When opening my account I was emailed a user name/password which didn’t
work so I contacted newsdemon’s live support. Here is a transcript of
that first live service chat session:

Real name changed to “Curly Surmudgeon” for confidentiality.

Owen: Welcome to live chat support
Owen: Hello.How may I assist you ?
Curly Surmudgeon: Hiya.
Curly Surmudgeon: I just joined and tried to login with a 502 error.
Curly Surmudgeon: How long (timewise) does it take for my new account to be activated?
Owen: May I know the Member id/ User name ?
Curly Surmudgeon: Sure.
Curly Surmudgeon: confidential/confidential

Curly Surmudgeon: Are we still connected?
Owen: Yes please wait
Curly Surmudgeon: Roger.
Owen: It seems you have two accounts here
Owen: May I know the email id you used while signing up
Curly Surmudgeon:
Curly Surmudgeon: Weird, I just joined…
Owen: Please wait while i check for it
Curly Surmudgeon: I’ve just received _one_ confirming email from your bot with costs.
Curly Surmudgeon: Reference Number:
Owen: may i know the first name you used while signing up
Curly Surmudgeon:
Curly Surmudgeon: You’ve piqued my curiousity, are both accounts new or is there another “Curly Surmudgeon” subscribed to newsdemon?
Owen: We will get back to you through email within next 24-48 hours
Curly Surmudgeon: Uhm, does this mean I can’t login for 24-48 hours?
Owen: No we have to forward this issue to higher department they will take care of it
Curly Surmudgeon: Not a great beginning of a new relationship. I’m being charged for time I cannot use…
Curly Surmudgeon: You avoided my inquiry about the two accounts too.
Owen: We apologize for the inconvinience caused
Owen: Is there anything else that I can help you with?
Curly Surmudgeon: Yes, answer my question.
Owen: Sorry for the Inconvenience caused. I need to Forward this issue to our higher department. They will investigate on your account and get back to you through e-mail within next 24-48 hours.
Curly Surmudgeon: You’re still avoiding my question.
Curly Surmudgeon: What is the problem? I’m a systems administrator working in a number of *nix’s so don’t speak down to me.

Curly Surmudgeon: Then you hung up on me.
Curly Surmudgeon: I still do not have access to my paid account.
Owen: May I know the Member id/ User name ?
Curly Surmudgeon:
Curly Surmudgeon: Are you live or a bot?
Owen: Please wait while I look into your account information.
Owen: live.
Curly Surmudgeon: Why did you hang up on me?
Owen: I have reviewed your account it seems that your account working fine form our side.
Owen: It already set.
Curly Surmudgeon: I’ve not received an email notice as you promised.
Curly Surmudgeon: Why did you hang up on me?
Owen: When?
Curly Surmudgeon: Two days ago when we last spoke.
Curly Surmudgeon: I have a transcript, do you want a copy?
Owen: So now it has been set your account.
Owen: No
Owen: Now your account is working fine.
Owen: May be the mail has been went to spam folder.
Curly Surmudgeon: Why did you hang up on me and why did I not receive the email notice as you promised?
Curly Surmudgeon: No, not in my spam filter either.
Owen: When ever we fix the error of customers accounts we definitely sent a mail.
Curly Surmudgeon: Why did you hang up on me?

Immediately after this my newsdemon account was canceled without notice.
Repeated emails to support@newsdemon.com went unanswered. My credit
card has not be recredited.

Note the pattern of behavior, newsdemon ignores your questions, does not respond as promised, disconnects when politely pressed for a response and cancels your account when you do.

I strongly urge others not to patronize newsdemon.com

I’ve been using Newsdemon for awhile, and I have to say that the retention they claim is an undershoot.

On average, I get 200+ days of retention.

I think because they cannot verify this is the case with ALL the groups, they are not advertising it, but they are certainly way over the 175 days.

Been happy with them. Good deal for those looking for a great Usenet provider.

Hm, not a bad deal. I wish the retention was a bit longer though. Giganews is up to 240 days.

Wow, 175 days retention and 8 connections for $8 a month? That’s a good deal, but I get free usenet currently from my ISP. Although I’m limited to 1.5mb down, free is free.
