The PSP has had a good run, but Sony is ready to move onto the next generation according to EuroGamer.  The PSP will receive one more refresh with the PSP-4000 in late ‘09. It’s PSP2 after that. Details are not available about either the updated PSP or the successor as of yet. The last update of the PSP involved an updated screen (which is hated by some) and a couple of new buttons. The final update will probably have similar, minor bumps.

PSP2, huh? You have to imagine that Sony has been watching the iPhone’s success and game distribution method via the App Store. Maybe Sony will buck the traditional physical media and fully embrace digital downloads. Plus, a larger screen, some sort of touchscreen, and accelerometers will likely make the cut.

  • I think Sony has to do something pretty amazing for the PSP2 to really matter, with the flat sales of the PS3. I considered a PSP for awhile, but decided it was too much money for too little return.

  • I am rather not a fan of touchscreen controls for games.

Ever tried to play a FPS on the DS? Or an game that demands touchscreen and button controls at the same time? It’s a nightmare.

Please, let the PSP2 have normal controls, the DualShock hasen’t been really changed much since the PS1 era and people still like the controller. There is no need to force a change just because its popular or for the sake of change, look at the GameCube controller, that thing was a damn puzzle.

As or accelerometers, I canno’t think of a stupider idea for a handheld gamign system. Yeah, lets make a system whose primary purpose is to play games WHILE BEING HELD affect your controls based on how you are holding it…. great idea there.

“Maybe Sony will buck the traditional physical media and fully embrace digital downloads.”

Ha, keep dreaming. Digltal Downloads being the main or only source of getting games make even less sense for the PSP than they do for consoles. Some of the retail games are HUGE, 500megs to 1.7 gigs, and thats just for the PSP1.

And you know Sony will use Memory Sticks, which are extremely expensive, its not like they will go SD. People would fill up their PSP2’s memory in no time.

I for one would never support a DD-only system if it did not also have the option of physical media.
