Carrier name doesn’t change…anyway..the phone now works with virgin mobile network
If you are in a contract with Optus they will unlock your phone for you officially and for free. I got my husband’s and my iPhone 3Gs unlocked, no questions asked.

They can unlock pretty much any phone within a minute. You just enter your make, model & IMEI number. They give you your unlock code
Virgin uses Optus network, so an optus locked phone will work fine with a Virgin SIM card.

People just love to “break” things. People know that apple at some point will actively try and prevent this sort of thing, right?
But sadly, most of the better and more useful apps are jailbroken ones.

No you can not run window programs but you can use other service provider like t-mobile with your iphone 3G
You can only use the Edge network. Plus you need a seperate GPS device.

No. It only works with GSM carriers. The only other US option is T-Mobile.
Hold down the on/off button and the home button together for 10 seconds and then release to restart your iPhone.
If it will not restart….you might need to restore to the 2.2 official version and then jailbreak again.
Restore with iTunes.
If your computer does not recognise your iPhone then you might have to put it into DFU mode to restore it. To put it into DFU mode, hold the on/off button and the home button together for 10 seconds, then release the on/off button, but continue to hold the home button for a further 20 seconds. While doing this, you will need your original SIM to activate the iPhone with iTunes again. It will be back at factory state, but you can restore your previous settings.

Who ever is using the late 2008 model Mac’s i ran into the following problem…
My phone has never been jailbroken and I am trying to do it for the first time. I get to the point where it says “Quickpwn is about to to run on your iPhone 3G.” and it does nothing from there. Just before that starts iTunes launches, says waiting for iPod, and gives me this error: “An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error has occurred (2001).” Then QuickPWN freezes.
Found this as the fix…
A FIX FOR THE LATE 2008 SILVER MACBOOK’S.
Grab a USB hub from your sisters bedroom. Then follow the steps as usual. The DFU mode block seems to only affect the MACBOOK ports only.

I installed the 2.2 2.28.00 from on my 16GB white 3Giphone but all this does not fly. I installed Quickpwn, it asked for the file to browse, I gave it one from apple. Once Cydia was installed, I added the package source location.. installed yellowsn0w 0.9.1 booted atleast 12times with atleast 8times of sim chip removal. Nothing! any chance anyone can give me some hints?
No 3G speeds because the frequency TMO uses for 3G is not supported by the iphone 3g. TMO’s 3G is not the same frequency as AT&Ts’.

If I’m not mistaken, running QuickPawn will replace baseband and make 3G unable to be unlocked. You need a clean 2.2 then use Pawnage tool then run yellowsn0w. Good luck, but no reason to do in US. Trading 3G for 2G at T-mobile. Better off buying a 2G iPhone off eBay.

How long should the QuickPwn tool take? My phone has been stuck on the black Apple start up screen for almost 45 minutes now, and all it does is flicker the screen every now and then.
I have no interest in unlocking the phone, all I wanted was access to more software.

Slr , it takes about 20 min’s to jailbreak your iphone, what you might need to do is fully restore your iphone from itunes and then follow the dev team’s quick pawn instructions again. make sure that the firmware your using is is the correct one. so if your firmware is 2.2 and you use 2.1 in your jailbreak process you will crash your phone .
What about for the people who doesn’t have a Mac ? (like myself…still waiting for the firmware v2.2 for windows)

I’m new to all this. How do I “run” yellowsn0w? I’ve got it installed. I reboot and no carrier. Re-insert SIM and it says “invalid SIM”. Something I’m doing?

from personal experience, feedback on the dev team site, and around the web it seems like the unlock only ‘works’ outside of the US. Generally speaking it WILL NOT work if you’re hoping to run the phone on an alternate US network (t-mobile would be your only option). In addition, it causes some issues that prevent you from even using an ATT sim card (regular or pre-aid, it drops the signal, can’t complete calls, sms, etc). So, not a good idea to install the unlock right now if you live in the States.
It’s sad how a lot of people don’t realize that yellowsn0w is still in beta!
Tried it with T mobile but did NOT work! I went thru all the right steps. Disappointed.

I have the Ip[hone 3g one version 2.1. I currently have a problem with it so I am going to apple to get it replaced. The 3g iphones in the apple shop are currently on version 2.2. If I get one of these can I use quickpwn 2.2 to jailbreak it and then use yellowsnow to unlockl. Please help as I ahve to visit the apple store today and I am thinking of just keeping the faulty phone as I need it unlocked!

Hey, I’ve had my iphone 3g (version 2.2, firmware 02.28.00) since christmas and still haven’t got it unlocked…so annoying! i jailbroke my phone using quickpwn and installed yellowsn0w 0.9.6 through cydia but unfortunately this did not unlock my phone for some reason (even after trying to reboot, toogleairplane mode on and off etc)…so i then i decided to maybe re-install yellowsn0w and try again. ive now installed yellowsn0w 0.9.8 but iphone is still not picking up coverage (still displaying no service!) this is annoying me so much and i really want to get my iphone up and running…any ideas of what i could do to fix this? any help would be greatful.
