The nice guys at NewsDemon just offered you guys a coupon for 50% off monthly service between now an next Wednesday. Why? Because they want to pull Usenet out of the file sharing ghetto and expand their audience to cool people like you (us).
How do you get the goods? Roll over to NewsDemon and sign up for a monthly service with the coupon “CRUNCHGEARRULES.” As long as you keep re-upping, you’ll get the discount for a year.
What can you do with Usenet? Well, besides the obvious hax0ring, Usenet is one of the largest worldwide forums in existence. There are plenty of groups for every prediliction and folks like Newsdemon are working on bringing the service into the 21st century to compete – and work with – with social networks and smaller forums. We’ll have a primer up soon but until then, give it a whirl.

“Because they want to pull Usenet out of the file sharing ghetto and expand their audience to cool people like you (us).”
That’s a bummer because that is the exact reason why Usenet is fast, efficient, and not chased after by anyone.
By the way, Easynews > *.

First time someone ever agreed with me on Techcrunch, so I had to come back and reply. More reasons Usenet rocks:
- You don’t need to install anything on your computer.
- You can do global search faster than any p2p platform.
- Your downloads are not dependent on other parties.
- (My experience:) Less corrupt files, security threats, etc.

The first rule of Usenet is you don’t talk about Usenet.
… but I’m sorta curious as to why Easynews gets such high ratings. I’ve never used it, I use Giga. What makes EN so hot?
Yes I agree Basar. Stay away cool people. We like Usenet the way it is. And <3 Easynews.
“Because they want to pull Usenet out of the file sharing ghetto and expand their audience to cool people like you (us).”
That’s probably why they advertise binary groups on their homepage. ;-)
Let’s not forget Usenet has the best pr0n.
Yes. That’s right…
I think it’s slightly irresponsible for crunchgear to be linking to their own page about piracy with links to specific nzb files and the like. The tech community knows piracy is a huge issue, and enabling people with specific examples is not a kosher practice in my eyes. There’s a reason there’s an underground, bringing mainstream media attention towards it is not that reason.
Awesome, now if they’d stop declining every card I’m trying to use. Yes, there’s money on it. No, I’m not having problems with charges through other providers. Yes, I’m a little bummed.
*shrug*
In other words – it seems like their payment gateway is fux0red to teh max atm.
I’m sure it will be fixed by next wednesday !
oh and be sure to hunt down SABnzb+
Spent 20 minutes with their live support. They’re sure it’s working. I’m sure they’re on crack. Tried 3 cards using Mac/FFox, Win/IE, Win/FFox, Win/Chrome. No dice.
But paypal works. Sweet.
My amex kept declining. I guess they don’t want my money. I’ll stick with giganews for max retention.
first rule of usenet… there is no usenet
I like my usenet just the way it is thank you. The last thing we need is the mainstream media/world catching on to what the internet’s underbelly really looks like.
Repeat after me…..”There is no usenet……”

can’t beat it by far the best
Some random company having a sale does not deserve a front page post on TechCrunch. Talk about spam. How much did they pay you guys for that?
Usenet rocks. I have not brought any software, music or movies for 4 years. I don’t want the fucking mainstream on usenet.
Usenet would be great if it actually existed, unfortunately it’s just another internet myth.

This doesn’t seem to work, when I register it does not ask me for my billing address, and then when it processes my credit card it fails. if anyone else is experiencing this issue let it be known!
I had a similar problem initially, but it works now. I’m in :)
Just got this in an email:
“On January 2nd, between the hours of 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Newsdemon.com experienced a critical error with their credit card processor which prevented succesful checkout for those who had attempted to pay via Credit Card.
We at Newsdemon.com have since repaired this issue, and we are happy to report that credit card methods of payment are now fully operational.
This had only effected those customers who attempted to pay by credit card only. All PayPal methods of payment, including PayPal transactions that are paid by credit card, are not related to and have not been affected by this error as they are seperate payment processors and systems.
The issue that caused this error involved a dropped communication between our server to our payment processor. No information gathered or stored on our servers were ever at risk of being compromised. The error solely caused an unsuccesful transaction.
At 6:00 PM today, after extensive testing, Newsdemon.com has taken measures to remove the error and prevent this type of error, allowing customers to checkout via credit card.
Any questions or concerns regarding this matter specifically can be directed via email at support@newsdemon.com. We apprecitate your patronage and greatly apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. ”
Looks like the problem is fixed now. Checked out with no problem this time around.
After shopping around, long term thinking, the Unlimited plan works out with the best savings.
Thank you, thank you. =)
I have to say, this is one of the spammiest posts I’ve seen on TechCrunch/CrunchGear. I saw this on the TechCrunch RSS feed and so I figured there must be something more to it. Unfortunately it is as it appears to be, just as another poster mentioned, some random company having a “sale.”
If you really want to look into Usenet, there are far better companies that you should take a look at and you really do a disservice to your readers that may not know any better.
Usenet is full of viruses, Don’t use it. It’s a nightmare
The internet is full of idoits, Don’t use it. It’s a nightmare
Here is a list of several Usenet providers offering discounts:
