I wonder how well it actually works. We’ll find out sometime today.

If the voice recognition is half as good as Say Who and Say Where iphone apps, then it has a shot.
And now they have your voice too ;)
Thanks to Goog 411, the voice recognition will be as spot on if not more than any product in the world.
Google is crack, and we’re all junkies. Can’t wait to get this app.
This app looks pretty damn cool. While I love my iPhone, typing on the screen still is a pain in the butt. So a search function that uses voice recognition is pretty cool.
There are a few other voice apps I want to try out, especially for making calls. That is one feature I miss from my Blackberry Pearl.
So, just before I typed this, I downloaded the App and the voice recognition was not part of it. When does it actually get released?

I’m always excited to see 3,4, and 5 step processes (searching for things on Google) narrowed down to lesser steps. It’s easy to make things simple more complicated, but apps that making the complex simple (voice to search) are fantastic in my opinion.
Huh. Maybe I do need an iPhone after all.
Sounds like a great idea once the technology is perfected. Until then expect to see many interferences and issues with it that will be more annoying than anything.

but didn’t jerry say that yahoo was going to be an innovation leader?
iPhone speech recognition – status review update to September is @ http://speechanalytics.blogspot.com/2008/09/iphone-speech-recongiotion-status.html
Google have invested a lot of time and effort gathering voice samples to ‘perfect’ their voice recognition database – much the same as they did with gathering translation texts to launch their translation service a couple of years back, which is so far ahead of the traditional (babelfish-style) automated translation services that it’s laughable. I’m betting they’ll get this cracked… though it may take a few months before we really believe it.
What IS significant is that they’re clearly happy building on the iPhone customer base rather than doing what other companies might do who’ve just launched their own phone OS. Damn they’re smart.
So the Google search stuff is awesome on the iPhone. Really love the interface, and all that. What I can’t for the life of me understand, is why if I go in Safari and type “google.com” I will get the neato tailored interface (same as Google Mobile App), but if I click to search using Safari’s built-in Google search bar, I get taken to a standard desktop Google page. C’mon, Apple, this is so unlike you… Perhaps this will change with the new Google features in 2.2? Sure hope so…
Oh, and Google, please please please give us an offline Reader app?
The Say Who and Say Where apps from Dial Directions already does this. And their voice recognition technology is already pretty darn good.
Is it only me, or is this not posted on itunes yet? I just went to download and got an old version.
It appears that they’ve submitted it to Apple but are still waiting for App approval. If it’s not released today though there’ll be some egg on Apple/Google’s faces as the NYT reported that it may get released today…
Pure awesome. I hope they use the same voice recognition tech that is in the GOOG-411 service.. its pretty damn good.
When it comes to innovation there is Google and Apple and then everyone else. This is what happens when you combine the two together – pretty impressive.
ja, it’s a tech of a future )
i can’t believe it.
Google 411 works great as long as it’s NOT on speakerphone.
Hopefully this new app will work equally as well on the iPhone with the added killer addition of being able to search for anything in Google index!
Peace,
Michael
If only ChaCha had been so smart. Maybe now they can die.
They do offer this same service, except through a phone number and you have to wait for a human to answer the question. The app could be something they can do very easily though, maybe also have some interface to give you a few results to munch on while someone gets the answer?
can we do these voice searches on a home pc? sounds like a speak locator to me.
TalkLocator.com
is this app working for anyone out there? I don’t see the microphone icon to initiate a voice search???
This might be the first time I wish I had an iPhone instead of the iPod Touch.
Two tech gaints joining hands can take the computing and wireless experience to the next level.Kudos to Google!
so when can we expect speech to text email? this is needed before someone gets killed driving.
We refer to that as a phone call, heh.
I’ve had my fair share of busy times, but there were a few lines I just wouldn’t cross, and driving while sending an email was one of them. If what you’re doing is just so important that you can’t drive, find a bus, get a driver, pull over, whatever. Distracting yourself while driving is not worth risking a life over.
Doesn’t look like they made that Friday timeline. I’ll be looking forward to it tomorrow. You had to get me all excited. Now look at me, I can’t stop checking my App Store Updates.
Goog…. Google now hires its employees in kindergartens
they are funny though!
Doesn’t look like they made the day after either, who knows when this will actually come out. No updates yet. I wonder, will this app work on the old iPhone with the new software, or only on a 3G network?
Can’t wait for this app.
People don’t do research on an iphone. They do it on their desktop or notebook or UMPC. I found some voice recognition software named Tazti speech recognition that actually is a free download and performs voice searches of Google, Yahoo, MSN, Wikipedia, Amazon, eBay and many other websites. It also lets me log into and navigate Facebook and Myspace by talking to my PC. It really works well.
Here’s their youtube demo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1tt_aeIAM8
Did you notice that the stage’s lightings changes to match the san francisco then the new york pictures?
You should also check out the Krave (motorola.com/krave). It has a digital QWERTY keyboard and its narrower then the iPhone. It’s a flip phone that has a clear top and its touch sensitive, so you can use your phone without even opening it…
