Surprise, surprise. The underpowered nettops aren’t selling so well. Sales are lagging so much that Asus is benching the Intel Atom for the more powerful Celeron CPU in an upcoming Eee Box release. The hard drive is also getting bumped to 120GB from 80GB. Overall, Asus still sees a future over this mini-desktops with 100,000 – 200,000 selling this year and over a million next as it the computer enters new markets. To bad nettops are still sorely underpowered by today’s standard.

Underpowered? Yes and no. It depends on what you are using it for. For around $250 with OS these Celeron based Eee Box’s will finally be able to play HD quality video and run emulation software for a variety of gaming systems. At just around 2.5 lbs with low energy consumption and virtually no noise, these units are quite a deal. I mounted it on back of my Plasma and with wireless mouse and keyboard I am surfing the web and playing games + watching movies from my couch. Optical drive? Don’t need it. It has several memory card slots on board for inserting digital photos from a digicam. The wireless N on board also allows me to transfer files to my Plasma screen from any computer.
Don’t knock it until you try it. I think these nettops are amazing for the price. Look for a sub $200 Eee Box by the end of 2009.
