Short Version: The $99-after-rebate Quickfire from AT&T is an appealing alternative for the Sidekick crowd, but the promotion of AT&T’s music features without including earbuds or even some sort of adapter for the proprietary connector a real head-scratcher.

Pros:
The Quickfire is aimed at younger generations of text-happy kids and, thankfully, it excels in pretty much every aspect of the messaging department. Whether your favorite means of word transference is IM, e-mail, or text messaging, the Quickfire handles each with ease. Conversely, if you’re one of those people who still prefers to actually talk on the phone the Quickfire makes clear calls, so you’re covered there, too. The QWERTY keyboard is spacious and easy to use, though the keys are a bit flat.
Most of the other features – the HTML browser, the 1.3-megapixel camera, the touchscreen, and the battery life – are all average to slightly above average, but the real story is that they’re all included for $99. As the phone is marketed towards kids, though, most of the action is in the messaging features. The rest is a nice bonus.
Cons:
The touchscreen, while nice to have on such an inexpensive phone, seems to have some issues with responsiveness. Scrolling up and down web pages induces a bit of lag from time to time and I found myself having to double or triple tap menu items every now and again. It’s not bad enough to steer anyone away from the Quickfire, it’s just something to consider. Finger scrolling will take some getting used to, as well, because it’s upside-down compared to most phones. Take the iPhone, for instance: sliding your finger up the screen makes a web page scroll down. Same with most other touchscreen phones. On the Quickfire, however, you slide your finger up to make the browser and menu items scroll up, and down to make everything scroll down. It sounds more logical, in theory, but it feels weird and takes time to pick up.
The Polaris HTML web browser is a valiant attempt and a nice addition to such an inexpensive phone, but unfortunately it’s too slow and renders many popular sites too awkwardly for any serious surfing (note the cut-off labels and weird font sizing in the Gmail screenshot below). It’s nice to have in a pinch, though.
The biggest issue with the Quickfire – and one that could easily be fixed – is that it’s touted as a music-friendly phone, yet there are no included headphones and no 2.5- or 3.5-mm headphone jack. There’s a proprietary connector (see below) on the top of the device that’s used with the included charger, and adapters to change the connector to a 3.5-mm headphone jack can be found online for under $20, but such an adapter isn’t available on AT&T’s site, nor is it included in the box. If you’re going to push music features, you have to give people some way to hook up headphones besides the Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth music headphones aren’t cheap.
Recommendation:
If you don’t mind doing some extra legwork for a headphone adapter and you don’t need to use the web browser all that much, the AT&T Quickfire is a good, affordable option for a younger crowd that loves to send text messages, IMs, and e-mail.

I have had my quickfire for a little over 60 days now. Guess what? It crapped out! Over heats and screen has locked up! This is obviously is a horrible phone that AT&T has purchased from UTStarcomm. When you call Warranty Care which is handling the “recall” or any warranty issues for the Quickfire they are offering the following phones . . .

Now Don’t get me wrong YOU DO NOT have to pay that price, These are the posted prices for these phones in the AT&T store. DO YOU see anything wrong so far? Why is it that WE ARE BEING OFFERED a lesser phone? This doesn’t make sense to me.
I did not like any of the phones being offered so I asked if I could purchase the Samsung Eternity. Now this one is $149. I offered to pay the additional $50 (even though AT&T is not offering to credit me $50 for a lesser phone) However this is NOT an option. OK now I have been on the phone with AT&T Customer Care for about 20 min. The Warranty Care for about 30 mins and have finally driven to the AT&T Store. I’m just tired at this point. I said forget it! Just give me the Eternity and I will pay the $149 and forget the Quickfire – SORRY MA’AM you are not eligible for an upgrade until 2009! WHAT?

OMG..I called yesterday and got the same offered! i was pissed and said the same exact thing. I paid 200 dollars for mine and its just 2 days pass the 30 days return policy and now they are offering me a cheap ass phone. I was like well i paid for this phone not knowing that it was going to be crap and now u guys want to replace it with a lesser value phone? Ok, anyone who has this phone and gives a good review about is must not have had it for over a month or two. It is garbage. This phone is nothing more than a cheap prototype that fails to satisfy a customer for more than a month. It can be very laggy, the screen develops ripples in it after a while out of nowhere, it is extremely bright and that can not be altered, and the calibration of the touch screen changes at random times. It is an ultimate waste of an upgrade do not waste your time with this phone.
Buy a better phone in the beginning next time. Don’t get mad at AT&T for finding a cheap solution for cheap users. You do get what you pay for.

when the quick fire first came out the reviews were great. now we have 3 quickfires and I have the eternity. I would expect better performance from a $49.00 phone. The eternity is fine. I have not had any trouble at all, but the Quickfire is not only a serious pain in the *** but the service from AT&T is even worse. they want everybody to think they are the only one with a problem and then expect you to be happy with a cheaper phone. I am done fighting ignorant operators. It is time to contact the BBB Better Business Bureau

I bought 2 quickfires around xmas time and it cost be $300 total for both. It was good for the fisrt month. After that, the phone has been nothing but a pain. The screen is unresponsive, the calls are constantly dropping, it deletes text messages and the list goes on and on. I called several times and I was told that when my phone freezes up I need to reset my phone to the factory settings each time! This means I will lose all my ringtones, pictures, text msgs AND they will NOT reimburse me back for what I have paid! They said that people have compained about it overheating, but not about the touchscreen or calls dropping which is a total LIE! Therefore they say that I am not eligible to get a replacement for them. So I am going to call in a few days and say the phones caught in fire! haha And here’s how great the company is…..they will replace your phone with not only a cheaper phone BUT a refurbished one!!! So I pay $300 for two brand new phones and in return I get a piece of garbage (that they stopped selling after 1 month on the market) and they will replace it with a cheaper, used phone! How is that logical to anybody!?!?!? So I said if they give me $100 credit for the phone I would put it towards a phone that I actually liked and they said no and if I want a phone other than the ones they offered, I would have to pay FULL price which are over $200-$300each !!! But its $175 to cancel each line. They are so stupid there!
I agree. I bought the quickfire. Liked the phone if were to actually work right. My biggest problem is that I rarely had service on the phone. Spent so much time on the phone with att. They told me I was available for an upgrade. I said “that was my upgrade!” He said they were recalled and I should pay the $50 for the insurance replacement of upgrade. I gave up and went back to my old phone. I think we should all be reimbursed the money we spent. It’s too bad, I liked the phone but it never worked. I guess i’ll call them again and maybe they will replace it with something else.

I can tell you that now that it is 2009 and they have updated the phone, it’s amazing. Only idiots buy a phone when it first comes out. There is always problems with at least the frist 5 months of a new phone being out. They work to fix the “bugs” then release a better one.

I just got the phone earlier today, so I can’t tell you much. I can tell you a few things though
The camera works well to me. I wouldn’t use if you were a professional photographer, but it is great for using it just to take random pictures of friends and family. Or other random things.
As far as the battery, I can’t really say. The last phone that I had had a great battery on it, but I hated the whole thing because it was old. This one has not been too bad. I tend to use my phone a lot for random things, like bluetooth, calls, and notes. I have had the battery charged since 4. It’s now almost 12 and I still have 1/3 of the battery left. But I did A LOT with it today. I doubt it will go so fast if you don’t do too much with it. I had to turn it off a lot today too. So, that will help out with the battery. Either way, I think that it will work well as long as you aren’t CONSTANTLY on it.

It is not hard to use at all, it is very easy to navigate and the touchscreen is quite responsive in my opinion. It get’s good service, AT&T has the best coverage in the nation. Camera isn’t the best, but it is decent for the price. I think it is reliable. It should last 3-4 years. Hope that helped. :)

this is ok, it gets worse over time though. the keys fade after alot of texting.
1. its not that hard to use, the icons make it very user friendly. (:
2. the service is great, the volume on the phone is loud, but clear. reception is very good.
3. the camera, basically, sucks. it takes literally 5 seconds after pressing the camera button to actually TAKE the picture. the camera also has to be completely still. one little flinch messes up the whole picture.

Its ok, but it doesn’t support http://www.pandora.com – other at&t phones do, but this isn’t one of them, too bad. It would be nice to synch phone to pc, but I’ll have to purchase a separate cable, really at&t… Touch screen is lacking, lots of double/triple taps, but I love the key board.

i got the matrix and it was broken so i exchnged it for the quickfire. i liked the matrix sooooo much more because:
*the touch screen never works
*has a bad battery life
*very slow when opening things

well my “shine” works differently than most for some reason then. For instance. I can set my own tone for my texting but when it has a certain type of sound to the song it doesn’t accept it. Now I know how you feel about the texting and i would like to have better features for it and would like to be able to skip to the next character without accidently pushing “send”.

I heard it has demo games for jewel 2 and brain challenge and the full version of sudoku which i love. The camera is ok for the price and the battery life is about 3 hours of talklife and 12 for standby. I’m hoping I get this phone for christmas! :)

I think the stan-by time for the battery is about 12 days and the camera is ok for its price and i dont know too much about the games. The phone is just above normal but it isn’t really big either.

Chris, look on ebay, i found alot of them on there. im getting this phone for christmas, my mom already told me see got it for me, i have wanted this phone since it came out, im already on ebay buying screen protectors and clear silicone cases, lmao. people this phone is amazing, who cares if the touchscreen isn’t as responcive as you want, because its pretty responsive. take care of the phone. & btw, the touchscreen is responsive, i would know because i sit in at&t and play with the phone 24/7.

I have been looking at millions of reviews, and today is christmas eve, I have been telling my mom I want this phone and tomorrow is Christmas I really think this is a great phone I’ve seen more pros than cons on it. my sister and i love our quickfires! they are awesome phones for the price that they are. we just have one problem with them. we wanted to make our own ringtones by taking music off of our computers and putting them on our sd cards or simply transferring the music from our old phones to the quickfire via the sd card. but when we put the card in the phone it doesn’t show any music available on the sd card. can anyone help?

the battery life stinks. although it says it lasts for 12 days, it barely lasts 4 hours. it really bites.
lagging isnt too bad. occasionally a couple seconds of, but not very noticable..

I think the battery life is wonderful. It isn’t, of course if you’re texting, calling and web browsing throughout the day — but if I’m only using the phone occasionally, its battery stays for days and days and days — much better than the RAZR that I used to have
For the ringtones… can you set music as a ringtone, and as a text ringtone… I heard the screen is not very good at responding to touch…

I got the quickfire the first day it came out…it took some time to get used to the touch screen because i’ve always had normal blackberrys but if your a text freak like i am, this phone is perfect for you. I’m 17 and am constantly on my phone, texting. its very afforadble (with a upgrade) and is a all-around good phone. it does have a little bit of lag occasionally (in spurts) when you go to touch a app and it taks a few seconds to come up or not at all, but if you keep touching it, it eventually does. i use the web browser and thinks that works perfectly…all around good phone :)

I bought 4 Quickfires for Christmas. In less than a week 2 of them have bad screens. One displays with a split screen. The other display is now grey/brighter no black and you can now see the dots that make up the image/text.
I went to the ATT store to compare screens. Yep, mine screen is bad! That’s two out of 4 phones! I ask the sales guy about anyone else returning their Quickfire because of display problems and he confirmed my suspicions. I am not the only one having problems with this phone. Can you say “RECALL!”

There is a big technical error on this phone…if you go into Menu, Settings, Display, and then Style, the full calendar that you have the option of using on the Display HAS THE WRONG DATE, and there’s no way to fix it. The regular calendar in the Organizer area has the correct date.
Today it says that the date is Tuesday, Jan. 14…rather than Wed. Jan. 14.

I kinda regret getting this phone although i love the full keyboard! thats about the only thing good for it. i have lost service going certain places and i dont like the fact that i have to triple tap something so much.. the camera sucks. and the biggest thing is that mine screen has already went out. it hasnt been dropped or damaged in anyway. it started with the screen not working now and then when it was shut so u would have to slide it open to do anything so u could see. then a few days ago it completely quit working open or not. and i have only had it since novemvber. they are sending me another bc of the warranty so ill see how it works.

I got this phone 3 weeks ago and I thought it was going to be a really good phone, until I actually started using it. The touch screen sucks.. just like every person basically said I had to tap about 3 times in order for it to work. And the camera is really bad too. The quality of the pictures is horrible. If you text alot like I do the battery dies really fast. When I would leave my phone in my purse it would get tapped buy other things and unlock and start dialing numbers.. not good. i just had to replace my old one that i had for 2 months never been dropped no scratches. it locked on me froze on me everytime i would try to text,
and the new one i just got 2 weeks ago is doing the same thing,
I say go for the quickfire, im getting it in a week or less.
I have the palm centro and i love it, the only down side is that the keys are rubber and really close together so i have to use my fingernails when i text(and i text alot) so i was wondering how the quickfire was.but now i dont think i really want it because of the problems its been having.so i guess i’ll wait till at&t comes out with a better phone!

Ok I am getting a new phone. And I want to get the quickfire and i waz wondering is it worth getting???? I had the blackberry peral and i hated it and im always texting so im just wondering is it worth getting as my new phone. Can u help Please and Thank-U.
i havent got it yet but i looked at it at at&t store and seems it will be great for texting the spacing on the keys seemed nice when i messed with it.
the phone is a nice phone but like the camera is not that good. when i talk on the phone the battery dies really fast. the texting is good. and everything else is pretty good.
should i get this phone or the pantech matrix i cant decide….and what color should i get mi phone in?
you should totally get this phone i have it and i love it! it is awesome for texting and the touch screen is really resposive! alll in allll it is AWESOME! I LUV THE QUICKFIRE!
