Core i7 hitting Dells, Alienwares, Gateways

Those big packages from Intel must have arrived at all the custom prebuilt computer sites, because all of a sudden they’re all making a racket about how their latest setups rock the new Core i7s like a hurricane:

  • Dell has them in their XPS 730x starting today at $2K
  • Alienware has them in the X-58 series starting at $1650 (or $3700, your choice)
  • Gateway has them in the 6800 series starting at a suspiciously low $1250, considering how fancy the case is.

And of course they have all the other fixins as well.Keep in mind that Core i7 is not a magic bullet, though companies will try to tell you otherwise. It’s a fundamentally faster processor than the Core2, but a fast Core2 can still take on a slow Core i7, so check your hard hardware sites for the latest reviews before plunking down for a budget next-gen processor.

  • In other words, wait a year for the Intel “Tock” and by then, SSD HD will be cheap and plentyful enough to make any laptop more powerful than a Craig! AMD should also be in the race by then with their updated laptop processors so the deals will only get better for consumers!

Why no news from HP regarding these processors?

    • no, i’d say now is the time to buy – this is the optimized version of the 45nm process, it’s going to be fantastic for just about everything. You can of course always wait another year for the next iteration, but I think the Nehalems are a big step.

      I didn’t see anything from HP – I bet they’re prepping a Blackbird though.

      • Overall, yes, I agree with you Devin, you can always wait “another year” but consider what will be mainstream in a year beyond just the processor:

-new Windows Version (what Vista should have been x64)
-500GB SSD finally affordable as the main HDs
-tock (faster, more efficient quad maybe octa)
        -DDR3 mainstream
        -OLED monitor
        -USB3
        -1GB GPU

This, at least to me, is worth waiting for if you don’t NEED a new laptop right now and can make-due with what you got for a little longer. All this stuff will be at the same price as high-end features are now.

  • I want one, but will definitely wait until others start taking advantage of it’s power and architecture better….and of course the price comes down.

    But they are so sexy.
