An Italian boy has been diagnosed with “PlayStation addiction” following a marathon gaming session. The boy, 13, was rushed to a hospital where doctors thought he had suffered a stroke or some other serious condition.

Nope, just played a little too much Mega Man!

It gets better. After leaving the hospital, the boy told his father to throw away the PlayStation for fear of further complications.

What ever happened to self control?

  • I doubt he was playing Mega man 9 on PS3, cus that is one freaking hard game! I gave up in half hour not being able to finish stage 1. :(

  • Whats self control?

  • I’m exactly like this….

    except with alcohol.

  • Don’t throw the ps3, give it to me!

  • nothing wrong with a little marathon. I dont see how self control really factors into this. I’m curious to hear what they actually DID at the hospital though, seeing as I doubt he was “addicted” in the first place.
Oh well, more bad press for gaming.

  • Megaman 9 is too easy, kid probably just freaked out after seeing Dr.Wiley’s nips

  • This kid has it all wrong, don’t run away from your addiction, embrace it. It’s not drugs or unprotected sex, it’s a videogame!

  • why was he sent to the hospital after a marathon? was he like have convulsing or something?

    • should… eat food.. but can’t … put… controller down… whats… this pause… button I keep hearing about… ah well… more megaman…. hisaaaah

  • This “addiction” thing is getting out of control. Heroin is an addiction, it re-writes your brain chemistry to make you NEED it. Other addictions are also psychological, but if you are so weak of a person that you will put yourself in physical danger for video games, well, I think we should just let Darwins theory do it’s work. Seriously, video game addiction is about the most pathetic thing in the world, anyone “diagnosed” with it should be treated like a lame horse.

  • Wait what? Why would he go to the hospital from playing a game too long? Besides if he sits in front of a game system for 12 hours…his ps3 is either gonna freeze or just mess up. And if i was going to be addicted to a game on the ps3 it’d probly be Oblivion or fallout3 just because those are long games. Anyway once again bad rep for us gamers.

    • 12 hours isn’t all that hard on your system. When I picked up Valkyria Chronicles (best. tactical rpg. ever. ending is perfect too), I literally played it from the moment I woke up to when I went to bed, for 3 days until I beat it. My ps3 didn’t even get hot, nor did I have any medical issues. I also made sure to eat and drink plenty though. I bet this guy just had a series of circumstances (high stress is usually a big factor) come together to nail him this one time, as opposed to being anything serious.

  • Another thing; if anyone would be diagnosed with this it’s the WoW gamers(No offense to them!) but some people take it too far to skip school and such. This kid’s just a idiot. He’s right in his own house. he can grab snacks to not starve.

  • I think he did show a lot of self control, at least at the end, more so than most people his age let alone gamers.

  • I call bullshit! I’ve played games for WAAAAY WAAAAAAAY longer, think 24 hour marathons and didn’t have any problems. Is playstation addiction an actual medical condition? How did they determine this? Did the doc look at a MRI scan and say “see this area of activity? thats because he played too much playstation!”? I highly doubt it!

This story is just a stab at gamers by people who fear games.

    Think Jack Thompson.

  • The kid must have had some type of mental problem for something like this to happen. You don’t just get addicted to something like this so obviously he already had problems.

  • truly i believe marathons are the best thing about gaming i marathon once a week every week for 40 hours on saturday and sunday and i turned out just fine …. but i also have a mini-fridge right next to my lounge chair i go through alot of dr peppers lol ….. the kid just didnt have it in him

    • He must have just sat there without going to the bathroom or drinking any water and got dehydrated. Once again only a child with a mental problem would be too dumb to forget to drink water or pop while doing a marathon. F*cking nub. =P

  • What? Foreal? 13 and he has already thrown his entire existence into a video game? Mega Man at that? Wow….

That hospital must have some shit doctors for them to say that shit.

  • LOL, show me a boy that DOESNT have video game addiction and I will show you a figment of your imagination.

  • I find it interesting that some gamers seem so rabidly opposed to the idea that some people can be addicted to videogames.

More often than not, when I see an article about videogame addiction posted on a videogame or tech centric blog, there is a heavy round of: “Grab your torches and pitchforks! They can’t say our videogames are addictive!”

Addiction comes in many forms. You can be addicted to sex, alcohol, other drugs, the internet, television. Anything that lets you escape from reality is a potential addiction, for some people.

Just because some people can be addicted to videogames, doesn’t mean that videogames are evil, or that they automatically addict anyone that plays them. I know a lot of people that enjoy having a few beers, or a bit of whiskey or scotch, once in a while. These people don’t have any problem with the fact that some people are addicted to alcohol. They acknowledge that alcohol can be addictive, and then move on with their lives. Which includes having the occasional beer.

And just because corporate media brings out the torches and pitchforks sometimes, doesn’t mean we should counter them by bringing out our torches and pitchforks, just on the other side of the issue.

Life is complex and beautiful. Headlines tend to simplify that complexity, and are often highly biased, evaluative, and don’t include a lot of facts or actual analysis.

Instead of skimming some article, and then writing a quick response about how stupid the media / kid that was diagnosed are / is, why don’t we take a step back, realize that this is just an article, which doesn’t represent reality very well, and then move on with our lives.

You know, listen instead of talking all of the time.

  • What happened to self control??

He’s a 13 year old boy who apparently has a compulsive addiction to video games! Telling his dad to throw the game set away *is* self control, and rather admirable control too!

  • I had self control once, then I woke up.

  • i am a gamer who think today’s gamers r gay. not the games. the guys playing them.

    • Well… If you are a gamer, that means that you are one of those today’s gamers so you are gay.

And with all the new casual hype, how can journalists can make the difference between “casual” gamers dans “hardcore” gamers.
I think that the barrier between hardcores dans casual is nonexistant and that everyone should be considered a gamer.

  • It is hard to avoid addiction when it is a product like ps3 that is trying to get you addicted.

It’s like music, i can listen to my ipod for the entire day, but nobody has said it is a bad thing, nobody said I am addicted.

For men, sex is also addictive, the only thing that keeps them from being addicted for a long time is whenever they reached an orgasm, they need rest, and tend to stay away from it.

If women had the same sex drive as men, we would be satisfying ourselves all day long, because women doesnt need rest in between orgasms.

  • This is such a lame article if you could even call it that. Also if the kid was addicted how the hell can he just toss his ps3 away? did he cure his addiction overnight, yeah right give me a break. All these articles just dilute the image of the normal gamers out there just trying to have a little fun. And of course he is going to play with hew ‘NEW’ playstation for an extended period of time that what kids do! they play with their new toys. I’d say the kid must have some other unknown condition as well seeing as I’m sure there have been many many more people pulling marathons that have never suffered these mental detachments. LAME!!!

  • I agree with Goda. I mean I can go on and play a game for about an hour, be content w/ choice to spend that time on the PS3. On the other hand, I can get sucked into playing for about 4 hours, if given the chance. The trick is to discipline yourself so that you keep that balance, like Luke Skywalker. Get that balance, and you will be able to enjoy what you want to enjoy. If you do not keep that balance, you end up losing it, and falling of the edge like this Italian boy. Oops!

  • Thats Fuckin Bull Shit………u used tampon eating D Bags
