a piece of heaven.

Every phone has its minor glitches, you guys just gotta realize that.
I admit it does tend to freeze up and sometimes while I’m texting it tends to have a seizure but I just quickly hit the ‘end’ button and retry what I was texting. Other than that I haven’t had any real problems with it.
Sometimes all the phone needs is to be shut off for a few minutes and given a rest.
i’ve had two rants within a six week period… after a week or so of use, the display began “freezing”. Sprint tech support said it was the result of a sofware problem.. and asked me to return to the retailer and exchange the phone for another. i’ve had the second Rant less than ten days and have the same issue. i’m second guessing if it’s all that great of a product.
I have the rant, and am on my 3rd phone already because of the problems it has. It freezes, reboots itself, doesn’t hold my favorites or recent history in gps, shuts off when i plug it in, stops ringing when I touch it, doesnt hold more than a days worth of history, etc. etc. etc. All three have had the same or similar problems and sprint wont do anything about this problem either. All they seem to want to do is erase and restore the phone or give me the same one again. And these were all brand-new out-of-the-box phones. They’re garbage and I don’t have anything nice to say about sprint either.
The SAME thing happened to me. I can’t stand sprint they are ridiculous and have terrible customer service. I can’t wait to get rid of the “rant” and sprint. Don’t get the phone. It shuts off and doesn’t chare properly.

YES! I have had these SAME problems with the rant! The very first day I got it, it froze up on me. I chalked it up to me not charging it for long. But as the months went on, the freezing got worse. Followed by the screen freezing, then the phone resetting itself *mind you, the frozen screen still frozen* then the phone would turn back on. After about two months of this *and google maps giving me a message saying “Uncaught Acception, application terminated” I brought it back to sprint, they ran some diagnostics on it, told me that they couldn’t fix it, and they gave me a refurb. phone. I had the refurb. phone for just under a week, and now when i try to unlock the phone to use it, it freezes up and I have to hit the power off button to get to the main screen. I’m over the rant. I bought my self a Palm and called it a day. I was wondering if anyone else was having these same problems…apparently, I’m not alone. And for the record, the latest firmware updates do NOT fix the problem. Instead, they give you a bigger headache, and a bigger bill…yea sprint charged me $24 for updating my phone…and i have the unlimited data package.

my phone keeps freezing too when ever i try to open msn messenger it will restart its self and now i cant even click on the bubbles on the main screen idk its a nice phone i like it but i have only had it 2 days and on the first day it was freezing. but that’s why im going to go and take it back and get it replaced

This phone is awesome! Feature-wise probably the BEST phone I have ever owned. BUT, I have had 2 RANT’s that have froze at the loading screen for 5 minutes and then the screen goes black. The worst thing is that this all has happened within a week!!!!!

I received this phone as a gift on Friday 10/24/08. By Friday 10/31/08 I am up to my 4th Rant! Meaning I had to have my phone replaced FOUR TIMES!!! This phone has very nice features, the design is also nice however, there are serious problems with the software and it needs to be recalled! I am not the only person who has had this problem, I’ve read it on message boards. I heard it from the sprint store I returned it to. My original phone was purchased in the color Red from a 3rd Party Authorized Sprint Dealer in Brooklyn NY. I returned the phone there and was given a replacement in the color black. Then when that phone clunked out on me I returned it to an actual Sprint store in Manhattan and had to return it 2 more times. I’m crossing my fingers with the 4th one. Basically what happens is when I turn it off and charge it over night (mind you I take the plug out when it’s finished I never over charge) and turn it back on the phone will just say “Sprint Loading….” It never fully turns on so it’s not like it can be hard reset or anything. I called Samsung twice about the issue and they seem to be uninformative. The customer service reps have no knowledge of the problems people have been experiencing with the Rant in the past 2 weeks. I didn’t do anything to the phone to cause it to break, it’s just normal use and checking all the features out that seems to do it in. So I say all that to say DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE. WAIT A WHILE A LONG LONG WHILE UNTIL SAMSUNG RECALLS THIS PHONE OR AT LEAST ADMITS THAT THERE ARE SOME TECHNICAL ISSUES.
The people that have had to go through so much trouble with this phone should be compensated. It’s not worth it guys don’t waste your hard earned money especially in these tough economical times.
I havent had to replace mine yet I am doing so tomorrow though.. I have had my Rant for 3 weeks && it constantly freezes and then the screen will black out and come back saying Entering Sprint Service Area. Also it locks to the point where I have to remove the battery, not because I was surfing the internet, but because I was taking the keyguard off it froze! The internet browser is extremely slow, it is no where near my 2 year old Katana. In the past three weeks I have had to install software updates for the phone four times, that is absolutely ridiculous I am so disappointed with Samsung. i have the same problem. i cant go on the internet anymore either. if i knew that this phone wasnt going to be so good for internet and texting only i wouldnt have bought it…i love to text, so that is the best part of the phone. but i also love the internet….i was willing to compromise on the size of the screen, for the keyboard, which drew me in…but i dont think that the phone is the BEST yet…there is alot that has to be worked out ….
I have experienced the same problem. I had Sprint send me a new phone and immediately after I activated the new one, BOTH phones were freezing and going in and out of the black screen displaying Entering Sprint Service Area. They did this simultaneously! If you pressed any buttons on both phones, they would freeze at the same time. The screen would black out at the same time. I turned the old one off and sent it back the next day. A day later, my new Rant stopped freezing. I think there is an issue with the way the firmware talks to the Network. For both phones to do that simultaneously and then just stop, I can’t think of anything else that would cause it. BTW…I called the retention department and threw a fit. They are sending me a different phone (one of my choice) that is NOT a Rant. I wish Samsung and Sprint would fix this issue. I really liked the phone and its features.
How did you get ahold of the retention department, I just spent 2 hours on the phone with sprint, talked to about 8 people, and nobody would swap out for another phone, any ideas?
I am on my second Rant and about to return it today. I will NOT get another Rant. I am not hard on cell phones and usually keep one for 2 years. However both of my phones have had “locking” issues. I re-programed it for manual locking because I want to be the one telling it to lock and unlock, not automatically. The only problem is with this second phone, I sometimes can’t get it to unlock by pressing star and back buttons. Seems to happen randomly, but almost always after I have carried it in my purse or pocket (and I have placed the cover on it thinking it would protect the buttons better). Only way I can unlock it is to turn off/on again, or call it from a different phone. The first Rant I had had a locking issue too. It would not unlock when an incoming call came in.
I am going on my 3rd rant. I love the functionality of this phone, but everytime i try to get on the internet it turns off and then back on. I’m going with the Insticnt….
I have the same locking/keyguard issue… I found that if you hold the end button for a few seconds after pressing * and back, the phone will unlock.
I have the the same problem as MJ, and he or she is right about the end button, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t, however, I use the phone’s alarm to wake me up at a certain time and it ends up waking me up whenever the phones decides that is time for me to wake up, that is so anoying, I’m calling Sprint and see if I can get a replacement, I am going to order the same, It is a great phone except for the issues that is having right now. I think the problem is in the software that is running in this cellphone, and it needs to be debugged.
I have the same problem whether the alarms are turned on or off and whether they’re set for that time or not!I’ve taken it in 3 times to have it fixed and it still doesn’t work right!Also my screen freezes up too!I’ve just about had it.I love the whole keyboard thing for texting but I dont think it is worth all this trouble!It’s ridiculous!

use myxer.com for ringtones….and i love my rant…mine only “spazzes out” when i have like 3 people texting and calling me at the same time. i guess sometimes it’s too much action for the phone to keep up with.

I have had my Rant for over a week now, 1st couple of days it was freezing up on me during the loading of the phone..it happened for a min or two so I didn’t mind it. I also charged my phone so it had full battery, the next day after watching a decent quality sprint tv for less then 5 mins. and just txting all day, my battery life went to 1 bar by the end of the day then it went to red and kept beeping…Now I haven’t exchanged it yet since I heard you can only do 1 exchange, but here I am seeing reviews you can exchange more then once? What do u guys think I should do? Exchange it or get another phone? For sprint there aren’t alot of phones to choose from mind you, and I ported out of tmobile to get sprint since it had better reeption in my area. web browser sux, wouldnt load pages my 2 year old fusic could, i like the mail feature but hardly any web pages work and opera mini dont work on it back to the store and will continu to use my fusic until sprint gets some better phone options. Im only with sprint because im grandfathers in with sero $30 a month 4 pretty much unlimited everything if it wasnt for the cheapest plan out id be gone
I know what your saying. I too had problems with my rant. this is my second one and I couldn’t go on the web. or do much of anything this time. I do like the style and keyboard. I went back to my fusic it has never let me down. and I’ll just have to see what else I can do. all you guys who haven’t had problems; all I can say is “yet”. I hope I’m wrong but golly this has been a royal pain in the buttocks.
I am on my second Rant right now i am getting ready to go get my third. the salesman told me i was the first he sold it to, and first taht had it break… i dont think i believe this! and they never have them in stock so i drive 45 mins. to get a phone because the only phoneline i have is the one that isnt turning on… and they tell me i have to wait 3 days or so many hours to come back and get another one! bullshit i think!

This phone is nice…. I had tried the Instinct and just couldn’t get use to it plus it was to easy to scratch. So i took that back and got this on in red and i love it! Did have problems with it calling people but i press and hold back and it locks.
I love the Rant. Was very suprised to hear that the phone was freezing on other people. I have had mine about 2 months and use it ALOT and never had a problem. Maybe I got lucky? Would highly recommend the phone to others.

Sorry to say that upgrading firmware does not work. I’m on my second Rant in three months and I have to say I am pretty disappointed.
What needs to be done is Samsung needs to more thoroughly QA their phones and all aspects of of the software’s functionality before it releases a phone.
These phones should be recalled so people can get their money back, or get a replacement. If I didn’t have the Sprint upgrade program, I would certainly NOT have spent MSRP for this phone.
I have been having issues with Sprint’s “Customer Service” since they merged with Nextel, and I’ve had the Rant since Feb. I’m on my second one, and I’ve updated the firmware on both phones at least once. Does this sound like a reasonable thing to do with a new phone?
I have had all of the problems everyone else is talking about above, with BOTH phones. The worst thing that happens with mine is that it sometimes doesn’t let me answer a phone call. I have to wait for the call to stop, then try to call the person back. When you’re waiting to hear from an agency for an office job in this economy, you don’t want to miss a call because that can potentially be a missed job.

I have had this phone since the 21st of december. I went to my dads office and spilled a little water onit but it was fine. It started freezing on me 6 weeks after the water incident. it freezes at the lock screen and i can’t unlock it. I have to take out the battery and turn it back on. My friend that has this phone had a problem too. Her screen went white and it like freaked out. I think 1 day later, it was back to normal. It seems like most of these have freezing problems and some others have screen problems. The rest are lucky and don’t have any problems. Lucky them…if u like phones freezing on you, then i suggest this one. I do not think it was the water that caused it to freeze. I haven’t traded it in yet because of the water incident. I thought that that might be it but obviously not. Samsung Rant users are NOT making this up. That is crazy. If yours doesnt have problems, just wait and it will. If it doesn’t, lucky you…

Well I really liked this phone when I first got it a couple weeks ago. That was until today when my screen all of a sudden went blank…never to return again. I’ve taken the battery out and turned it off all that stuff but still nothing.
I’m going to return it because luckily I’m still in my 30 days and part of me wants to purchase it again. A small part of me wonders what would have happened if I was outside my 30 day return and i didn’t have insurance.
It really is a neat phone especially for someone who does more texting than talking. Hopefully, if I do get another one I won’t have the same issue.

All the people that keeps saying its freezing on them have you tried getting a high capacity micro sd?

A new version of Rant IM application has been released, I believe this is to resolve freeze issues. If you are logged into IM you have to log out and back in to get the upgrade (2.1.54A).
my wife had 2 rants in three weeks…same problem…plugged them into the charger and they never worked again. anyone heard of a fix for this? She loves the phone and the apps, but this problem is a pain. she is on her third now and has had it for two days…she is afraid to plug it in. I think i will stick with my rumor for now…at shuts itself off every once in a while, but is a good phone.
I haven’t had the freezing problem, but has anyone had issues with the alarm? It will go off art random times. At first I thought I was just hitting snooze or something and it was going off 5 min later, but today it went off at 8:05 a.m. and all of my alarms were set for after that. I left all of my alarms on and didn’t dismiss the 8:05 one from missed alerts so I have some sort of proof that it’s really doing this. EVERYDAY. Then in the last couple days I realized I can’t take pictures either. I went through all of the settings and everything. It makes the noise and freezes the pic like it is going to save, but then just disappears. WHO KNOWS!! Anyone else having problems like this?!?

Morgan, I’ve had it for about a month and a half now, but the problems started about a week after I got it. Just yesterday the camera randomly started to work, but the alarms are still all over the place. The phone is starting to go a lot slower too.
yeah actually my girlfriend and i both got one and both are alarms go off at previously set times that we have had are alarms at but even if its off and i want to sleep in it still goes off, she personally doesn’t care and will sleep right through it, but I’m the type thats up for good, but your not going crazy it really keeps happing and i can only think of one or two times my phone has froze, so i don’t know. one thing you can do though reset all your alarms don’t just turn them off, and if you really need to just sleep i know it sucks but turn the volume down to silence all. take care, dean from washington
The reseting doesn’t work.The sprint lady told me to do this to no avail then she accused of not knowing how to work my phone.
I thought it was just me! But the alarm is really whacked. Some days it works, but some days it doesn’t even go off – even though it shows a missed alert. I woke up a few minutes before the alarm one morning and watched the phone. The light came on, but no vibration, no sound. How is that supposed to wake me up. I hit “dismiss” which usually disables the alarm, but the light came on again in 5 minutes, like I hit snooze. I can NOT rely on this phone to wake me. Otherwise, I have had no problems.
I’ve had this same problem. My phone just went off at 1:30 AM when it had been set to go off at 4:40 PM and was set. Sometimes I wish it would mess up when I really need to wake up…
I have had trouble with the alarm as well. At first I thought I was just forgetting to set it for the right time but this week I have my proof. Last week I set it for 7:50am and this week 6:50 am. It wake me up at 6:50, but it also goes off at 7:50. The software is not clearing out the old alarm unless you manually reset all alarms. Go ahead and test this on your phone and see if it works for you. It’s annoying because next week I won’t need to wake up until 7:50 but it’s going to be going off at 6:50.

I know this was posted a while ago but seriously I have the same problems with the alarm. I wasn’t sure what was going on but just a few minutes ago I saw my phone light up and try to get on the internet.. (for updating I assume). When I turned off my phone and turned it back on, my three alarms were messed up. The first one, that was ON originally, was now set to OFF. And the second two that were set to OFF were not set to ON! This explains why I would go to bed with my alarms set and wake up and see that they were turned off. Because of this problem, I woke up at 11:15 on a day that I had a midterm at 11:30! The alarm turned itself off in the middle of the night! I barely use this phone for anything. I don’t use internet and I barely ever even use the keyboard to text. But HONESTLY, I need an alarm that doesn’t shut itself off!! Sorry for complaining, just needed to get it out.
For starters who makes a camera without a flash? Honestly.. and yeah I’ve had trouble with the alarm alot, been late to work twice.
Whoa, reading these comments, I’m scared to get this phone! I asked for it for Christmas, but now I’m having second thoughts. My Fusic never had any problems and I’ve had it for about two years. Ugh I hope I’m one of those lucky ones that never see a problem.
okayy so i just got the rant like 3 days ago. it really is a nice phone and all but for the past 2 days or so its been really diffiult. it randomly freezes up and then vibrates for no reason. when someone calls it dosnt show the caller theres just a little telephone on the uper status bar and it rings… dose anyone know how to fix this? its been asking me for some software update and just finally did it. i hope it works. i wouldnt recomend getting this phone but some people get lucky. like my sister she has the same exact one and she got it the same day as me and she hasnt had any problems so you never know but…idk

oh yes and if anyone is having problems downloading ringers to your phone from like myxertones.com and stuff….all you have to do is go to tools,update phone. then update firmware. and go through the process. then when your getting the ringer on your phone it tells you that they couldnt find the right software in your phone or something and you go to the scroll down menu and change the mp3 option and aac and try to downloadi it. it should work
This helped me out a lot! I followed the steps & it worked! Contacting Sprint did no good.

I just got this phone for my bday. So far I like it. I love the keyboard for texting. I am a bit scared however. I have been reading up on the freezing problems and so far have not experienced anything. I sure hope it doesn’t happen. I do have a question however. I put in my memory card from my old phone and can now listed to my music BUT… I can’t use any of them for a ringtone. Can anyone help me. I don’t want to download again if I don’t have to.

ok so I asked for a phone for christmas and its gonna be my first one. I really like this phone cause ive read all the reviews from like 40 sites. take it from a very unhappy RUMOR owner when the screen isnt turnin white and the phone isnt randomly turnin off it most likely will stop charging that was my expierience n i hav tlk to a close friend who works 4 sprint and has told me 2 not look at the rumor at least til mid next yr when they finally fix the problems thats plaguing about 50% of the customers and said so far Rant is doing gud and to try this im not going to lie 2 invest $300 in the LG Rumor after my expierience will never happen 4 me i didnt mind really any of the problems cuz it mite take aay 5 mins a day from me using the phone the charger port problem was what did it 4 me esp when i took the phone to sprint and they told me i wusn’t using the clip on the charger to take it out right and mind you there is no clip 2 use lol but im trying the rant this will most likely be my last phone with sprint next 2010 march when my contract is up i will be moving on 2 a service with more variety and better prices lol.

im glad someone else is actually having the same issues!! when you say update do you mean go into a sprint store and have them do it?? cause just in the last couple days actually the camera randomly started to work…alarm is still so screwed up tho! thanks!

No i mean like goin to tools then update phone and then firmware and it should help although the phone still sucks it will help for about two weeks and then it goes down hill again…. i have just decided to wait until my contract is up then switch carriers i do not like any of the phones except for the smartphones and they cost to much per month… i think anyways everytime i call to ask i get a different answer about the question i hate the phone …but i must say it is better than the lg rumor…(which i had three of within 5 months) let me know if this helps…. mine wont let me delete pics and it always freezes so much and it hangs upp on ppl…. we actually had a prob with it not ringing and i got in trouble for that one cause i never answered and then we finally figured that one out and had to send it in … one more question does yours go into safe mode and not let you do anything mine does … and it will go into emergency download mode and you cannot do anything had to get a new one and then it finally started working so then i had to send the newer one back…. and the paint is coming off the menu/ok button so yea i have just had straight up horrible luck with this phone hope someone has better luck with it

ok i have the rant and it is the best phone in the world i have never had a problem never froze it works like it should and some ppl are lying or they miss treated the phone and if anyone has problems then get a new phone instead of complaining
Some people are lucky I suppose to have no problems. But I doubt so many people are mistreating their phones. And many of them have gotten another phone since their last one keeps freezing. I’m not saying the Rant is a bad phone, I’m just saying it might not be all the owners fault.
I am having so many problems with this phone and I take VERY good care of mine. Not a nick or a scratch. It’s never been dropped. All of the issues I have are certainly phone related. My screen doesn’t always flip, the top icons end up going across the top and the side. It freezes, I will get a text and my ringtone will get stuck and continue to play over and over. Twice it’s been stuck on a constant vibrate for well over a minute. And now, every time I try to use my IM application, it resets, goes to a black screen, beeps, vibrates, and then says it is entering the Sprint service area. This is the second Rant I have had. The first I had a whole two weeks and I got the black screen of death and had to have it replaced. So it is certainly not the user in all cases and we are not all lying. I am not hard on my things at all. Heck, I could probably have an ipod for 10 years and make it last. My last phone hit the 2 year contract mark with my old service and it still looked and ran like a brand new phone.. and it was free!
Ashly is your phone still doing that IM entering sprint service area thing? Mine does it with the web browser, im getting it serviced today its so annoying.

i loved my rant when i 1st got it…i did have trouble with the ringtone playing over & over cause it freezed. and the screan took a 2nd to flip. but i really had no other probs. its a great phone. but i admit it needs a lil more work.
I have had the Rant for a couple weeks now, Zero problems. i dont use the web( i am on the web all day since i work at an ISP) or for e-mail. i have downloaded ringers with no problems. i have not had any of the alarm or freezing or …well anything. for 50 bucks *after waiting 12-14 weeks for rebate it is a great deal. i never thought i could like a phone this much. i upgraded from the old nextel i580(old faithful) and was kind of hesitant since the 580 had been so reliable but i am happy i did upgrade. i would recommend this phone if someone asked me.
J, where did u download the ringers? was it free? or did sprint make u pay? i have the unlimited texting plan if that helps. thx!
