I just bought the Xbox 360 Arcade version TODAY (11/1/09). it is awesome. I had an old Xbox 360 with the memory card, but here's what I noticed as an improvement over that version:

* The old version with the separate card would NOT let you download and save Xbox Live games to it. However, the new Xbox 360 Arcade with the 256 megs of space onboard allows me to save FOUR Xbox Live games: Banjo Kazooie, Geometry Wars 2, Small Arms and Puzzle Quest.

The reason why Xbox did not make it 1 gig is because they just want folks to get a TASTE of what it would be like if they PURCHASED a hard drive. Everyone knows that!

If it was a gig, NO ONE, accept those REALLY into downloading and storing videos would buy a hard drive; hard drive sales would drop. A drop in sales would mean higher priced games.

Microsoft would need to make up the loss somewhere.

But, I digress, the 256 meg internal memory is great for someone like me that does not plan to download or buy lots of Xbox Live content.

256 MB is a joke, there can't be that much difference in cost between sticking in 1GB of memory

The arcade used to come with a 256MB memory card, so there isn't much added value. in fact, it's a little bit of a downgrade seeing how you can't put your XBL Profile on the MU and take it to a friend's house anymore.

"(How could something unofficially have 256MB of storage?)"

Well, if somebody opened up his 360 and wired in 256 megs of memory internally himself, that would be unofficial.

However, I am more confused about the small space.

Honestly, this makes no sense 256 megs? You can get very very high end 1GB of flash memory for under $10, an thats CONSUMER price, a manufacturer buying 1GB chips in bulk probably wouldent even be charged $1 each for them.

Why did they go with such a low number?
