And now your credit card has a built-in keypad

I suppose this is a good idea, although shoppers are loathe to add yet another step to their transactions. The card has a built-in numeric keypad, and when you put in your PIN, it’ll display a security code like the one sites always ask you for now.

That makes spending a lot of money with a stolen card significantly harder if not impossible online, and if retailers would just ask for ID with the things then maybe I wouldn’t be waiting on a $570 reimbursement for the last time my card got jacked. What did he spend $80 on at a gas station? I guess if he drives a Navigator it might have just been gas.

You can use this to buy iTunes tracks on your biomimetric-secured lappy, then store it all on a keypad-protected hard drive.

  • I am not sure, but I think there are similar devices already in use in some parts of Asia. The idea of having a keyboard in a CC is actually not new.

  • I’ve seen one of these keypad credit cards while standing in line at a Dim Sum Eatery at the Hong Kong International Aiport and just thought it was a very slim calculator. Which is also a common sight all throughout Asia, calculators, that is. I’m always amazed at the neat gadgets I see in Asia, such as your cell phone behaving like a credit card or wallet in Japan. Anyone remember the smart chips that came with some credit cards? American Express Blue Card was one such card. I don’t think it has penetrated the market as well as card issuers visioned, so it will be interesting to see how the keypad credit card does. I’d love to have one to test out when it becomes available in the States.

  • When it comes to rectangular plastic with buttons, not as cool the credit card-sized calculator — but still impressive.
