You know the upcoming New Xbox Experience that has so many people excited for some reason? Turns out that Microsoft call centers are bracing themselves for NXE-induced red rings of death. So while you’re gaining a [fancy?] new user interface you may also be losing an Xbox 360. Fun!
It’s like this: Microsoft is afraid that its Frankenstein of a machine may have trouble “taking,” in a sense, the NXE update. The result of such a rejection could be (emphasis on the “could” as none of this is guaranteed to happen) mass RRODs. And when the system breaks down…
It gets better. You remember the extended warranty that Microsoft offered early last year in order to remedy the original RROD situation? It’s set to expire a few days before the NXE launches—meaning that if the NXE causes a RROD you’re SOL.
Please keep in mind that that is all speculation—there’s no reason to suspect that the NXE will cause mass RRODs. If it does, however, then we’re all in for a treat in the next few weeks.
If I get another RROD—I’ve already had one, last year—then that’s it for me, I’ll quit gaming.

I wouldn’t quit gaming. PC’s are more expensive but a viable means of playing tons of great games and you can even use the 360 controller. The PS3 isn’t exactly amazing but at least it’s hardware hasn’t had massive failures. I won’t bring the Wii in as much as I love it I’ve shelved the poor thing in wait for something that really looks like a must own.
I’ve already had 3 RROD’s and experienced some of the worst customer support in trying to get those resolved. If I get one more I’ll swear off ever buying a MS Console again.
That’s why I am not getting a xbox until they get rip of the red ring. Heck, while I am waiting, I might just as well wait for a new model with reduced noise. that thing is loud!
you guys are babies.. gaming today on cosoles is where its at because of xbox live. the ps3 network is trash. If you do have a RROD, head to costco and take advantage of their awesome return policy while your box is being fix. Ta fawking Da!
I’d love to get on XBOX live, but after the NXE update, I now have no video. I’m glad I bought my PS3, the network is FREE, and works just fine.
Yeah you would love to see that happen wouldn’t you Nicky… I would love to see your face when it doesn’t happen….
Um,
Why even cause a stir with sutch an article?? The RROD is a system failure situation, the NXE is an operating system updated so to speak. I see it’s a slow news week around here huh? So we’ll just manufacture our own.
I got the NXE and loading the games to the hard drive to play them without the disk spinning is worth it right there alone. Nice and quiet now so…na-na-naaah-na-na-naaaahh!!
Those suckers are quick, man I’m try to play some games tonight brah!
RRoD is a hardware issue, not software.
If the update causes any problems then it is something completely different then the RRoD problem.
You guys really don’t read well, do you ?? the extended warranty doesn’t expire before NXE comes. The extended warranty is set for 3 years from date of PURCHASE, not LAUNCH. So if you get an RRoD you call Microsoft and they’ll fix your Xbox. Anyway I don’t think why software that doesn’t push hardware to its limit (causing overheat) would cause RRoD. We’ll see in a couple of days.
what you didnt mention in your post was that when you send your 360 off for repairs when you get it back it comes with a new 3 year warranty for RROD. I asked them about it when I got mine back and was assured they had extended it for another 3 years.
Ever stop to think Microsoft is just ramping up their customer service department to handle the obvious increase in traffic caused the holiday season? New users with random problems aside, I’m betting many old users will RRoD because of too many hours playing Gear2 and/or COD5 and/or Left4Dead and/or any other of the many awsome games arriving in the next 2 months.
I bet you think PlanetX is going to slam into Earth in the year 2012 too…
So i had no idea about getting the RROD from the NXE update. I have a 360 from the summer of 2006. Before this I have never really had a problem with my xbox. Sure it would occasionally freeze but i can count all of them on one hand. This morning when I downloaded the update it worked just fine to start off. After I logged in and went to accept the agreements of the new terms my 360 froze. I turned it off and right back on it gave me the RROD. I waited a few minutes and it work just fine when i turned it back on. About 10 minutes later when i was making my avatar it froze again but this time after i turned it off it only gives me RROD when ever i turn it on.
I’ve got this exact same problem… and I mean exact.. two freezes, two restarts and RRoD every time turned on now. Did you get this reseolved at all?
No I have not done anything today. Today was a pretty busy day with class and work but I plan to call customer service tomorrow.
same thing happened to me two freezes two restarts. third time i turned it one i got the “checkered flag of death” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3TMpmbzW0c(this is a video of someone getting the “CFoD”) now i have the red rings. needless to say im pissed and i will never buy another MS product again.
I’m also a Victim of the RROD after downloading the NXE. Downloaded it about 3 hours ago and it worked fine for a while, even tried out the new streaming netflix. Then i go and turn the system back on and play a game for a bit and start looking around the new friends interface and the system freezes, hit the power button and go to turn it back on, and *Ta-Da* RROD. I just hope i got my call into the support desks early enough today that i won’t be at the end of the line for repairs.
I have a launch 360 (almost 3 years old), never had a single issue. I download the NXE, and the systems starts freezing, fails to boot beyond the logo, and within 10 minutes…I got red ring of death. It is completely dead. Coincidence? Maybe, but one hell of a coincidence. It is VERY likely NXE broke my 360. I am 3 weeks from busting the red ring extended 3 year warranty, so I guess I will live to fight the grubs another day.
Damn it.
This cant be a coincidence as the exact same thing happened to me! 3 year old xbox with no previous problems, after i downloaded the update my console froze, so i turned it off and on several times, each time i got the read ring.
I have a box from July 2006…I have never had a problem with it…ever. Neither did my friend who I bought it from (and played on it with him regularly).
Got home from work last night, turned on my unit, signed in to Live, accepted the download. Didn’t even finish my McRib sandwich by the time the download was finished and my unit rebooted. Next thing I know, RRoD. I never got anything past that after the reboot. I called the customer service and, other than talking so fast I thought the kid was on meth, he was friendly and even let me b17ch a little and get out some frustration…to which he apologized for my inconvenience.
After discovering how long my unit will be out despite they are fixing it for free (4-6 weeks?!), I decided I’m just going to buy a new unit while this one is being repaired. The core console is less than $200 now, which is what I paid for this one when I bought it from my friend. Then when I get that one back, I’ll have one in a couple rooms and if either takes a crap again, I won’t be S.O.L. while it’s getting fixed.
But there is no doubt in my mind that it was the NXE update that caused mine to crash. You can say it’s a hardware issue or failure or overheating or whatever all you want, but when I (and the owner before me) have had no issues on this unit EVER until this ONE PARTICULAR DAY, that just seems like an AMAZING coincidence to me.
Okay, so i do not know if I am just one lucky son of a gun or what. I never called MS yesterday bc i was to busy. SO this morning I was thinking about calling them before i went to class. I unhooked everything from the TV and 360 then reconnected it. I also changed my video settings back to TV from HD. So I turn it on thinking there is going to be a chance that that is what it was. I look up and it is still RROD. I let it stay on for 30 minutes, they red lights just continue to flash. Before i leave to go to class i turn it off and turn it back on. What do you know it works again. It has not RROD in the past hour either. So I do not know how it happened but I apparently have a Zombie 360.
Sony fanboys, palm your hands together in prayer for the red rings, because it is your only salvation.
Dont count on it bro… Thats a temp fix what you did (and what i have been doing since 2 weeks from now). When i get RRoD i unhook all cables from the back of my console (except power), leave it like that for 20 mins (till the bugger gets cooked)… after that turn off, re-attach the video cable n then volla… i get un-interrupted play (no freezing no rrod)… but there is one issue which i cannot resolve… After the update, there is no freakin video!!! I get the ‘Mode not Supported’ error on my Samsung HDTV… i cant play nor do anything with my console (cause i cant see anything on the screen)… tried both (HDTV and normal TV) settings on video cable… my console does not have HDMI… does any1 know how can i fix this… it was working fine before the update…
Got an xbox 360 first gen, had 1 warranty job about 14 months after purchase.
Was looking forward to NXE and knew it would keel over with RRoD and sure enough it did.
The console cooks after about an hour of use, graphics pixelate and the 3 lights come on…. dead jim.
Called UK XBOX Support, spoke to Max (OMG - Voice recognition gone wrong, but funny too) and got through to a human (debatable). Did the usual serial number stuff, and no arguements free warranty replacement even though it is out of 3 year warranty.
Got to give MS one credit. They saw this one coming, and are being reasonable to fix out of warranty stuff (though you could argue its their fault in the first place). I have 3 weeks now on the PS3 and no GoW2, but thats life.
NXE defo caused this as my console never had a hickup until the patch, and then two crashes in two nights, resulting today in RRoD.
The same thing happen to me too and no I’m not a sonyfanboy. After the NXE update like today I’m playing Gears Of War 2 offline then the game froze. Turn my 360 off and turn it on again same thing happens game froze. After the third time I got the RROD.
It Happend my xbox360 which has worked good since i purchased it has sucumbed to rrod after nxe update
I suggest a petition for all out of warranty users to get a free fix since this IS microsofts fault who is with me.
My console IS out of warranty, MS confirmed this on the phone, however - they are STILL honouring the free repair, collection and resolution of the fault.
Whether this is because my console has previously been in for repair, or the age of the console falls under the original 3 year warranty, or what, Im not sure - BUT…
…Microsoft ARE without arguement, fixing it free of charge for me. I cant quibble about that, except the inconvenience factor, but hey ho - such is life.
Just installed NXE and after reboot my wireless network adapter does not work.
RRoD, 4 days after NXE… contacting support… wish me luck.
I have the exact same problem!
Mine was perfect before instantly after the new update it’s got the single red light (all these people can’t be pure chance!)
Grrrrrrrrr I’m not happy
My Xbox is less than one year old and it has worked perfectly until yesterday, two days after the new update. I got the red ring twice, but each time unplugging the unit and turning it back on solved the problem. No more. Now, the RROD is persistent and I have to send it in. My 7 year old is going to be bummed if it’s not back by Christmas. Something is definitely amiss with this update. What else would explain the quantity of failures?
Guess what….you were right….
Holy crap. This article is pure prophecy.
My 6 month old console RRoD’d the second time I started it after NXE.
mother f…ing microsoft messed up my console, the update from hell messed it up, rrod. I hate u microsoft. Elite system less than a year old, Downloaded update and it was fine, did not play for three days, turn it on today and there…..RROD .
Dont tell me its pure coincidence, microsoft made this a crap product like everything they do.
Well, it just happened. I downloaded the NXE last week. Today I installed Madden ‘09 to my hardrive and when i tried playing a game, IT FROZE. Upon restart, RRoD. Unreal. This is my 2nd 360 and 4th time w/ RRoD. Thank God the RRoD is now covered for 3 yrs….I’m sending mine in for repair.
I picked up my first rrod since the NXE. I have an original console from the first production run and have never hada problem. decided to install mass effect and blammo!!! rrod. No worries though… I called MS Tech support and they walked me through 2 minutes of tests and then set me up with free shipping and repair. Don’t get me wrong I’m miffed that my console is buggered, but at least getting it to the doctors office for fixing will be quick…. besides my girlfriend can do without my gaming habits for a week or 2
I have two 360’s one Elite system which worked great with NXE…so far. The other, a 2006 model had problems immediately after NXE update, it wasn’t even on for 5 min. I don’t see how it could overheat that fast in a nice cool room with an extra fan on the back of it, but I got the ROD, never had any problems before. I think Microsoft might just be in trouble if it is proven NXE caused so many failures and they don’t fix them.
Installed the update, rebooted, turned off the console and went to bed. Came home after work the next day, turned on the 360 and RROD. I am not going to make statements of why but just wanted to add my name to the number of people this is happening too.
Add one more to the list of RROD post NXE update. To be honest, I’m not sure if NXE was the cause or the fact that the box has seen more continous hours of use since Fall Out 3 was released. The box was made in 06 and has been happily running for 2 years now. Fall Out played with no problems for the first 20 hours but now randomly freezes and I get the RROD trying to reboot. Tried doing the clear cache thing but it was no help. This is untimely as I was recently laid off and finally have some time to play but it will be interesting to see if MS or the state of Indiana has better service.
I downloaded the NXE on the Thursday after it was released. Watched a DVD on the box Friday. Played a tiny bit of GTA4 on Saturday. On Monday, picked up a brand new copy of Saints Row 2, froze up before I ever got out of the intro movie.
My box was not quite a year old.
That night I set up a repair order, then I went out and picked up a PS3. Few days later, I traded my Xbox games.
The PS3 is better in some ways and worse in others. But I’ll tell you what it is … IT’S HERE IN MY HOUSE WORKING RATHER THAN SENT OFF AT THE MICROSOFT REPAIR CENTER!
I will NEVER give Microsoft another dime for ANYTHING. I dumped Windows for linux almost two years ago. I’m dumping my Windows Mobile phone for a Google Phone in February. And I’m dumping that xbox the moment it comes back from repair.
I HATE MICROSOFT, i have a 360 from 27th december 2007 and have had the NXE for a few weeks now, no problems untill last night when i was playing halo 3 online and then BLAM!!! screen frome and got the new spawn from hell “CFOD” CHECKERED FLAG OF DEATH!! here is a video of what happens
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m3TMpmbzW0c
either that happens, or the screen just goes completly black. at one stage the screen went black with a hint of orange =S or the screen just freezes up completly. help me please!!! microsoft should burn in hell!!!!!
Add another to the list of RROD after the NXE update. I have one of the first gens and never had a single problem until about a week after the update. It stared freezing a bunch and when I went to reset it I got the ring. Problem is, MS won’t fix it because it’s been apart already to have the fan replaced. I fail to see how an aftermarket fan can cause the RROD right after the NXE update. I’m seriously debating if I want another console or not.
Updated to NXE tonight and my console worked for 10minutes until power down. On power up I had the RROD issue. I called Microsoft and setup a repair order immediately. They will cover the repair (again), but this is crazy it’s my 4th xbox360 RROD failure.
same with me, 2007 model. no problems ever, downloaded nxe and froze once, turned off and on and now rrod. sent to xbox a week ago, waiting for the new one. It seems like a little more than coincidence. lets sue.
i just recently bought an xbox 360 and as soon as i hook up to xbox live it downloaded the nxe and it knocked out the sound from my hdmi and my game freezes up. i can’t believe there is no way to take that update off the harddrive. i even went and exchange my hdmi cable, my game, and just recently my xbox. i called xbox and they said that first it was my hdmi cable, then it was my internet connection then they said they are aware of the problem and are investigating it. BULL!@#$ if you ask me.
