360banned

Bad news, Xbox pirates. (Which, in turn, is good news for the industry as a whole.) Microsoft has dropped the “ban hammer” on several modded Xbox 360 consoles.

There’s some confusion as to whether Microsoft is merely banning the console or the account on the console. Either way, you’re in for a hassle.

This is what Major Nelson had to say about all of this…

Ahem:

I’ve gotten a few messages and seen some forum threads pop up on console bannings so I thought I’d post and let folks know what’s up. In our our continued effort to keep gameplay safe and secure for our community of more than 14 million members, Microsoft has taken action against a small percentage of Xbox 360 consoles that have been illegally modified in order to play pirated games. You should know that modifying your Xbox 360 console is also a violation of the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void your warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE. The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive, both from manufacturers and the local companies that support them. We will continue to employ and bolster anti-piracy security measures to counter piracy in the gaming industry and improve security in the Xbox LIVE community.

As always, the forums are filled with self-righteous “how dare they ban us!” posts. Whatever. If you’re keen to pirate games and dumb enough to have your 360 connected to Live you deserve to be banned.

  • hahaha. no NXE for you pirates. arrrrr!

  • That’s supposed to be a bad thing, not good!

  • not exactly, now they can load the pirated NXE that has been floating around, which is probably what got them banned in the first place.

  • not exactly, now they can load the pirated NXE that has been floating around, which is probably what got them banned in the first place.

  • amen to shutting them down. pirates should not have the same rights as people who pay for games (”suckers”).

    • You wouldn’t say the same thing if you couldn’t afford to buy all your games. I saved up for my xbox for MONTHS! And now they are dissabling NXE on modded consoles! WTF, I’m screwed! Well not you, because you most likely have a cash flow of 100s of $ a month.

  • Dude, if you can’t afford a video game, then stop playing them and get a job. Live within your means asshole.

Even still, Im not sure about the 360, but I know old xbox’s that were modded could be used for things like XBMC, which is a legit and cool mod. Unfortunately I don’t think a hardware mod exists that doesn’t allow you to pirate games.

Speaking to “back-up” copies, my personal opinion is that if they are not going to allow you to make them, then they should be required to replace damaged/broken games (or just DVDs/Blurays in general). If you lost it, your too much of a dumbass, minimum IQ needed.

Oh well, im not in the modding business and I don’t have a modded xbox (although I do have a red ring xbox, so just as good right?) so I don’t really care.

  • Meh, until the mods allow me to play games from other regions and/or run homebrew code I don’t care, I don’t need to play “backups”, I just can’t stand region locks.

  • Modding your xbox 360 doesnt cost MS or game companies money. If i didnt have mine modded. I would go back to buying them used off EBAY or craigslist. Which result in NO MONEY GAINED FOR THEM. This way I can try and play games I like. I end up throwing 20-40 xbox 360 game disc out because they suck (Played for 10-15 hours and lost interest). I know which ones rock and would buy it if its in the 20 dollar bin.

  • You ot are so dumb, you really think there are some peeps who know how to get round the banning hahahaha.
At end of day i work my arse off and earn a good living, if robbing twats like microshite want to charge £40 plus for a game they derserve to lose money.

  • You lot are so dumb, you really think there are some peeps who know how to get round the banning hahahaha.

  • Um, anyone else get the impression that CrunchGear is in bed with the SPA? The anti-piracy tone of this article really betrays this to a nauseating level.

  • FUK Microsoft!, I’ve spent almost 1000$ on several XBOX 360s because of their damned flawed ass system that keeps burning itself out with the rings of death! I mean to no fault of my own my damn 400$ system burns out?!? Shyt Microsoft couldn’t you have developed an adequette heat sync by now… SURE you could have but no, your to worried about the next best thing to worried about how flawed your products are… The Zune that corrupts itself, the 360 that scorches itself… I mean damn! They wanna cry about losing money? What about the thousands of people who went to turn on their XBOX only to get the flashing red lights emitted from the “rings”. As long as someone creates barriers, their will always be people like me to knock them down! So once again FUK MICROSOFT and more power to the dedicated gamers out there who make it happen!

    • Considering their THREE YEAR RETROACTIVE WARRANTY for the systems which at the time of this writing should still be in effect even for LAUNCH models, and tht repairs cost much less than a new console, I have a hard time believeing your story of purchasing several 360 systems….. for $400 no less. There is NO reason you would have purchased a second premium system since you could have just used all your connectors and accessories from the previous system.

      • i would agree with d zero…i myself have been thru FOUR, that’s rite, FOUR different xbox 360’s…i am now on my 5th console after the 1st four console gave me the red rings of death…FUCK MICROSOFT!!!! i will pirate every sinsle one of their games and feel now remorse about it!! to spend $60 a pop on games to have ur system burn out is retarded !!! plus the ban is only for going on xbox live…so no skin off my nose. Pirate Games 4life…call my Jack Sparrow maties…AARRRRR!!!!!

  • Good thing I’m not trying to convince you then huh? When your deployed in the desert of some shytay ass country your options are limited as well as your venue for entertainment, so yea I did buy a total of 3 new XBOX 360 systems. To answer your “but they fix them for you” line, mayne please who wants to wait a month to enjoy a product that they paid for immediately?

    • It took me like a week, and thats hardly MS’s fault if YOU coulden’t wait for it to be repaired and instead of getting a free fix you paid $400 for a new one.

      • it took me a week to get mine back too, if u total the 4 xbox’s i went thru, it would be 4 weeks of not playing anything…it’s obvious u and Bill Gates go golfing together

        • What the hell?

What did you expect them to do, air-drop your 360 from a helicopter? They already fixed it FOUR TIMES for free, couldn’t you read a book or watch tv for those periods of one week without a console? Don’t you have any other consoles? Load a damn emulator on your PC if you are THAT addicted to gaming that a week off kills you.

  • lol love last comment!
If I buy something i should be able to wtf i like with it..
not pay 300 quid to lease it
I’ll continue not to pay for my 50 crap games 2 good ones til I die.. I’m not saying developers should lose out either, but they need to change their business ethics at M$

  • No that is not a good thing, not everbody uses their modded xbox for piracy. You know there is some people that are not good at handling games, like really your kids, so in order to not HAVE TO SPEND A WHOLE 60 BUCKS WHEN THEIR DISC GETS SCRATCHED!!!! they can just make a BACKUP of the original disc. Not everybody pirates games.

  • Man there is a lot of children here, First off: this article is very amateur, try being unbiased for a while, maybe then someone will take you seriously.

A lot of complaints here are that paying $40-60 for a game is too expensive and its microsofts fault. Thats great guys! Except microsoft doesn’t make games. Game developers do. If you don’t want to spend $60 on a game, wait a year or 2. GET A FUCKING JOB.

I personally think pirating things is bad because it hurts the industry, so if you like a game go out and purchase it, otherwise in the future those games wont be being made any more.

That being said, Not everyone can afford to buy every game that comes out, and a lot of games are not of great quality or are something that you would not buy given the option to. I download games to see if they are worth purchasing or if its something I know I would never buy, (Example: My Sims Kingdom for wii) Not something I would buy, but fun to try it for a while.

Whats really great though is that this has turned me on to many games I would have overlooked had I not played previous versions or different titles from the same studio. (Example: Saints Row 1,2, Dokapon Kingdom, Persona 3,4, Rune Factory, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Harvest Moon, ect, ect.)

So my point is: Grow up, stop being an idiot, and realize that while free games are great, stealing peoples work hurts the industry and the people that made it. Support your favorite game companies and don’t freeload.

  • fuck microsoft period. the three warranty that they give out is usually useless to people who’ve had their xbox for a long time. like me for example i have no warranty now. i have actually bought like 10 games and then 1 day i said fuck this. i cant keep up with paying 60 dollars a game. modded my xbox successfully and now have like 15 new burnt games. and i’ve played them all on live. no bans. ive heard that some people have been playing on live with burnt games for years and no ban. and fuck waiting years too finally but the game when its cheap. i think people who are just saying to buy the game are just jealous that they can’t mod. if one of u guys actually had a modded xbox then i bet you would be doin the same thing. just be smart and do what the other brothers are doin. if u want to keep buying games then go ahead and waste your money. soon youll realize the games that are cheap and complete bull that you bought was complete shit. then you never play that game again. well i bet thats happened to at least everybody once. this the right thing to do trust me.

  • Banning is a fucked up way of scaring people from modding, period!!! People should have every right to use THEIR own technology anyway they want!! Modding is Knowledge…. Just cuz your a complete dumbass and can’t decipher what an .iso file is… don’t bash on others who can. Nelson said 14 million members!!! That’s about 13 million people who fill Bill Gates Platnum lined pockets every fuckin day!! All in all the message is simple….. Fuck M$ and their crappy and expensive products…. Fuck you cuz your opinion won’t stop the world of modding….. and Fuck this post, cuz I just wasted 5 minutes on a bunch of idiots AAARRRR!!!!! I’m going to play rockband beatles assholes!! HAPPY WAITING!!!!

    • And Microsoft isn’t stopping you from using YOUR technology the way YOU want……. just don’t expect to make it to their servers if you do.

News flash, they have a contract you AGREE to when you connect to Live, the contract says you get access to live as lone as you use no modded consoles. You break your end of the contract, they break theirs.

By the way, its the SYSTEM that gets banned, not your account. You can still sign in with another unmodded 360.

Don’t get me wrong, im for modding, but complaining about MS banning modded systems is idiotic and childish.

  • First off i have had my xbox modded for over two yrs now and i have never been banned. people that are gettin banned are dumbasses. they ethier A didnt wait to and played before launch date. B didnt fix the iso so that it would pass stealth and verification. Also Alot of yall are talkin about shit yall dont even kno about. most people on here dont even have a modded xbox, or they do but dont understand the how to safely burn games and on hear talkin like they kno something. MS can try their hardested but they wont be able to ban people that know what they are doin. its the ingorant people that are gettin banned. its easy read up on google before u burn ur game. if u dont fix iso u get banned if u do fix iso u can play forever. easy as A,B,C

  • Wow it’s funny how the people who mod other peoples xbox’s know how to un-ban the consoles for a little price that they offer by taking the chips out of the console and putting new ones……hahaha I feel bad for the dum lil Microsoft female dogs who report us cuz guess what!! You can’t stop us! We’ll be back ha

    • who the fuck puts mod chips in xboxs to mod them that was played out in 90s. no one puts mod chips in the system what they do is erase the firmware that MS put on disk drive and flash it with a new firmware that allows your disk drive to play games that dont have MS special ecpryication that they put on thier disks.

  • Actually for 1 Cyber, even if you get your console fixed it still has a limited life time regardless of how many times its fixed so your wrong when you say that. for 2 i dont get my xbox fixed by M$ for many reasons but the biggest being what they say they do when they “fix” your xbox. Now, i dont think modding is something good to do but if you cant afford the outrageous price or $60 a game, then you should do modding. I have no prob not modding and buying or burning back ups but if game industries and game retailers are gonna sell them at that price i will mod till i die because it should be a price that everyone can pay. I have sometimes before i started modding have waited months or even years before actually getting a game and by that time its been washed up and not played anymore. So my point is is that if you cant afford then do modding its not bad. Modding is only bad if the person doing it abuses it and doesnt damaging things with it such as hacking, glitching accounts, hacking servers, hacking accounts, hacking computers, ETC. So its ok to mod in my view untill game industries and retailers realize that people are fed up with their outrageous prices but obviously they still dont realize and the only way out of this dark tunnel for them and modders is either continue to battle the war against and for modders or to lower the price and hope for a new beginning but if modding then still continues then ban the modders and i mean all of them if that doesnt satisfy them because the universal theme ive been noticing is “WTF THE PRICES ARE INSANE!!!!” well the perfect price would be to reduce it to atleast $30 or $40 because $60 dollar a pop for games when you think about it is for EX: you want 5 games for christmas well 5×60=300 which is outrageous because i sometimes play and buy pc games which 90% of the time cost brand new as $20 which if you do the math that 1/3 of $300 ($100) so i think$100 is reasonable to pay for 5 games even tho that is alot for games still but its not outrageous. I stand with D Zero and the others that support fair and non-damaging modding as i listed examples before that modding isnt bad when corporations make it so only semi-wealthy to wealthy families can actually buy games (yes if you save up you can but im saying like when it comes out) yes people can wait but it makes no difference in the fact that the pricing is not cheap and affordable.

  • SO sean or who ever said that about being non biased which if you read it i dont support modding but i dont agree that modding is fair but untill modders and game retailers and industries can get along theres gonna always be ways to get around what ever game corps do.
