If you’re not familiar with “Survivorman,” shame on you. Survival expert Les Stroud has stranded himself for a week in a ton of godforsaken (but beautiful) places with nothing but a multitool and a bunch of camera gear (unlike that other guy). The result is an extremely good show called “Survivorman.” Les was here at CES to talk up Sony’s equipment, which he’s used exclusively on his shows and which he believes is the best stuff on the market for the kind of dirty, dangerous guerilla filming he has to do.
Les does all his own shooting and is doing a lot of editing as well. We talked about what he needs out of his equipment, what could be improved, and what you can expect to face if you decide you want to film yourself surviving in a rainforest for a week.
Devin interviewed Les courtesy of Sony, and Doug attempted to wrangle the camera’s autofocus, which was having trouble with the low light and neutral color scheme of the Sony green room. Thanks to Les and Sony for taking the time to meet with us!

Great on-the-spot interview, but a real pity you couldn’t sort the focus out.
Maybe Les should have been the one recording the video.
You sweat you die.
I hope you weren’t using a Sony camera to shoot this interview. Maybe next time find some place to shoot besides a dark room or use infrared?
If we got to pick the interview place or the lighting, we definitely would have gone somewhere a little more appropriate. But it was Sony’s call.
By “that other guy” I presume you mean Bear Grylls survival theatre :)

Great interview! Doug I’m glad you got those last two questions in there, I’ve always wondered about that. I remember him saying something on that lost at sea/tropical island episode in season one about a sat phone, but that it didn’t work too well.
Hopefully Les sticks around and keeps doing this for a long time. Love that show.
I recut the video to try to minimize the blurry parts. We had two cameras going — just wanted to get the rough cut up there relatively quickly.
Solid work Devin, Doug. Just finished watching all three seasons.
Survivorman is the best show on TV, I love it very much. I think as humans, we need to spend more time outdoors and in nature, and less time in a cubicle. Just my opinion, but an overall balance between both worlds would be optimal and realistic.
My favorite show on t.v. I just wish he would look more into panasonic, I use an ag-dvc30 and from my perspective it seems like the perfect camera for what Les requires. its solid, rugged and has never let me down.
keep up the great work Les
Survivorman is my favourite TV show also.
Good interview Doug!
@Adrian
I agree with you, humans should spend more time outdoors instead of being cooped up inside.
