John,
Nailed it! This topic has bothered me for quite some time, and it was topped of recently by the 60 minutes expose (http://tinyurl.com/55f6hj).

Who is to blame? Everyone? Part of it is the disposable mentality of the consumer, but a huge part lies in the manufacturer.

I know I am not alone when I say I am willing to PAY MORE (read that several times Mr. Manufacturer) for items that can either be broken down into individual components for recycling or are genuinely biodegradable.

[...] 100 percent recyclable? So is everything, given enough processing. Plastic comprised of recycled water bottles? Want a cookie? What about the 5 million RAZRs now paving the bottom of countless rivers? Environmental packaging? If you stuff the thing into a bag made of fruit roll-ups, I’ll go along with you. Otherwise, weak sauce. Read More.. [...]

However, if it gets people to atleast think about the environment for a change, thats a start.
