I find it humorous that you say some people mistakenly compare the RED to the 5D Mark II and then wind up doing that near the end of the article.

I can confirm the nature of the moire issue from my own testing, which was completely different from this. One thing I did was to tilt a camera with respect to a pattern producing maximum moire to see if there would be a break anywhere in the moire pattern, indicating a departure from the every third line idea. There was not. The moire pattern was consistent across the frame.

That said, if videographers are cognizant of their subjects, they can shoot with the 5D II material that does not produce this moire. Note that only horizontal lines (and near horizontal) are so affected.

The 5D mark II is undoubtedly not great at test charts - the RED 1 is fat better.

But do you really want to shoot test charts !

Use the 5D for what it is best at - stunning low light performance, interchangeable 35mm lenses and has a gorgeous DOF with it's full frame sensor.

When you want to shoot test charts use the RED 1.

It's hilarious that RED feel so threatened by the sudden arrival of the movie shooting DSLRs that they need to put this kind of material.

While not deceptive (it makes a valid point) - it ignores the larger story.

if the 5dmk2 is so bad, then the RED people should not be so worried about. The problem is that the 5dmk2 is far better than the scarlet, also the RED cameras are really bad in low light.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment... I totally agree that the MkII will probably improve, and DSLR video will improve as well, but they're just in different leagues. I'd LOVE to have a 5D MkII and I'd shoot video with it happily - but if I was a professional cinematographer I'd avoid it like the plague.

Hi, nice review over the image. Sad that this was a screen grab in JPEG format and not at least 4-5 sec of video footage. This can be apart from what everyone believes and analyzed a RAW processing error. While being at the market for so long everyone knows that advanced technology doesn't comes without glitches. The same famous RED team is mostly famous of their firmware upgrade (in the normal world called beta testing) and the fixing/adding new features to the camera. Still they forget that this also is a new product and is NOT as they claim (or would like to put it) a final and unmodifieable product. Canon MKII is yet to have firmware updates, is yet to see what future will bring to it. Is a 2600$ camera and is available now. And so far almost 90% of the footage from Canon 5D MKII seems "incredible" 8% are "video" and only at 2% I can say that some real artifacts have been spoted. The same goes for the not so long state of the art HDV - where the limitings of the codecs gave artifacts at certain scenes. I just can't wait to get it at my photo dealer and give it a ride - If what I shoot would look good (as I'm definetly sure will be) I'll simply get one. Best Regards, and happy shooting!
