Just a quick note: Seagate is cutting some hard drives warranty from 5 to 3 years which will take effect on January 3, 2009. If you pick one up before that date however, it will stay carry the longer warranty. No word if those years start after the purchase or if it’s when the drive leaves the factory, though. Models effected by the change after the jump.

There’s some strange news coming out of Seagate lately. They’re not investing in SSD, now they’re cutting the warranty on drives which should, by all expectations, be more reliable today than they were in the past.
For the best name in storage, this is strange. I always buy Seagate disks, and have never had to worry about the warranty because they always work. Since I doubt they’re going to stop working, it sounds like they’re taking proactive action to cut costs in the future. But why? And are they investing in technologies as-yet-unnamed in place of SSD? Or are they just letting the Intel’s of the world make the initial investments?
It sounds like a cost reduction manor – hopefully not in the quality of the drives…
Hard drives are cheap enough, it doesn’t hurt to replace them within a 3 year period with a newer, faster, higher capacity one. I’ve had two Seagate drives fail on me within a year but luckily the warrenty service is great.
