Verizon rolls out Storm OS update, still isn’t going to help
by Peter Ha on December 5, 2008

Bonnie Cha over at CNet has the scoop on the Storm OS update we’ve all been waiting patiently for over the last two weeks. If you actually bought this girnormous piece of poo then you can update using the Desktop Software Manager or wait for the OTA that’s said to be going out at 12:30 AM EDT. Regardless of what this update can do, I won’t be changing my review of the Storm. It really is the worst device RIM has put out on the market and I love BlackBerrys.

  • I haven’t used the Storm much, but I did get a chance to play with a demo unit briefly a few weeks ago.

I expected to hate it, because I don’t care for the touchscreen on the iPhone - yes, there are those of us who don’t like tapping glass to dial a phone. But I generally found the device to be easy to use, and didn’t have any problems using it to text message and dial. I was pleasantly surprised.

Again, don’t know much more about it than that. But definitely appreciated finding a touch screen I didn’t walk away frustrated from using.

  • I got my Storm monday, and even though there have been some minor problems (lagging) I think this phone is great! I think people are just trying to hate on RIM because they aren’t Apple, and there are more Apple fanboys than RIM fanboys.

  • huh..works fine here. I leave it on 24/7 (only phone) and I use the media, Net, three mail boxes, gmail, camera and gmail cal sync….no issues at all.

  • Thats pretty harsh isnt it? Ive seen a bunch of websites, even the verizon hating BGR say that the update is a HUGE step in the right direction… I think its worth taking another look at.

  • I got one and absolutely hated the screen. I’m no iPhone user, but the click to press STorm thing sucked - for me, anyway. Took it back after a week.

  • If your complaints are about the physical aspects (no WiFi etc) of the device that it is ok to say you will not change your review. If you are complaining about software/firmware bugs and they fixed them then you’re wrong to do so. Do you have the same stand on OS releases or the iPhone for that manner?

  • Jesus Peter, what is your problem with this phone? You’re my Gears of War brothern for god sakes. People’s complaints about this phone are fucking stupid and completely unlegit. A lot of it boils down to fanboyism. You either love or hate this phone, it’s as simple as that. I saw a you tube video of the OS with the new update and it’s amazing. No more lag, the accelerometer was instantaneous.

I cannot wait to receive this phone from the UPS delivery driver. The first thing I will do is go up to the fan-boys and …. COPY AND FUCKING PASTE!

  • You know what really grinds my gears? People who judge a device that is not yet mature. Give it about 3 firmware updates and then make that kind of comment.

    • haha I told thought of Peter from Family Guy when you said, “You know what reall grinds my gears?”

I couldn’t agree more though, if people look back the iPhone it fucking sucked until a couple firmware updates. It crashed, froze, it was horrible. I think the Storm has a lot of potentional.

    Storm is buggy for sure.
I am also worried about how long screen will last.
Saying we should not judge because it is not a mature product is just stupid. If you feel that way, good for you. Pay for being a beta tester. Most people are adopting early so they can no longer be an iPhone wannabee.

I have it from the first day. Not entirely happy with it.
Plan to get my $200 back and go back to my 8830 until it is a “mature” product. Thanks to you blokes who are willing to test for RIM and pay for it. When it is finally stable, I’ll come back and pay $79 after the newness wears off or something better comes out.

    • Good for you. People either love or hate the Storm. Have you even downloaded the .75 software yet? It’s made huge improvements for people.

What are your main complaints about it?
