Hands-on with Razer’s new wired/wireless mouse, the Mamba

I had a long and interesting chat with Razer’s president about the development of the first wireless mouse the company has put out. Of course, it’s not just wireless, it’s also wired, making it what he termed the first “convertible” mouse. At last, you can use a mouse while it’s charging!

You may remember that Razer was one of the die-hard ball-mouse proponents. They were making ball mice for ages after everyone else had moved to optical, because they felt the technology wasn’t good enough for gaming input. Now most of their mice are optical, but they’re transitioning now to the 3rd (and a half) generation laser sensor. And this whole time they’ve been weighing whether to try wireless; actually, it’d be more accurate to say they’ve been trying it for years and only just recently decided that the device they could put together was good enough. And now they have what they feel is the best mouse in the world, and a first in several categories.

You can see the tour of the Mamba in the video, but it’s worth mentioning here that the grip is very comfortable and they’ve tweaked the shape of the Death Adder to make it more comfortable, as well as repositioning the thumb buttons, adding some extras at the tip, and coating said buttons in the grippy finish, which I love. The base is also the charger, but you can detach the cable (appears to be a modified mini-USB interface) and put it in the mouse, so it’ll charge while you’re using it. There is no performance difference, they say, between wired and wireless; they were only satisfied with the product once the wireless firmware could support the same 1000Hz polling rate as their wired software. And now they say they’ve squashed most of the bugs and we’re going to get a really solid product.

I like Razer’s design philosophy, and I like their mice. I’m really looking forward to putting the Mamba through its paces in a month or two.

Is that video choppy for anyone else?

They also showed off the new “Carcharias” headset, which is the headset that will be coming in the Megalodon package; the package will include a little amp/mixer that they’re still QAing. They were really light and very comfortable, I can see myself wearing them for way longer than the Piranhas, which, though they sounded great, tended to crush my head a bit. I didn’t get to use them for anything, but I’m hoping they sound as good as their cousins.

Anyhow, these are definitely winners from what I can tell, and I’ll have a full review of them as soon as they’re available — should be a couple weeks.

  • I like that mouse. I wonder how ergonomical it is; can it be used long term and still be comfortable?

  • I really like the idea of being able to charge the mouse while using it. I used to have a similar mouse for my laptop, I don’t recall the brand, but you couldn’t use it while it was plugged in, which I thought was completely absurd.

Any idea on the pricing of this new mouse?

  • That mouse is definitely made for ride handers correct?

If it was both hand friendly I would definitely pick one up.

    Damn being left handed!

  • Nice video David! been googling like mad to find a hands on for this Razer Mamba..

hahaha you tried to check out the removable batery but it dint work, you almost broke the mouse!

  • Devin i mean :) spelling error lol

  • hi devin, when you do a full review on the razer mamba, could you confirm whether the mouse has no prediction/correction with its tracking. I saw on a razer video on youtube and the razer guy said it had no prediction which interested me.

could you test if the mamba has perfect tracking, whether it skips, has any negative or positive feedback and whether it’s true that the mouse has no prediction/correction (unlike the deathadder which has prediction).

also in your review could you work out the exact measurement of the lift-off distance for the mouse on various types (hard, cloth, etc) of mousepads. because a mouse with high lift-off distance is bad for low sensitivity gamers that like to lift their mouse off the pad when they swipe.

i am looking forward to this new mouse from razer, i hope the high price is justified, because on paper it is a great mouse. 200ips/50g is a massive statement and could it be? lag free wireless!!!

i look forward to reading your full review on this mouse, i really do hope it lives up to its hype.

  • Microsoft announce the same design type of mouse months ago. Looks like Razer just copied them. The Razer mice are also extremely overpriced. You can preorder the new Microsoft mouse for $65 to $79 shipped.

  • That mouse looks really nice. I like how it can be both wireless or wired, although I would personally use it as a wireless and just charge it at night.

  • Have never owned a razer but I think that’s going to be my first. Devon, when’s that coming out?

  • I’m done with razer products. I bought a 3G diamondback and a year later the scroll wheel in it died.

I’ve used computers over 20 years and I’ve never had a mouse die so quickly.

I went back to Logitech and snagged a G9. It’s a better mouse all around and I feel more comforatble with it’s level of fit and finish.

  • Nice mouse, I got a wee small mouse one time before and it gave me terible pains.. thanks for reviewing this one.

  • Its look very ergonomic.
I hope it would be good for by bro who is a tech potato.

  • Very cool looking mouse! I’ve never seen one like it before.

  • I went ahead and bought one based on the article and comments listed here. Very comfortable. I’m happy.

  • I like the look of the Mamba. Very sleek. I also like that you can recharge the batteries. I use a Microsoft mouse that needs to replace batteries and they always die at the wrong time. My only concern is build quality since one poster complained he had a razor break for him and I heard that from someone else I know.

  • Yeah it does look pretty sleek but I would have to play around with it to really get a feel for it and see if it works for me. In the end it is all about comfort and functionality, so I will have to test it out ASAP.

  • I went cold turkey a few years ago when my old mouse died – it was hard to use the touchpad, but now I’m an expert and will probably never go back to a mouse. But – if I did want a mouse in my life in the future, this seems like a cool one.

  • This looks to good . I’m going to buy it for sure..

  • Its a cool mouse and match up with my latest stylish PC.

  • Ever watch the Simpsons? Ever see the Episode where Ned Flanders opens a store for left handed people? Yep 15% of us are left handed and almost always ignored by the manufacturers of input devices. I have to buy mice that work for both right and left handed people because a left handed version of the “cool” mouse with all the hi tech features is almost… yes almost never available.

  • this is the first mouse I have seen that competes with my Logitech evolution. I have had it for over a year, and up until this one nothing comes close

  • Wired sucks, we can all agree on that. Also, what if the mouse’s battery doesn’t last for a day?

I much prefer the Logitech G7, which comes with 2 batteries. One stays in the mouse, while the other one charges in the wireless receiver. When the mouse battery dies, you just switch it for the one charged in the receiver. Brilliant.

  • How much does this cost and where can I buy this online? I’ve been trying to look for this in my country but unfortunately, I can’t find one…. :(

    • Hey, if you can’t find a place to buy this mouse from try eBay.com. There are many stores, which send products all over the world. I have bought many things that way, which have been hard to find in my country. I just bought Mushkin memory that way recently.

  • This is the first Razer mouse I’ve bought. I didn’t buy one before, because all the previous models were only wired versions and after using wireless mice for years I could never go back.

Anyway, this is by far the best mouse I’ve ever used and it’s pretty much a perfect mouse. And the great thing is, that you can use it while it recharges when you plug in the wire, so if the battery happens to run out you don’t have to worry.

And for those who commented M$ making this mouse already for years. That’s totally ridiculous comment. M$’s mice are nothing like this at all and are far inferior in every possible respect.

This is easily the best mouse ever built. It’s expensive yes, but still, it’s the best.

  • That’s neat how you are able to recharge the mouse, looks like a very comfortable mouse. I like the headset too.

  • I have owned this mouse for a few months now. It’s a great mouse and worth every penny until it stops working and then good luck getting it replaced.

The design is great. It’s well laid out and very comfortable. The wired/wireless was a neat idea but the battery will only last for a few hours before it needs recharged so I gave up and just ran wired all the time. The software for programming the mouse is easy to use.

After owning the mouse for two months it just quit tracking on me. All of the buttons still worked but it would not move the pointer in wired or wireless modes. I’m fairly technical so I went through all the normal troubleshooting steps before contacting Razer. Uninstall, reinstall, updated drivers, firmware, different pc, etc.

I have been working with Razer technical support for five weeks now and I can honestly say it’s been one of the worst customer service experiences in my life. Good luck finding their phone number. It’s nowhere on their site. They prefer to do everything through email. If the live chat feature is being staffed you can get the phone number through that.

The tier one support people were pretty good to work with on the phone but my experience gets horrible beyond that. They admitted there were a lot of isses with the Mamba and since it was such an expensive product it had to have the ok of their tier two support before they would issue an RMA. Since then it’s been nothing but stupid questions and suggestions once a week. They continually ask me something I’ve already answered, suggest something I’ve already told them I’ve done. I called them twice in the last two weeks to express my frustration with their level of service and nothing has changed. I still haven’t received my RMA and I think they are hoping that I will just give up.

I have since read a lot of customer reviews on various sites and am finding many other people having the same support issues. I’m still hoping to get mine replaced but will probably never buy another Razer product after this experience.

  • I’ve always liked my razor.

  • Looks like a nice mouse :)

  • It’s been quite a few months now, is it still going? Often with these things they look and feel great but they aren’t long lasting.

  • Great design! It looks very cool, I like Razer!

  • Sorry Guy’s, I am going to go against what most people are saying on here.

I had the Lachiess for some time until i wore out the middle mouse button, so I decided to buy the mamba … and Yes!! the packaging is sweet, but i find the mouse just too big !! and cannot get a comfortable position in my hand as my thumb palm hangs too much over it, also if you are playing games like COD4 or WAW if the mouse moves off the mouse tablet, you get freezing for just a split second, until it finds where it was which i find really annoying.

The settings are just way too much !! and i spent 4 hours just getting a stable pointer. I am on the latest 1.08 version and find it just too buggy !! Mouse button 4 which i use for melee is just too easy to hit when using the left mouse for shooting, so to me this mouse is a huge dissapointment, and has been replaced with the G9x for now until the drivers and problems with freezing if the mouse moves off the plate are resolved.

Until then it is wrapped up on the sideboard as a paper wieght.

I think it only fair that the downsides are also painted in reviews, although I have only ever had Razer mice until now.

  • To some extent I think you’re right

  • I think that mouse will be perfect for fps and shooting video games like CoD4 and Halo!

  • i typically hate bluetooth mouse’s. i am a web designer and have had problems with the pointer jumping over the screen. i’m thinking the signal was be crossed by a co-worker. however this does look interesting.

  • Looks interesting for play games but….

  • This looks awesome, will give it a try.

  • Hmmm… Definatelly it looks nice and comfortable.
But I’m not sure how accurate can a wireless mouse be?
My two friends once bought razer mouses and guess what? both of them were not working properly… Maybe they have improved since then…

    Cheers

  • I don’t know if it is ergonomically built, but it sure does look really nice! Most wireless mouses work pretty well so my guess is this is an upgrade and probably works a lot better.

  • I have been using this mouse. Really like it a lot. Great article by the way.

  • Yeah, I’m an Australian so I’m quite down to earth. Hmm. Doubt it’s the distributor or postal service as when it arrived at my doorstep, the packaging was insanely bubble wrapped. LOL. Yes. I am experienceing nothing but weird-butted freezing issues. In games. In windows. What ever I do. Press firmly against my razer ExactMat on either side or whatever surface. Nice range but that hasn’t been a issue as far as i know since the Logitech G7 series mice. I just wish someone would be l33t for once no vanity intended.

  • the removable battery looks a bit tricky but I do have to say that I am going to pick one of these bad boys up!
    Kim

  • excellent idea. comfort is problem.

  • This is a great looking mouse and it seems to be ergonomically designed to fit your hand perfectly.

  • I think I will like to try this RAZER mouse…I specially liked the weird looks it has.

  • I really like the idea of being able to charge the mouse while using it. I used to have a similar mouse for my laptop, I don’t recall the brand, but you couldn’t use it while it was plugged in, which I thought was completely absurd.

  • I do like the idea of the removable battery although it looks somewhat uncomfortable!
