I took some shots of 2.2 in action. The walking directions would have been great for the past two weeks – I’ve had so much trouble using car-based GPS in walking/biking cities. Streetview is also great for cities like New York but it’s very limited right now – there was no information for Paris, for example. The podcast download is also really nice to have. An impressively end-user-oriented update by Apple this time around.

Copy and paste?!??!
The browser changes are definitely amazing, I love this. There’s less wasted space and it seems a bit snappier, although it’s possibly due to just the restart or even my imagination.
Deleting an application now brings up a window that let’s you rate it by simply selecting the number of stars, this should help the rating system a lot because if there are issues with something, you’ll not only delete it, but you’ll also make the issue known.
I especially like this typo in the iTunes Podcast section ;)

The 2.2 firmware of WHAT?
Not really an update about the 2.2 iphone software update – more just Google Maps.
More description please!
Where is Street View on the ipodtouch? Looks like we’ve been forgotten.
Yeah, I wondered that myself, I couldn’t find any street view places?
AH, it looks like the iPod Touch didn’t get the Street View features – http://www.tuaw.com/2008/11/21/apple-also-releases-iphone-os-for-ipod-touch-2-2/
That’s ok. Streetview is overrated. Cool, definitely, but otherwise a colossal waste of money.
Thanks Apple…..for giving us features that almost noone has asked for and completely ignoring MMS and copy and paste.
pleasefixtheiphone.com
That site (pleasefixtheiphone.com) is discouraging. MMS and the ability to sync via WiFi or 3G is unimportant to me. The most important stuff appears on page 3 and beyond.
Give me a mail search feature, and the ability to bulk mark as unread. The mail app needs a bit of an overhaul in general.
Anyone else notice the Google Search application go to the older version without voice to speech searching when they did the 2.2 update?
I had to delete the application and download it again – not a big deal, but thought I’d post that it happened to me.
I just tried the updated to 2.2 via iTunes, and it bricked my phone!! It said “Updated failed” and now my phone won’t start up. Even a full restore fails. What to do??
Is anyone else annoyed with the picture messaging. So annoying to have to access the web and type in passwords and such just to see a picture. Please fix this asap.
There’s definitely Street View data for Paris.
I just bought an iPhone and the podcast feature is a real disappointment. I have been using a Nokia N95 until now and have gotten used to downloading podcasts to the phone. But now I have to download the podcasts when I am home, and can no longer download them on the go.
Glad this is out. Maybe now they can shift their focus to features customers are asking for, like MMS. I make the case here: http://blog.mcmanus-family.com/2008/09/the-case-for-mms-on-the-iphone.html
Interesting improvements with the majority being focused on flashiness (except the REAL Flash support of course) and security (which is always a plus). It’s time for Apple’s iPhone engineers to spend some time on functionality such as the 1st comment of this post states, copy & paste. Another inexcusable flaw is the inability to send MMS…come on Apple, 2009 is around the corner and we can’t send MMS on the best device you got! Not cool!
Having said that, I’m off to have it applied on my iPhone as well. :) Have a great night!
Great improvements!
Oh btw

I noticed that Safari is working much better. It used to stall out when pictures were loading. Now it is much easier to scroll while a site is loading. Far fewer inadvertent clicks. So far no Safari crashes. Very nice.
No streetview!
