Google’s the latest hit by the arbitrary iPhone ban-hammer?

by John Biggs on November 16, 2008

Everyone is so excited – so excited! – about the Google iPhone app that is supposed to allow instant voice search. But where is it? The youtube video that preceded it is now down and all mention has been scoured from Google’s website, Soviet-style. Not a good sign.

Writes TC:

This is an extraordinary event. Other search app providers have told me they’ve been kept waiting months for approval of their app, with no explanation from Apple. But Google and Apple are close, even sharing Google CEO Eric Schmidt as a board member. Something definitely went sideways, most likely involving Apple throwing a fit of some sort (Apple is just plain weird about press).

Clearly the rumors that Apple is planning a search system are true and this tread too closely to Apple’s turf. But why not just say it? Why all the skulking? Could Apple be taking a page from Stalin’s playbook? The “hushing up inconvenient news” page, not the “purge of millions of intelligentsia page,” obviously.

  • Soviet-style . . . Stalin ? Why such extreme metaphore ? More appropriate and closer to home would be the Cheney-Bush gangsters when attempting to describe skewed news or outright spin and cover-up of inconvenient truths.

Even closer to home would be the the majority of US press “reporting”.

  • Could it be the app was simply not ready in time ?
Not up to Apple’s standards ?
Did not pass Apples stringent power consumption requirements ?
    Open suggestion to Mr. Biggs:
Go to school, learn about apps or journalism…at this point, it’s obvious you’ve done neither.

  • John, you are a warped piece of work… unreal in your thinking. Our educational system at work… too funny. Bush was a liberal in his governance so blaming him means nothing. Big spending liveral. Your reference to inconvenient truth is all about power and money. Liberal power and money. Go Gore… he is laughing all the way to the bank.

  • Apple is scarily cult-like. I used-to love their computers, but in the era of the ipod, I avoid their products whenever possible.

  • do we start to see Google’s conflict of interests with Android and iPhone?

  • Maybe they saw the light and started developing a Windows Mobile version instead…

Yeah, im joking, though I wish it were true. The iPhone is not the only damn phone out there, show some love for other platforms Google! Your mobile maps app is a complete and total joke compared to Microsoft’s own Live Search app.

  • My thoughts were the same as John Whitney’s above. Sort of antiquated metaphors you are using. The USA no longer needs to point to other nations when talking about psyops against citizens, etc. Just say “American Style” and you won’t sound like a character from an old talkie.

  • The only (very few) apps that Apple has EVER refused to put in *THEIR* online store… have been ones that have violated copyrights, conflicts, obscene, scams, or violated agreements that the *DEVELOPERS* have signed.

The Google app is coming… why can’t it just wait in line (for a couple of weeks) for approval just like all the other apps had to?

  • If apple continues to lock out developers for arbitrary reasons The G1 and Storm will become the smartphone of choice.

  • ]]] arbitrary reasons

Name an app that was “banned for arbitrary reasons” and I’ll
tell you the (obvious) reason it was banned.

  • You know, Windows Mobile phones have had Live Search with voice recognition for over a year now.Works very well. Say “Sushi” into the phone and get a map of local sushi restaurants with ratings and distances, menus, one-click phone numbers. As usual, Apple is late to the game but grabbing as much PR as possible because of its massive inferiority complex…

  • Google controls You-Tube, not Apple. They probably pulled it down because it isn’t ready.

This is one of the dumbest opinion pieces I’ve seen. Apple wants to protect their brand, and Google doesn’t want to release anything prematurely. The app has to go through Apple’s on-line store to be installed (weird, but a good control for some of the PITA software out there), so we all have to wait.

As for Windows Mobile – it is a POS. Been using it for a while now. Never has been ready for prime time.

Are things getting tough at Crunchgear? Possible layoffs soon?
This click-whoring article should help bring in the basement-dwelling PC gamer/haters. They’re always good for a few thousand clicks anytime there’s some good Apple hating to be done.

  • John is just finally tuning into who Apple really is. Don’t worry John the pioneers take the arrows.

  • Apple has turned to shit, plain and simple. They sell a INTENTIONALLY crippled iphone, screw their developers, and now fck up their laptops.

I have been a loyal apple customer, but NO MORE. To hell with you Steve Jobs, to hell with the iphone, FCK APPLE. Apple now sucks.

My iphone 3g is for sale if anyone wants to be raped by AT&T for about 2 years.

Again, SCREW YOU STEVE JOBS. You’ve lost my business and that of countless others.
