The BlackBerry Storm is now available and this is the day that countless CrackBerry addicts have been waiting for. At least until they read all the lackluster reviews about their supposed Jesusphone slayer. (Speaking of reviews…anyone see a super positive one?) Many Verizon locations are opening early today for the important launch so if you’re BlackBerry thumbs are itch’n for some touchscreen action, we’ll excuse you for a few hours.
One thing I noticed in the commercial is how dumb the keyboard layout is when the phone is vertical. Once you go horizontal then it is alright; something I wish the iPhone 3G would do for text messaging instead of just Safari.

Well, I waited to give the phone my personal evaluation and I have to say it is the best non-iPhone so far. RIM marketed this phone really well. They built up the hype and many people including myself became curious. The problem is the hype is better than the actual product. I own a Motorola Q and my carrier is Verizon Wireless. I am not happy with it and the battery is going fast. So, I waited for the Storm.
The Storm is a let down. I think it is due to Verizon and their limitations on hardware. Maybe there will be some updates to improve the software and functionality of the phone. It was slow and did not respond quickly to my rotations. I think RIM will issue quite a few software updates over the next year or so.
I am like many people out there. I like Verizon’s coverage and I want an iPhone. AT&T sucks! I think Verizon and Apple made a huge mistake on not getting together for the iPhone. HUGE! I do not think Verizon will recover from this blunder. The Storm is a good phone but the iPhone just crushes it. Wow! The Storm is not going to pull off the upset. RIM will have to listen to all of there customers and respond quickly in order to compete with the iPhone. The phone should have WiFi. Verizon just puts too many unnecessary barriers on the phone. What a waste of time! I am done with Verizon. They do not care. Ego’s got in the way of getting the iPhone on the Verizon Network and one CEO (Jobs) is laughing while the other, Lowell McAdam is crossing his fingers on the Storm. I will let him sleep a little longer before I break his heart. Oh No…he is a sleep in the Matrix…nevermind. He will never wake up.
FierceWireless: You mentioned the iPhone. Do you have any regret passing on that?
McAdam: None whatsoever.
FierceWireless: Why not?
McAdam: When we evaluate a product we look at the customer experience. We look at the technology of it and we look at the financial model around it. From a customer perspective we didn’t like the restricted distribution. We didn’t like the fact that we were being asked not to service customers. Let’s just assume the model you see from AT&T is what they asked us to do, so I’m not divulging anything. We have a huge network of stores and we put a lot of investment into training our people. The model was to say to a customer ‘thanks for coming in, now go down the street to Apple and they’ll take care of you.’ We didn’t like the customer model. The technology was stuff that could have been dealt with.
The financial model, if you assume the financials that the European countries have said publicly what theirs was, we’ve made a $40 billion investment in our network in the last eight years. I don’t think that revenue split was commensurate with the investment we made in the network. We are very happy with that decision.
As we roll out the Voyager, we are going to be happier. The Voyager takes things to the next level.
