I like how the headline says only the PS3 when the 360 uses $143 a year ($2 a year less or 16 cents less a month). Why not say The PS3 and Xbox use an average of $144 a year. I am calling BS on this article for that reason alone. The media uses this tactic ALL the time.

I picked one up for my PC. It rocks. Turn off the PC and the monitor, speakers, printer, scanner all cut off completely. No vampire drain. Turn the PC on and all come back on. Smart Strip LCG3, got it from amazon, well worth the $32.

The text above is a bit misleading. The graph shows that in standby, you save around 90% of power compared to when it’s on.
When you reach behind the console and kill it (either by pulling the plug off or hitting the kill power switch, the consumption will be zero.

So the correct way to put is that is you leave your console on 24×7, it’s expensive. If you leave in standby, it’s way (~90%) better.

This is important, specially because someone might thin; “well, since standby is the same think, I will just leave it on”, which will consume much more.

Agreed, especially seeing its a bitch to reach the plug that’s behind a heavy TV cabinet.
I’d only leave a PS3 on stand-by if I wanted to use remote start

I started looking into those UPS/Surge protectors that totally kill any power to a device once it’s gone into standby/”off” mode.

ex: Even though you turn your PC off the monitors, speakers, etc etc still are getting power. So when you do turn the PC off that’s plugged into one of these Smart UPS systems, it completely stops power running to everything. Thus saving green without having to physically unplug it all.

I forgot where I saw this, but it sounds like it’d be a good idea to get a couple (PC and TV/game area)

Good article – but what about all of the “saved settings” that reset after a period of time without power? I don’t want to have to reconfigure all of my A/V equipment everyday.

Looks like I am going to be unplugging my 360 from now. I guess it really does pay (or save) to unplug your electronics.
