Any news article, blog post or message board rant that uses the phrase “PlayStation family” should be teased mercilessly. It’s a weasel word borne of public relations speak.

With that out of the way! 1UP has taken it upon itself to defend the PlayStation 3 from so-called “mainstream” media criticism. (See: CNN Money, etc.) No, 1UP argues, the PS3 isn’t failing, and, even if it’s not doing as well as its fan(boy)s might want to see, it’s till got a lot going for it.

Sure, it’s a little more expensive than the Xbox 360, which can be had for as little as $199, but think of what you get: a Blu-ray player to play, you know, The Dark Knight in high-defition.

1UP also mentions that PS3 sales are some 60 percent higher than they were last year. That’s great and all, but 16 is 60 percent higher than 10. That is to say, a percentage increase isn’t nearly as impressive when you’re dealing with small numbers. (For the record, Sony sold 2.56 millions PS3s in the U.S. in 2007, so around 4 million this year; Nintendo sold 2 million Wiis this past November alone.)

I don’t know, all these sales figures analyses are fun in the abstract, but dwelling too much on them is sort of a waste of time.

  • Look at that controller up their it looks like it was friggin born in 1992……

  • It’s sad how a few years ago even one bashed the Game Cube and Xbox.

Now PS3 comes out everyone is just riding and forgetting how great a system the playstation is.

So why you doing it then!?!

  • “For the record, Sony sold 2.56 millions PS3s in the U.S. in 2007, so around 4 million this year; Nintendo sold 2 million Wiis this past November alone.”

Lets get this straight “for the record”.. the Wii sales are due to a complete different demographic group. It’s a little unfair to compare the sales of Wii to ANYTHING.. Refrigerators, toasters, you get the point… To say anything is failing because it “doesn’t sell as good as the Wii” is ignorant.

I personally own both a Wii and PS3. They are both completely different experiences and clearly aimed toward different audiences. I like them both for completely different reasons. Although I must admit, my Wii has a film of dust on it.

  • Popular opinion sometimes can equate to hype. The Wii is not as great as everyone makes it out to be (the novelty wears off). The PS3 is not as bad as everyone makes it out to me. Rock solid reliability, little big planet, God of War, MGS4, Resistance, plus a boat load of quality multi-platform titles. What more are people wanting?

    • Apparently what people are wanting is being delivered by the Xbox 360.

      • With the exception of a few titles, most the 360 multi-platform library is now identical with the PS3. Both the PS3 and 360 have their own exclusives now, and all of them are good. Of course in the beginning, the 360 had much better titles and a larger library of them (remember the 360 had a long head-start). Now things are evening out and the old tired arguments are no longer valid, or useful for argument sake. Well except the PS3 is more expensive, but even THAT can be justified.

Ok, so the PS3 doesn’t have Halo…. Ok, so the PS3 doesn’t sell as good as the Wii…

I am by no means saying the PS3 is better then the 360 or visa-versa. I am simply implying that the PS3 is not THAT bad as everyone is making it out to be. I own 360, Wii, and PS3. As someone who actually sees things from all angles, some of the arguments made are bogus imho…

    • funny comment above, reference god of war as a reason to have a ps3, it is still a year or two away.

  • Blu-Ray Player: built-in. Games MADE on Blu-ray discs. HD-DVD: No More. FREE ONLINE PLAY. Rock Solid Hardware.

..Enough for me. yeah and people need to stop comparing the Wii to any real gaming machine. plese keep it to 360, PS3 and PC. the Wii is a freaking joke that any real gamer wont waste the $ on. please.

  • I own both a WII and a PS3 (as well as 2 PS2’s, a PSP, an XBox and some older consoles). The PS3 gets more playtime than all other consoles combined followed by the PS2, the PSP and the XBox, all of which get more playtime than the WII. I am a 44 year old male and have a 17 and 11 year old son (my wife doesn’t play games). I believe the novelty of the WII doesn’t last long as most games are oriented toward young children. The PS3 will be viable for years to come. I can’t say that for the WII as it is on the same level as the PS2.

    • agree with you, I have two 360 in our house, and all my inlaws and even my sisters, have wii’s in there house, they get played a couple of times a year, when we go over for family gatherings, wii sports for while. Just this thanksgiving, we went to the sister inlaws, they bought the wii just for the weekend. Now the grandparents say they are buying one for xmas, so when people come over they can all play. My son and I got bored on the wii in a matter of a half hour.

  • Oh can you please stop mentioning the $199 difference in the cost?

PSN is free while Xbox Live costs $50 a year (if you by the 1 year subscription, otherwise even more expensive). In 4 years (at most, 2 if you buy the monthly subscription) the difference is gone and you get the blue ray player plus better hardware for free… and you can keep playing online for free while the xbox costs just keep adding up!

Do the maths, Crunchgear, do the maths…

  • You forget the ego of the Sony Pres at the beginning of all of this touting his Super computer of a gaming system and how they would blow everyone away. On the other side Nintendo used genius marketing and knocked Sony out of the ring. And please, you can be in denial and say Nintendo doesn’t count but they are the leaders of the industry and it will stay that way for several years. BTW i dont own a WII but I applaud their brains. Is Sony making any money on this yet or are they still selling at a loss?

  • I own a PS3 and Wii and am relatively new to both. So far I have found myself playing the Wii more. The Wii controllers add a very fun dimension that the PS3 cannot match. The Wii games are easier to get into. As an adult I find many of my friends also have Wii consoles(most of them have younger kids) so we get together for Wii bowling/boxing nights(excuse to drink with frineds). But then I also find myself playing these games on my own to get a little more polished. On the PS3 side I find some of the games more difficult to get into. COD4 I’ve alreadyt beat and when I go online I just get destroyed by a bunch of, what sounds like, 13 year olds. I do like warhawk, as it’s a very fun multi dimension game. but if you look at it’s graphics they are very unPS3 like. I’m sure some of my other games will gorw on me. But out of the Gate, I’m itching to play a few Wii games more than PS3 games. Kinda want to go home now and throw down on some Super Mario Galaxy. the fit adds a whole new level to gaming and actually feels more 3 dimensional even though the graphics are inferior.

ultimately both are solid systems and will be around for a while. But I do see Nintendo as a big player in all this and I’m sure Sony and Microsoft feel the same way. These are businesses and need sales. Nintendo is the clear front runner in that department and deservidly so.

    Mike

  • Mike try playng the Wii on a HDTV, it’s a freaking joke it looks so bad. not sure about you but i play games that push the graphics & effects to the limit, that’s next gen play, sorry but the wii is a kids toy not much more, they might be the leaders in the industry but that doesnt mean they have sh@! compared to the 360 & ps3 in terms of leading edge technology in hardware. Wii can keep there nintendo game cube graphics and a control that has 2 buttons. please. not a real gaming machine for real games. its a kids toy. haha.
