We have information from a trusted source that the latest Palm smartphone running the Nova operating system will be launched Thursday. The new phone will have a full QWERTY keyboard that will slide down under a portrait-oriented touchscreen. We’ll have a mock-up shortly.
The new operating system is described as “amazing” and there will be a full software bazaar on launch. It will have media playback functions along with standard Palm calendar, email, and contact functionality.
As expected, the phone is described as “iPhone-like” and will probably be sourced by HTC like the Palm Pro. The official Palm announcement should happen this Thursday at CES.

Sounds good. If the OS is good I’m definitely getting rid of my iphone. The pompous aura apple gives off drives me nuts.
Very cool – don’t know if I’ve heard an Apple user talk like this before.
Maybe Palm DOES have a target market!
Yeah the UI of the iphone is currently best in class which is why I use it but I’m pretty sure there are more like me that would be willing to get rid of their iphones if they had a worthy alternative.
Also this phone will probably be coming to sprint which has much more reasonable pricing and faster 3G in my area.
I’d ditch the iPhone in a second if there was something truly competitive out there.
I second and third that.
I HATE MY iPhone. But unfortunately it’s the best thing out there. But not for long.
crApple can go to hell.
Its time for iPhone to rethink as its getting older by day… so let us see what is in store in the new palm… http://www.dabberdesign.com

please stop spamming your site.
Tell me about it. Apple sucks.
A lot of people actually don’t like how Apple does thing but stay with them because they are currently the best at what they do, there restrictions are just ridiculous. That’s why I have stayed with the iPod
@atm “If the OS is good ”
What about the apps or the availability of apps? Do you feel the number/quality of apps for the Palm compares to the iPhone? Do you feel the experience of finding/buying/installing apps for the Palm rivals the iPhone?
Second that. The app store is what makes the iPhone a must have. Without the apps, any competitor is just a phone…
Palm historically has had a lot of great apps free or otherwise. I agree that the app store is awesome but I’m pretty sure it can be done by palm and I’ll probably get a whole lot more utility out of apps that aren’t screened and stuck in a walledgarden.
Totally second the ‘pompous aura’ comment. The iPhone is a good device it just doesn’t match the claims made for it by iGod, and makes the hubristic 20-year-old Apple mistakes (e.g. 2G model needing a ‘3.5mm jack adaptor’). And I am convinced their MobileMe ‘live web demo’ was a fraud and would have been illegal/class-action-worthy in the UK!
Love my iPhone. Couldn’t care less about who else has one or how it affects my personal image.
I am eagerly awaiting to see this new OS and see how amazing it is. I used to be a Palm fan, but I think they have lost their credibility in being able to innovate for the past several years.
If the new Palm device has all the things on this wishlist, then Palm may have a comeback chance. See the wishlist here:
http://www.skratchboard.com/?p=203
While I agree with the last sentence of atm’s comment (btw, also an iPhone owner) I think that they have missed the opportunity to innovate and improve while they were “the original” smartphone producers with Treo.
It’s still not too late and for the sake of competition I hope their product kicks a$$. Consumers want to be able to choose from several equally good products which is not the case at this time.
Err, if that mock-up is anything close to the real deal, then this is DOA. Since the article claims a portrait screen, then I’m guessing that it is probably a mockup from a couple of years ago dreaming about a new treo.
Anyway, I’m really hoping that this is, in fact, great. Or at least nearly-great and an improvement over the existing treo’s. I’m not liking anything out there right now…
this is just a mock-up. Our source saw it but couldn’t take pictures.
you should replace your mock up with -

When will these OEM’s realize that standardization is not going to save them. It hurts them in the long run and it is definitely not going to save them. This is just Ed Colligan’s last attempt to say ‘he tried’ before the company continues to fall into the abiss.
http://tinycomb.com/2009/01/04/palm-new-release-nova/
I will be buying one!
I think slide out keyboards make a lot more sense in landscape more, a la the G1. Since HTC also makes that phone, and makes the Touch Pro, which has a slide out keyboard in landscape mode… I sure hope that’s how this one works as well.
When are other iPhone competitors going to realize it’s all about screen size.
I feel the same way. Screen size is vital. Love the look of new Treo Pro. Hate the small screen. Have 700p now – prior was 600p. I just can’t do without all the Palm features, which I look for when comparing to other phones – hoping to find SOMETHING similar, no luck.
Having a MacPro laptop, I would love to have the iPhone. If only the iPhone had something similar to the Palm feature set, I’d be there – it cannot even manage to have a simlar to-do list or even cut & paste, which when seen in action in the Palm, everyone would demand it.
My wish? If Palm could do and look similar to the of iPhone, and if iPhone could provide anything resembling the Palm features, that would be a wonderful thing.
IF only all phones had the Palm operating system OR ANYTHING SIMILAR – as standard equipment,
I would have a hell of a time deciding on a phone. As it stands, I can only hope anything new from Palm would rock ABSOLUTELY ROCK.
Sounds GOOD.
I guess this explains why Bono just threw a few million dollars into the kitty – I was scratching my head when I first read about that funding round!
It’s called chasing the loss.
How about this concept?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/44432840@N00/3142231559/
nice concept!
Yeah i like this design anyway, but the thing i hate is WINDOWS button on its keyboard against Palm Launcher on the screen :-|
Lets just hope this new OS is better than windows mobile
actually miss my Palm…
Yeah to date I havn’t had a phone with better battery life than my Treo.
Same here; the Calendar function on the iPhone is a toy compared to the Palm (and other devs can’t improve on it either by Apple rules !). I just wish that the contact manager function in Nova has busted the 12 (or was it 16) categories limit for filing contacts; that was getting restrictive.
Hopefully it’ll be available as an unlocked version so that I can get it up North.
Sounds to me like you should be replacing a BlackBerry not an iPhone. Must say that I use an iPhone, but have a physical calendar with me at all times, and access the web and such a couple of dozen times a day. That is the iPhone market…
Anyone have information on who the first carrier will be?
Probably Sprint, Sprint almost always gets Palm phones first. They probably won’t have a very long exclusive though, usually within a few months a couple of other carriers pick up Palm products.
Say what you want, but I love Palm product. To someone as abusive to phones as I am, iPhone is not an option (it would crack the screen the first week). BB Storm is not an option, since touchscreens don’t work for guys with big hands. Lastly, I simply like the ergonimics of most Palm phones. Google tried with G1, but try to get to the keys in the corners of the keyboard. Palm can keep things simple.
Give me something simple that functions as a good phone, syncs with Exchange, and does not crash with IMAP. That is all I want. If it can play MP3 fantastic. Nothing else, please!
Just my 2 cents.
You should se my iPhone 1.0! Prior to getting a wallet, I dropped the dang thing a half a dozen times or more. On concrete! Dents, but little more. There’s an odd rattle, so something is askew, but it has operated normally for a year since. The thing is durable in spite of its appearance.
Big hands aren’t really an issue. I have larger hands and as long as I don’t do too much marathon texting (whick causes a little discomfort in thumbs. Landscape mode would fix this). And every phone I’ve ever had has never lasted me more than a year. My beloved Treo included. I’m Rough on my equipment. My iphone has held up VERY well.
Even still, I’d love it if this phone delivered. I don’t like some of the missing features from the iphone (copy paste, mms, landscaoe text and email). As soon as a slick os comes out with the features I’m in!
I agree with the greek dude above
I had a Treo Pro for 3 weeks and hated it. I can’t believe Palm released such a crappy phone. The keyboard sucked ass.
They should make a WinMo Treo 750 that is as thin as the Treo Pro with rubber back, nicer screen, and the 750 keyboard. That is something I would buy in a heartbeat.
Fortunately, we are not talking about a WM phone here.
Palm’s dead. This is their last push.
Well, there’s always the Nokia E71 to go for if you hate the rah-rah behind the iPhone!
Interesting – l look forward to Thursday to see how it looks. Palm needs a hit to gain some market share.
wow i never knew there were so many dissatisfied iPhone owners. who knew?
I think it’s telling that people claim to hate the fan movement behind the phone, not so much the phone itself… yeah, it could be better in a lot of ways, but there’s not much to take shots at compared to other offerings available. (The calendar criticisms were totally valid though to be fair…)
That is a good looker for sure. I wouldn’t be seen dead with an iPhone in a business setting but this thing is all business. I hope Palm hits a home run on Thursday.
I am a treo user almost from the beginning. However, one reason why I like my Treo 750 is because of WM6. Not the best mobile OS (I would agree), but well integrated with Outlook/Office/Exchange, and very easy setup for 3g Tethering.
Debating going to TreoPro. I am very curious about this Nova design.
Question for the Geeks.
1) Is there a Gmail app for the iPhone that has an icon rather than using my freakin’ browser.
2) Would like to see Palm pull through. Just afraid my friend Jim Morrison from The Door’s set it best – “this is the end, my only friend the end”
1) not currently but you can enable pop3 for the iphone’s email client. That’s how I use gmail.
When are these Iphone competitors that what the consumer wants is a large screen, apps, and nothing but an Apple interface. Ever since the Iphone has been released there have been plenty of great operating systems…. But people don’t want it if it’s not Apple at this time so i don’t believe companies should even be trying unless they believe that they have a legitimate chance of taking the Iphone down once and for all.
This palm device doesn’t sound like anything special other than the operating system is really nice. “Iphone like”? Not going to work…. The Iphone killer can’t be like the Iphone but be unique and have nothing to do with the Iphone in my opinion.
Palm is dead no doubt, they will never be a iphone killer plain and simple & they will never be anything better than it, Why? if Apple where to open up the iPhone and set no restrictions developer would turn the device into crap plain an simple, just look at what people have done to the Windows mobile Platform, look at Vista and see how is crap cause of all these 3rd party companies making all kinds of stuff from bad drivers and all kinds of sh*t, and who do people blame at the end? the device.
did Palm get a deal on a time-space portal and someone forgot to tell them it is a little too late?
Вот про все это я почитал с огромным интересом. И прочитал бы еще больше! Планируете и дальше писать на эту же тему? Спасибо
i love my palm, just wish it didn’t come with software, it’s so stoopid : i should just be able to plug it in and it acts as a hd and i can drag things off, but no i have to load so much crap takes for ever and usually cuts out, also when you add old contacts from an old phone the contacts do not show up in text, you have to copy and paste or re save the contact to have it pull up to text.. but i do like using it normally, hope this one rocks.
Color me very skeptical.
http://mikecane2008.wordpress.com/2008/12/15/palm-revenge-of-the-nerdi/
But I *am* hoping Nova is a home run. I’m still using my rotten LifeDrive and can’t live without the PIMs. The PIMs are still world-class and can’t be — and haven’t been — beaten.
IF this has the form factor of the TX it will work. IF the new PALM OS has the flash of the APPLE products it will smash the iPhone to bits. IF IF IF!
Please, please, please, PLEASE let this be as good as it sounds!!! I switched from a Treo 650 (was on its last legs) to an iPhone 3G and I want my old Treo’s functionality back!
The make-or-break for me will be the browser… and I sure as hell hope it’s packing all the must-haves Treo Pro has.
Palm has got all their current early adopters using WM wiht their top fo the line phoens desinged in teh past few years. That is a steep but rewarding learning curve with lots of options, many very powerful third party programs on the shelf (standard GPS like TomTom and Garmin mobile versions), and the ability to tweak in order to get phone as modem, even phone as WiFi hotspot.
The remainder of their customers are low price driven, low demographics, very late adopter using centros and buying almost zero third party programs.
In the meantime Palm also has achieved a extremely bad reputation on multiple bugs, poor support and poor hardware reliability. IE this is not the Palm Inc you fondly remember (check their BBB rating: “F”).
So Palm has WM power-user technophiles, free Centro buyers, and a poor brand name and needs to go up against 800 lb brand gorilla Apple, HTC which is making killer WM hardware, and Rim BB which has a lock on enterprise.
Maybe they can take some Instinct buyers, but this is all quite uncompelling and about two years late.
>>>up against 800 lb brand gorilla Apple, HTC which is making killer WM hardware, and Rim BB which has a lock on enterprise.
Really, you state that as IF those are the only choices. They’re not.
I’ve used WM with PPC. Itr is Teh Suck. I’ll never use it again.
RIM BB? Me? Hahahahaha, etc.
Apple iPhone — yes, but since I’m so married to the Palm PIMs (which I repeat are STILL World-Class and have yet to be beaten), it leaves an opening for Palm STILL.
I hope to hell Palm pulls it off. Aside from iPhone, all the other choices are crap.
are you kidding me? there is no comparison between an iphone and a palm, i have had both, and use a treo now! an iphone is all play with a lil business, but a treo is the real deal, all business, functionality, with some fun stuff too! a phone shouldn’t be a playground, thats what your pc is for, apple spent too much time on the fun, and reputtion, not enough time on the stuff that matters, like choosing a good carrier to support their amazing product, or focusing on call quality. a phone should get the job done, and that what palm has been doing for years. i pray that this new treo is what is pictured. if so, all my dreams have come true, and palm wil rise again. palm is the original “smart phone” you cant beat tradition, just because there is a new boy on the block. the iphone is just a fad, and it will die out as quick as it started.
just saw it in amazon’s blog
http://amazonbest.blogspot.com/
^The spammers just can’t resist can they?
who cares? palm’s dead since treo. they have absolutely no future.
Upgraded from a Palm III to a Samsung SPH-i300 and now use a Centro, which I absolutely love. Here’s how you beat the iPhone with a new palm:
The Large screen (multi touch + stylus support) and slider keyboard are very good starts!
Add WiFi and a real GPS receiver.
Add a Real Broswer (Xiino and Blazer are ok but don’t cut it) Build in iPhone like imap mail support.
Keep the old Palm Apps working ( Doc, Facebook, Parans, pTunes, TCPMP, GoogleMaps, PalmVNC, pssh, Web, Xiino, Commander, NVBackup, Palm Insider, etc…)
Start using a repo based distro system like debian/ubuntu and stock it chuck full of all the old and new apps, invent a unified pay system ala iTunes-ish for core apps but allow custom repositories…
BAM! That isn’t really to difficult…
I don’t have an iPhone, but do have the latest iPod Touch, which will mostly be for games and such. So sure I’m missing the cell connectivity and camera. But the iPhone is still missing Blue Tooth, the accuracy of a stylus if desired, usb disk abilities, expandable memory, replaceable battery, and a physical keypad (I’m getting used to screen typing, but I don’t think it will ever cut it). Why the heck can’t I copy and past stuff? Sheesh…
Anyway, that’s my take, add WiFi and don’t let Spring disable the GPS functions for christ sake.
Oh, one last thing, Video Output!! Just like the iPods used to do with a standard 4 pole headphone jack. Video input would also be swell. But video out would allow me to get one of those new micro projectors and put on presentations from my phone!! And make the video out simply duplicate whatever is on screen, unlike the iPods Photos and Video only output but no output from other apps. Now that would be one killer phone, the end all…
100 mill for that? No software can compensate for that horrid hardware. Looks like the HELIO/Palm/Blackberry/Windows Mobile cylon
The mock-ups I have see on the web look a bit too HTC for me. I know they are the source (manufacturer), but Palm needs to return to being ‘inventive’ and not follow the leader.
One item they (I hope) consider is to make the charging cord also the syncing cord as iPhone did.
better if you could sync with bluetooth also.
Lets wait and see for a couple of days.
Cheers.
Geo
My Centro can sync over bluetooth, it’s slow but it does it. While it might be nice to have a mini usb port as the sync/charge cable. I also want them to bring back a native serial port via the dock, or perhaps video out so they might still need more pin density than usb can deliver…
Multi-touch is patented by Apple.
The team discussed security and transportation issues with the Secretary of Homeland Security and local police jurisdictions.Authorities say as many as 3 million people could flood the National Mall for the event. Meanwhile, Barack Obama has picked the Bible that will be used to swear him into office. The former Illinois Senator will use the same Holy Book Abraham Lincoln used at his inauguration in 1861. Obama will be………..
I’ve always said that Apple copies – all the stuff that Apple has came from somewhere else – LIKE PALM – Palm had their App Store before Apple – touch screen? The Zire is the predecessor to the iPhone – just redone in Apple ways – so excited to see the new Palm. Pressure’s on Palm!
I’ve just joined this site and it looks great.
I’m a staunch Mac user and love the Apple styling but for a phone, give me Verizon of give me death!
How about… ” or” death!
I agree.–WC
Very beautiful
Very Nice.Thanks
I am eagerly seeing the phone.
