There’s an interesting comparison here between Bethesda’s two major works of this generation, Oblivion and Fallout 3. In the end, it seems Oblivion “won,” although the reasoning is pretty flimsy. Now, I think the idea of a comparison in the first place is flawed, since it stands to reason that for two things to be compared, they must first be different in some way. And the only difference I have found after extensive play of both is that, well, Fallout 3 has guns.
Yes, yes, there are some other little differences in the way things work, but really both games are just the same thing painted different colors. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; the formula works, it just won’t do to call it anything other than what it is.

i think oblivion was pure gold i liked it better. But i still love fallout 3
i liked fallout 3 better than oblivion for the most part except the repair system was really really really shit, and i never wanted to use my awesome armour, which inevitably left me playing oblivion and assasin’s creed!!!
I’ve played both games to their fullest (I’ve serious unlocked every acheivment on both, and at least on Fallout i’ve done EVERYTHING you can do.) and I have to say, Oblivion tops Fallout in a lot of ways, Fallout beats Oblivion in a few areas, but Oblivion clearly dominates. Not only is it massive, much larger than Fallout, it’s also far longer, and much more engaging. There is no end to Oblivion, theres always a new dungeon to raid, a cabin with a quest inside, some bandits needing killing, there is no end to the massive world of Cyrodil, and thats what I love. Not only that, but the scenery is just amazing, lush forests, rocky caves, snowy moutains, beautiful beaches, uncountable amounts of enemys from crabs to vampires, it’s just a beautiful and engaging landscamp where as fallout is the same dreary wasteland (don’t get me wrong, I love the landscapes on Fallout, but its just so much of the same over and over.) I think Bethesda focused to much on quests = acheivments in fallout, and therefore limiting the game to a small amount of them. Oblivion has so many quests, I doubt I have even completed half. Not only that, but Oblivion has guilds, factions, it’s just got so much more gameplay than Fallout there isn’t really much of an arguement that you will enjoy Oblivion far more, because you can enjoy it far longer. Aside from that, gameplay in Oblivion i’ve found is much easier than Fallout. In Fallout, unless you use vats or some type of weapon with a large area of damage, you miss A LOT, making it difficult not to use vats every other shot (it got boring, constantly using vats over and over, I wanna just kill some damn people ffs.) this is due to the enemys in Fallout constantly moving around, making it hard to shoot from a far away range. In Oblivion, even using range, it’s far easier, and you have a LOT more chances to use melee as a main source of fighting, where as in Fallout you’d get mauled to death by a deathclaw in three hits. The beautiful citys in Oblivion are awe inspiring, where as in Fallout the largest city consists of a few halls and a big room with a few rag tag shops, there is just no conparison in that category. The BIG let down, is that other than the small little pit in The Pit dlc, there was no arena! And that was one of my favorite things in Oblivion by far, so that was a big bummer in my book. Titles also made Oblivion more fun, in Fallout you get a name based on your Karma, but other than that nothing. I love running around hearing people go “Theres the grand champion!”, it just added to the affect of the game. One thing Fallout does excell in is the Radio Station! Even though you can hear people talk about you in Oblivion, and in Conversation they’ll mention your acheivments, there is nothing like hearing Three Dog rant about your adventures on the radio, that I love. Overall, Fallout was one of the best games i’ve ever played, but it’ll never live up to the godly Oblivion, in my book anyway.
Couldn’t have saud it better myself. Oblivion is definitely the better of the two.
i felt the same exact way. and i for some reason loved oblivion cause it applied to real life cause you actually have real cities and 10000000000 more charcters
i agree soo much, but oblivion did suck in the way that everything levels up with u there should be hard areas in oblivion like; Chaydinghal (or watever) and the surrounding area is very hard like u should be about lvl 25 to do well there and leweyign about lvl 5 and the capital city is just mixxed with quests going in diff directions,
they are both good
Oblivion and Fallout 3 are the two greatest games I have ever played…and I’ve played quite a few games. However, Oblivion manages to top Fallout 3 by a thin, thin margin
(Oblivion–10/10 to Fallout 3–9.9/10).
After playing Fallout 3 for about 6 hours, I CONSTANTLY feel like I should be pulling out an Akaviri Katana instead of an energy pistol. The whole thing feels like I should be playing Oblivion, yet there’s no change to the landscape – no gradiation from lush green to frozen mountains – just wasteland. The story isnt as interesting, the characters arent as engaging, and I just keep feeling like there’s something missing. Oh, and the perception radar that shows nearby enemies as red blips? Will NEVER replace the dynamic music changes in Oblivion.
Built on a solid foundation (oblivion + skins + guns) and obviously technically improved over 2005’s mindblowing rpg (mainly in the character models and range of voice acting) but it just doesnt have the heart to keep me interested. Or the nice scenery.
get a chinease officer sword, makes it fell like good ole oblivion :)
true the officer sword makes it like oblivion. but when ur getting shot at not much u can do. ive played both and they both are great. but oblivion just had a lot more to offer.
oblivion is one of my favorite games ever. Fallout 3 and oblivion are very similar the main differece i feel is in fallout your chooses make the game change dramatly in oblivion you really dont make huge decisions you can be evil and join the dark brotherhood and you can be in the mages guild and fighters guild. In fallout in the very begining you get to decide the fate of megaton. in fallout once you finish you cant free roam anymore. You have to return to the load screen some people might not mind this, but i though it was a little annyoing. on the positive note i loved VATS stoping battle and aiming my shotty at a enemy raider and blowing his head to bits was very satisfying. overall i loved both games Very similar but had some differences
Not to worry man, Broken Steel coming out soon will allow the player to continue the main quest plus it will add new stuff.
Honestly just save before you do the last mission and then continue playing said character and also just wait for Broken steel cause it extends the level cap also you can continue playing your recently deseased character BTW you guys are complaining Ooh i feel like i should pull out a sword instead of a pistol ok then just stop playing and freakin play repetitive Oblivion
i likrd fallotu 3 more because of vats, i like blud :)
ive only played oblivion but from what ive heard, it is the better game
Honestly some of you guy’s cant type for shit and some of your word’s are so misspelled i almost laught my ass off lolz seriously though either you guy’s really cant type or your just to lazy to type correctly
Wow. You can’t spell for shit either. Learn what an apostrophe is for too, dumbass. Laught? Guy’s? God damn boy, you must be a retard!
Loved both games, Fallout had the better combat system, especially with VATS, but i found the barren wasteland to be really depressing after a while of playing. And so many of my sessions got cut a bit short just because i didn’t have the heart to go on any further. Apart from that though good game.
personally, i like fallout 3, but as someone mentioned, once u finish the game, u cannot free roam which in my book is a big no no!. However, I do love the vats mode in fallout 3. One other thing that doesn’t seem to appeal to me is the depressing wasteland you have to go through, it’s all so plain and greyish brownish. Overall, fallout 3 is a great game, albiet I choose oblivion over any game any time.
naw man its fun but people need to get the depression feeling out of there head cuz its not effecting u its effecting everything else, besides oasis is different from the wasteland and the dlc’s yeah oblivion has no blood/ gore which personally i dont agree with cuz i love blood and guts ect. and FALLOUT 3 gave me that fun but in Oblivion which i think is very fun has no blood and gore but on the back says BLOOD and GORE but theers only blood but overall i love both games but i much prefer Fallout waiting for the dlc’s to come out for ps3 email me when somebody knows the release date
The why i see it is that some times when you are playing oblivion and you come out of a dark cave and you see the sun and the scenery is great thats what inspires me to keep playing oblivion, now fallout is lame when you have to walk for a long time in the wasteland it all just looks the same both games are great it is a hard choice but i would chose oblivion even though i have been playing fallout alot.
Yo it’s called the wasteland for a reason kid it’s not going to be all sunny and have fucked up flowers everywhere just play oblivion then stop saying the wasteland is ugly because in its own way its very beautiful oblivion just gave people headaches because of the ugly ass NPCs and way too much Flowers also for the person that said i didnt like fallout because of the lack of towns Its in a post apocalyptic wasteland man the utterly destroyed Captitol wasteland isnt going to be sprawling with life and filled to the brim with towns Oblivion is in a diffrent time period and a really diffrent form of Fantacsy RPG video game
I feel like Oblivion was just bigger. I enthralled me for many many many hours, while Fallout 3 was over pretty quickly. There were more quests in Oblivion and 4 guilds to join.
Fallout is great but limited. The map was to small and the scenery wasnt as good as oblivion. Fallout was a very fun game and one that should not be missed no matter what, but lets face it oblivion was the best game ever made it was like entering another world when you played I would play for hours and hours and not get bored
well i never played fallout 3 but i think oblivion is better beacuse the game is full of fun quest and you get spells u can also make your own spells plus the places are fun to practice and help get u level ups
I like oblivion more, it was bigger. I like Fallout 3 but it was SO depressing the wastleland never changed, and it looks like a giant nuclear war could happen any time. Oblivion on the other had more quests, character selection, and scenery. Both great games V.AT.S. was a great idea and I can’t get enogh of the Rock-it-Launcher.
i never played oblivion but i could rate fallout 3 at 9.5%
You fail miserably at math.
i think he meant 9.5/10 not 9.5/100… but he sai percent which means /100 just a lil mistake no ned to be rude :P
Both games rock. But i like the fact i can blow shit up in fallout 3 so it pwns oblivion. You say the scenery is dull? Well wait until you cover that scenery with a giant mutants guts MWAHAHAHHAHAA>
VOTE FREE THE NIGGERS
wat should i do i have oblivion with every thing owned and killed every 1 should i buy fall out 3 or kill zone 2
i really want kill zone 2… i liked fallout 3 better than oblivion for the most part except the repair system was really really really shit, and i never wanted to use my awesome armour, so i would go killzone 2
hmmm….lets compare two of bethesda’s greatest games and see who win some people like midevil games and some people like futuristic games so learn to deal with it FAGS!!!
fuck you
im kinda seeing what people prefer and it seems to be oblivion for i like both futuristic and medieval and i prefer oblivion and it not just that that’s different.
i think fallout 3 would be better if it had more quests and u could carry on after the end
I havent played oblivion but i have seen the trailer online and i think the graphics suck. i ordered the game and it should be here this week so i can see how it is but the graphics in fallout are way better. but other then that i cant really be a judge cuz i havent played oblivion
You’re a fucktard I watched those trailers when I was thinking about getting oblivion before I got it. The graphics were the exact same but oblivion has way more color so the graphics look better.
well dont forget fallout was made nearly 3-4 years after oblivion so yea of course there is gonna be better graphics. but the actual game play and amount of things to do in oblivion is alot better
imo the story of fallout 3 has more depth and somewhat satirical in parts which is really engaging. characters in fallout 3 has more personalities too. and i absolutely love the radio even though they always play the same thing, it adds a lot of realism. funny to think how u can be exploring dangerous ruins with gun in hand while casually listening the junks they play on the radio =P
however i’ll have to admit the wasteland does become weary and hard on the nerves after a while, which is both a plus (adds even more realism) AND a minus. oblivion is overall more entertaining, with more locations to explore and quests do.
so…what can i say? i love both!!!!
After playing through both games i was faced with what is better. These 2 games are definatly my best 1 and 2 games of all time. i think the battle system for fallout was better with the VAT etc but then i think it was not as balanced due to the fact i could have a chinese pistol or a baseball bat and i am facing a minigun. In Oblivion it is not good the way i could go and kill somthing 10 levels higher wirth out losing any health. I think the scenary in oblivion is alot better and less depressing but the constant oblivion gates nearly made me cry. The better choice of weapons in FO3 is better and i like the wy you can make guns. In oblivion there is magic and magic items which i think make the game alot better and just push it ahed of FO3, if you have to get and get them both :P
I personally LOVED both games. i played oblivion for a total of 65 hours and fallout 3 for i think 30 hours. they are both very amazing games with great stories and graphics. though, i think that oblivion made me feel better when i played it, yes my mood, because of the landscape. and fallout 3 was pretty depressing after like 3 hours. the combat in fallout 3, though, was sorta better than in oblivion. but oblivion’s hack and slash and creativity and the ability to go hunting for animals was pretty great. oblivion had more quests though but fallout’s story was amazingly captive, eventhough the ending sucked.
i think that fallout 3 is better.it is more realistic and it has guns and map isn t small it has a lot places to discover.the ending is going ti change with broken steel.
what makes me mad about FO3 is that its too hard to find wepons…i started yesterday and have 11 hours so far…i have yet to find an energy weapon better then the laser pistol…
you all are retared to compare these games. haha just kidding but for real oblivion isnt even a game to me. ive put like god knows how many hours into oblivion. i havent put more than 30 into fallout. i honestly did not care for VATS AT ALL!!!!! it was so dumb cuz its unrealistic. can you do that in real life? im the kinda person who always turns off ingame music cuz if you were really a nord with an ebony longsword in search of madness ore in a ruin would you be listening to good music in the background to keep you pumped? idk. also. i feel stupid saying this cuz some of my other favouite games are hard as shit but fallout 3 for about the first 3 hours was almost effffing impossible. you always had to run! i guess thats just me… but oblivion i could play litterally for 20 hours straight. i always end up playing fallout for about an hour then say eff this and stick oblivion in.. lol. but on a scale from one to 10 oblivion is 10 and fallout is 9.5….
Haha, you dumbass. Sure, you can’t do VATS in real life. Can you cast a fireball in real life? Are there actually Oblivion gates that open up, pouring demons out, in real life? Maybe the game wasn’t for you, but saying that it’s dumb because it’s unrealistic is… retarded. Especially when you’re looking at it in the light of a very unrealistic game.
Oh, and yeah, you actually can do VATS in real life. Just aim for a specific body part. Duh.
that was just retarded… and oblivion is more realistic then fallout 3
fallout 3 is based in the real world but history was altered in like 1950, so the game is trying to be realistic in the way it could of happened if history was altered.
Oblivion is fantasy, i think he means that he likes the game to follow the lore of it so he feels like its happening so he can get mor einvolved with the game and enjoy it more.
me and this fag alex pennington have been arguing over this for months. i say oblivion he says fallshit3. thank you all for agreeing with me i just read all your posts to him.
oblivion rocks im lvl 99 in every skill and i i’ve pwned every thing and on fallout im lvl 20 i ve got every gun thats not a mod but dont have intenet for updates and i want to buy oblivion but shops dont sell it any more what the fuck is that about and fallout 3 cost me $149 buck wtf
$149 bucks for fallout 3??? You can get oblivion at game stop or EB games. Im not sure about new but my copy used was somewherearound 25 bucks I think. Just check your disk and get a good one thats not scratched its really a great game.
And to give my view of the BIG DEBATE: I personaly prefer fallout 3 because of its weapons combat system and difficulty. Many people just say its bad because of the dreary landscape but that is what it’s for. It really gives the feel of what your character is feeling. Think about it if you were running around DC after the end and saw that you would be derpressed too. Also fallouts characters have more personality in oblivion the characters dont say a thing.
and wtf is vats is about its so unrealistic and [pauuse right when a behemouth is coming down on you its like wait wait let me heal myself so i can own you
fallout 3’s my fav it’s more fun by far, i love the v.a.t.s system
Gameplay wise, both were great. Awesome quests which presented different things to do.
Environments in Oblivion were much more diverse and lush, and overall allowed me to play the game longer, a definite plus.
BUT Fallout 3 was much more atmospheric. Walking around metro tunnels from an hour while only encountering hissing ghouls will give ya the hebegebes and make you take a break
Both these game sucks – Phantasy Star II is the greatest game ever made. Rolf would kill all you fags while he was fucking your sisters!
everyone who likes fallout 3 are fags! the senery sucks in fallfag 3 and travelling is so boreing its better to just steal a horse you can also be a theif and steal anything you want or an assasin or an archer or a warrior or a mage and many other classes!so any of those fags who like fallout 3 can drink my poison peinus piss
After playing both extensively, I have to say Fallout 3 wins. I just can’t see how everyone thinks the storyline is so bad, I think it’s better because it’s not the cliche *SPOILER* “be the hero of our land” that is Oblivion, but it’s basically “WTF dad, why’d you leave me”, which I think is a fresh and unique idea that happens to work well. We all know that Oblivion’s scenery is way better than Fallout’s, but that is shallow IMO. Sure, after a couple hours it’s hard to move on with the same depressing scenery, but that’s the whole point of it anyways. I think it’s much easier to feel sorry or feel that the characters have problems in Fallout, because in Fallout your dad left you and you are living post-apocolypse. For Oblivion, it’s hard to see that Cheydinhal has a problem with it’s guards when they are living in mansions and surrounded by pretty flowers.
i like the deusch who said fo3 was bad because vats was unrealistic cuz u cant do that in real life.lol. chill with the dnd man NEWS FLASH u cant cast a Major Heal spell in real life… dumbass… i like both but TES4 takes the cake… just preference ps fable is ok but once again way to short
oblivion=better game& longest game
fallout=good but no multyplayer]
better take oblivion its awsome dont take fallout short and notgood and stupid ending
I’ve played both and loved both.
BUT i have to say fallout 3 is better. the controls are better, i use VATS 50% of the time which is fun so you get both modes of fighting.
both stories are great, but in fallout…your dad is frickin’ liam neeson! oh and the president is frickin’ malcolm mcdowell!
oblivion had cool factions to join (thieves, fighting, mages, dark brotherhood) and fallout 3 doesn’t, however it does have REAL companions not just “mage apprentice”, each with their own personalities, and a dog that you can give orders to (take that skinned hound!)
So far, shivering isles beats all other dlc for both games, but im sure fallout will get one comparable to it. however the fallout dlc is better than the most of the oblivion dlcs which were just new houses basically (still awesome quests though)
oblivion had a more diverse range of scenery and weather (what happened to the rain fallout? it would be cool if it was radioactive rain even…just SOME). fallout had just the wasteland…duh why would it have grass and nice flowers after nuclear war? and dont say the fallout wouldve ended by now…even if it would…the other games are waaay after the war as well
they both have some cool/weird quests. for oblivion: a nightmare darkly (forgot the name, the one where youre in the nightmare), the one in the painting. and for fallout: tranquility lane, not really a quest but inside vault 106 (the halleucinations). however oblivion had some weird but great easter eggs like the giant objects in some areas, the upside down room, and stuff.
fallout, not so much
while i believ fallout’s story is better, oblivions story is longer which is cool, but broken steel continues the story which makes it feel longer
as for loot, tossup…theyre way to different to compare. for instance in oblivion i mainly used my trusty shortsword (later duskfang/dawnfang) and a shield (the enchanted chorrol one) and some enchanted bow while wearing the gray fox hood/imperial legion armor…for fallout i used my trusty terrible shotgun (the awesome combat shotgun found at evergreen mills) (later a3-21’s plasma rifle) while wearing tribal power armor (now tesla power armor cause it looks AWESOME)
playing both…theyre both pretty much a 9.5
I am a huge oblivion fan but…. Fallout 3 is better in terms of replayability, character interation, story modifications by the player, better graphics (obviously) , item mod, housing..
Oblivion was a masterpiece, but Fallout its the evolution, the next elder scrolls will be upgraded on the new fallout standards .
Its like compare fifa 09 to fifa 010 , obviously the last is better.
they are better in different ways it depends on what the single person likes and prefers, u can’t just say one is better than the other. what you can do is discuss wat did wat better and hopefully the’ll take it into account in Elder Scrolls 5
Fallout 3 was a disapointment
Compared to the Previous fallout games.
They were great
Same with Oblivion
Morrowind was better
Daggerfall owned both
But for these 2 specifically I would have to go with Oblivion, Simply because it was Bethesda’s own thing, not taken from Black Isle studios like they did Fallout 3. Also, Fallout 3 is NOT an Rpg, Bethesda turned it into another crappy FPS for todays Fat spoiled ADD children.
but you cant compare two things that are different, you should always compare two things that are similar. otherwise you would have said that you cant compare them because its like comparing apples and oranges… with these two games you can compare graphical, story, weapons, style, and over all differences…
I LOVE Fallout 3 but I am going to sell it soon (to get the GOTY instead of spending £7.99 for every DLC). But I loved Oblivion, I thought I could live there it was an amazing experience. Although the voice syncing in Oblivion was pretty good. But I have to say. If you an RPG with guns without a second of doubt get Fallout 3 (GOTY if you can) but if you want a medieval type of RPG I would get Oblivion on PC instead of on a console BUT World of Warcraft is much better but its £9 a month! But there 100’s (probably nearly a thousand) different quests, there are probably 1000000 people online too! And there are 2 expansions with a third coming soon which raises the lvl cap to 85 but with all RPG’s it only gets fun when you are a high lvl.
i have played both games, and i have to say that both oblivion and fallout 3 are my two favorite 360 games. as for which is better than the other, i cannot pick. oblivion is much larger, but the loading screens take FOREVER (at least mine do), whereas fallout 3 has tons of action and sure its smaller, but there are more and more downloads to the game added every so often, making it larger. i have played all the newer downloads except for mothership zeta and so far they have proved to be worthwhile.
Fallout 3’s ballin bitch! Oblivion sucks the cock though!
I like both games but Fallout is better because its a more grown up setting where everything is difficult but after playin oblivion for as long as I hav and getting every achievement it just doesnt interest me it looks to childish and the combat just gets ridiculously easy just get 100 destruction and u can just make spells that rape everything with barely effort from you.
While in Fallout getting surronded by Albino Radscorpions is very challenging and fun to get out of. For me it’s a close call but Fallout has more fun things to do with all the DLC that has come out which there is none for Oblivion and you can cheat in Oblivion which just takes all the fun out of being a merchant or a thief In my books its FALLOUT 3 10/10 and for OBLIVION 7.5/10
And i am looking forward to The New Elders Scrolls game in 2010
And if you think ny comment is like a essay im in the middle of exams groan!
FALLOUT 3 FTW
fallout3 way better explore every were coution lots of gore.
I am currently playing both games. Oblivion is better in my opinion, although I haven’t put enough time into FO3 to love it yet. Oblivion just has the power to make me want to go back to it time and time again. This time I have the game of the year edition of both.
