XPeria X1: “The ultimate Windows Mobile phone anyone can ask for…”
by John Biggs on November 14, 2008

Head over to MobiltyToday as they examine, in gory detail, what they’re calling “The ultimate Windows Mobile phone anyone can ask for… ” My only question is this: what if I never asked for a WinMo phone from Sony Ericsson? What if I asked for the charm and power of a UIQ-powered P800, my first and favorite smartphone? What if asked for a logical addition to the S-E family instead of some weird HTC-designed monstrosity? What if I asked for some S-E phones on these shores? I’m happy they’re trying, but this ain’t the direction they should be taking if they want to hit the big time.

I was talking to some mobile guys in Stockholm and one mentioned that S-E was always doing well and now moved to WinMo while Motorola is betting on Android, which, in my opinion, is a smart move for low-end smartphone manufacturers. S-E, take a tip from Motorola: nobody ever got fired for choosing Microsoft but they did falter for being behind the times.

  • I cannot help but giggle at “ultimate Windows Mobile phone” :-D Ehhh…

  • “Noise cancelating ear gels” @ 2:30 made me giggle.

  • The P800 is my favourite smart phone too. Made the mistake of upgrading it to a P990. What went wrong?

  • I sometimes forget how iPhone-centric TC/CG is. Thank you for reminding me.

I left WinMo for BB a while back, and I’ve never turned back, but they’re not bad devices at all, and the X1 seems to be the best one out there. You have to keep in mind that they’re not targeting the fashion concious mac-herd, but business users who would usually use a HTC or unbranded WinMo device.

  • Mobile phone in Brazil is not commom. Here its so expensive, something like 3300$$

  • This is a crap phone. Decent hardware, but terrible software. 7 hits of a button just to dial a number is unacceptable. Software is buggy, and it doesn’t really make it easier to get things done (compared to the Blackberry or iPhone)

  • I still prefer BB Bold and iPhone by far, but have to admit that this is a cool device, but I still can’t call a Win Mobile device “ultimate”.

  • This post is quite funny. Of all the things that this phone is (or isn’t). It ain’t a monstrosity - Its the first phone you can remove from your trouser pocket around your iphone toting friends without all that inadequacy (lol). Truth be told, I like what I see and despite the great review of panels, if they get Android on this thing - I’ll pull the trigger (lickity-spit).

    • Inadequancy?

Just show they features that every other phone has like the ablity to set your own ringtones, MMS, or copy and paste.

What are they going to do, show you up by resizing a photo through pinching the screen?

  • i own this phone and love it. Of course WinMo is not the most fancy mobile OS out there, but you can do whatever you want with it…there is soo much software, you cant even make it look like an iphone interface if you want to.
Also there is TouchFlo3D with brings a touch friendly interface that looks amazing…848×480 3inch WVGA screen (Iphone has 480×320), full qwerty keyboard, Car Navigation software and loads of other software for WinMo.
Also there is xda-developers where you can get tons of free software, custom made roms for you device etc.
AND it acutally isnt much bigger than a normal mobile Phone…
just wanted say something positive between all this techcrunch-like MS bashing :)

  • I will buy one of these as soon as I can. I have been waiting for a win mobile phone with all the bells and whistles for a long time. I use sql hand held databases in sprintdb. I need the mobility and windows compatibility. I had this with an iPAQ but then carried my phone and camers seperate. So this phone is right up my alley so to speak.

    I am in Western Canada.

  • Very nice by window mobile. On my website you can online text for free. Anyone can use the system and also I have a Text Growth Blog about information on phones and ads. This phone will draw attention. Just click on my name go directly to my website.

  • You know the world has changed when a Microsoft product has become the niche alternative.

  • The Amazing phone. I like it..

  • Bottomline, the XPERIA X1 is being positioned — not just as a consumer or a productivity device, but one that offers you the best of both worlds — a “wicked” entertainment appliance, yet loaded with productivity features that the most fastidious mobile professional could use very effectively in an enterprise context. There’s already a fans website for the phone http://www.Xperia-X1.org LOL
