After using the iPhone for a little over a year, I find that the onscreen keyboard is intuitive and useful. The same can’t be said for many keyboards I’ve tried although I’ll admit a nice little Blackberry Curve keyboard would be a nice addition if it could be unobtrusive. Oh well. Pipe dreams.

I agree. As a current iPhone user I find that the current keyboard works great actually. Plus I think the addition of a third party keyboard takes away from the phones sleek style and would make the device cumbersome. Just my two cents.
I’ve had a first-gen iPhone since the word go and the one thing that will make me switch is the keyboard. I HATE the virtual keyboard. I’ve recently used a Nokia E71 and BlackBerry Bold and am all but ready to switch - these devices are much less fun to use but the keyboards make SMS/IM/Email so much easier than they are on iPhone.

The video is from Japan, and after visiting several times, I have seen they have the time, money and drive to modify the world around them to be better, and better. They upgrade their wetware too!
That’s the kind of thing I’ve been waiting for. I’d love a keyboard that acted as a screen cover. It would have to be thinner than that hack is, but I think it must be possible. Hopefully someone is working on it. I don’t mind the softkeyboard too much, but I do make quite a few mistakes that have to be corrected.
Of course, this is totally useless unless the next rev of the OS allows portrait email.
I type at least 45 wpm on my iphone keyboard, i fail to see how that keyboard could improve on that.

As a multilingual person who needs to send e-mail in French and Chinese, the virtual keyboard of the iPhone is pure genius. You get at the tip of your fingers the different accented vowels used in
French (or any other languages using special accented characters) a lot faster than when I do it on my laptop. I can also enter Chinese (traditional) scrips using the handwriting recognition keyboard. It works very well and is a big attraction to the Chinese population. There is no way a physical keyboard can match the flexibility of a virtual touch keyboard. Period.
I like it, actually. It looks like it’s a kbd that just attaches to your iPhone, so it should be possible to only use it when you need it. If the on-screen kbd works for you, good for you. If you prefer “real” keys, this is a godsend.
You’re right, adding an external keyboard will make the iphone bulkier, but think of the possibilities. Sure, a text message is fine with the osk, but with an external keyboard, writing/ editing documents on the go is possible. Even writing a simple email would be 10x easier. Ask anyone who has had to write a dense email on the phone; it sucks.

The only think I miss on the bold is that farting application. Other than that the bold is everything i need in a mobile.

The iphone keyboard is great.
I feel me comfortable with it. And you always can use 3rd party apps to make the text edition even faster. I am using fastmail app for email edition and with this app + iphone keyboard tips the text edition is really fast.
