The entry-level Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 Arcade, now officially has 256MB of internal storage. (How could something unofficially have 256MB of storage?) That means those of you who spring for the $199 360 won’t have to shell out an additional $50 for a memory card. All your saves and downloaded content, as much as you can fit on 256MB, will forevermore be stored internally. It does, to be sure, increase the value of the Arcade SKU.

No, you won’t be able to download movies and TV shows to such a small device, but games like Street Fighter and Banjo-Kazooie will fit just fine. Having just downloaded Banjo-Kazooie, I’d recommend it to any of you looking to play an old school platformer that, amazingly, uses a color palette beyond 30 shades of brown.

Well, if somebody opened up his 360 and wired in 256 megs of memory internally himself, that would be unofficial.

However, I am more confused about the small space.

Honestly, this makes no sense 256 megs? You can get very very high end 1GB of flash memory for under $10, an thats CONSUMER price, a manufacturer buying 1GB chips in bulk probably wouldent even be charged $1 each for them.

Why did they go with such a low number?

  • The arcade used to come with a 256MB memory card, so there isn’t much added value. in fact, it’s a little bit of a downgrade seeing how you can’t put your XBL Profile on the MU and take it to a friend’s house anymore.

  • I am new to all this gaming stuff. My husband has the original xbox and wants the 360. With this new memory can he play the old xbox games on the 360? Thanks

  • No, he can’t play old xbox games on the xbox 360 without a hard drive attached to it.

  • So I would have to buy the 360 with the 60 gig hard drive? THanks for your help

  • He doesn’t have the 360 yet, that’s what I’m asking, is the 20gig good enough to play old games on? Thanks

    • Hey guys, I was just wonderin’, If i got an xbox 360 arcade then bought a hard drive for it i know i could play regular xbox games, but would i have to download anything extra like, just for the xbox games on the list?

  • Yeap, 20 gigs are more than enough to play legacy xbox games.

  • So with an arcade, if we buy a hardrive, will we be able to play Xbox games on the 360 arcade?

  • 256 MB is a joke, there can’t be that much difference in cost between sticking in 1GB of memory

  • Hey if i have the Arcade.. can i use one of the wireless XBox 360 adapters to play Live or FIFA online?

  • I just bought the Xbox 360 Arcade version TODAY (11/1/09). it is awesome. I had an old Xbox 360 with the memory card, but here’s what I noticed as an improvement over that version:

    * The old version with the separate card would NOT let you download and save Xbox Live games to it. However, the new Xbox 360 Arcade with the 256 megs of space onboard allows me to save FOUR Xbox Live games: Banjo Kazooie, Geometry Wars 2, Small Arms and Puzzle Quest.

The reason why Xbox did not make it 1 gig is because they just want folks to get a TASTE of what it would be like if they PURCHASED a hard drive. Everyone knows that!

If it was a gig, NO ONE, accept those REALLY into downloading and storing videos would buy a hard drive; hard drive sales would drop. A drop in sales would mean higher priced games.

Microsoft would need to make up the loss somewhere.

But, I digress, the 256 meg internal memory is great for someone like me that does not plan to download or buy lots of Xbox Live content.
